Overview

Bugera captures old-school amp musicality in their V55HD amp head, whose modern touches put a wider palette of vintage voicings at your fingertips. With a proud pair of 6L6 power tubes in the output stage, the Bugera V55HD bathes your guitar in clean California sunshine. Let's go trippin'.

Bugera went to great lengths to give this tube amp head the ability to deliver everything those dusty relics of the rock revolution did-minus the collector-sized price tags. But this labor of love was taken one step farther to give you maximum tonal possibilities in true Bugera fashion.

Amps once came in two varieties: those with triode (having three active electrodes) power tubes and those with pentode (containing five active electrodes) power tubes. Triode tubes, which predated the pentodes, provide what many guitarists agree is a "softer" tone. Pentodes produce a slightly more urgent, aggressive sound. The V55HD runs on power pentode tubes, but includes a Mode switch that lets you run the power section as if it had triode tubes-that is, at about 40 percent less power. This gives you the option of going beyond old-school-straight to elderly school.

The old amps that defined electric guitar tone were often single-channel amps. This Bugera V55HD tube amp offers that same vintage clean, but add a second channel for modern high-gain tones. To begin, take your pick of the Bright or Normal inputs, then twist the three-band EQ (Bass, Mid, Treble) and Presence control to sculpt your signature sound. Depending on which channel you choose, three 12AX7 preamp tubes take your tone anywhere from dignified blues to garage-leveling madness.

The Bugera V55HD's power stage's dual 6L6 tubes propel this tone. The head has an impedance switch that toggles between 4, 8 and 16 ohms, making them compatible with virtually any speaker cabinet. These amps also have reverb, but in the interest of tone and durability, their reverb is derived from a studio-caliber digital processor. The spring reverb found in their post-war predecessors sound lovely, but they're delicate and expensive to repair. The V55HD's modern update gives you an equally mesmerizing vintage reverb sound without the wallet-draining vintage reliability. And if all these features weren't enough, you also get a road-tough footswitch that allows you to select channels and activate/kill the reverb remotely.

I'm not an amp expert and I don't play one on TV, but I do know what I like. I've played a lot of amps over the years looking for the right combination of sound, features and looks (yeah, looks are important). Just before I bought the Bugera, I tried out the Egnater Renegade 65W - a fantastic head - but wanted to do a little research first before I dropped too much on it. Coincidentally, a Bugera ad popped up on Harmony Central and I clicked-through. Back to Harmony's web site, I read the glowing reviews and noticed the super price on the Bugera V55HD. Even though I had never played this amp, I bought it on gc's web site. I'm Extremely happy with this head! Playing it with my Strat through a 2x12 cab, it sounds lovely. I play it through the Normal input (bright is like an ice pick in your ear). The Clean channel is just that... lovely and clean with that tube amp depth. The gain channel growls, and the reverb is sweet. I haven't even tried the triode to pentode switch yet, but I can't wait to try it with some old school blues tunes. There are some sweet musical nuances that this amp makes when you crank the clean channel volume and control the output with the Master level. The *free* footswitch seems to be built ruggedly and is an awesome addition to the already low-priced amp. Last, but not least is looks....the amp is just beautiful. Very classy. It weighs a ton (all right... at least 40 pounds I'd guess) so hopefully that's an indication that it's built to last. I've only had it for a couple of weeks so I can't comment on long-term durability, but if worse comes to worse, I could buy three of these for the price of the Egnater. Hopefully, I don't ever need to, but if this amp were stolen, I would definitely buy another one.

I was stuck between this head and the Jet City 20 watt. I demoed this head in-store today and I loved the tone plus it had an extra 35 watts in case I needed it. I brought it home this evening and it started to get extremely hot after 20 minutes of playing. The footswitch then went out. Ever since the distortion channel randomly switches to the clean channel. I will be returning this to get the Jet City head. Buyer Beware. You will fall in love with this head in the store, but IT IS A BEHRINGER product, so that means its probably going to be the most unreliable product you'll buy. If you want a tube head for the budget price, definitely go with the Jet City. Sacrificing power for reliability is completely worth it in my book. I WOULD NOT USE THIS HEAD WITHOUT A BACKUP!

Great Buy!

By dw

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This is a great buy for blues and classic rock players. The clean channel pumps out rich, warm tube tone from several guitars I've tried. This channel really excels, though, when it's hooked to a hollow-body or acoustic. It sounds so good, I no longer need my acoustic amp. The overdrive channel has a vintage tone good for blues or classic rock. (If your a modern metal shredder, you will need a peddle to push the break-up.) You can't go wrong for the price. It's an amazing value.

Too good to be true, but it is!

By Bugera Believer

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

What can I say, I bought this over the Fender BandMaster VM, and I couldn't be happier. The Clean channel is clear with hints of Fenderish tone, only more pristine, and alive. The distortion channel gives you that big Classic Rock sound, but can easily be goosed with an Overdrive or Distortion pedal for a more modern rock/metal tone. Beautiful cosmetics, well built cabinet, and a two button pedal for have the price of the Fender. In fact, you can buy this head and the 412 cabinet for less than you can get the BandMaster VM head. Need I say more?

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I wish I could rate this head a 4.5, but its not in the stars for the GC rating system. Let me start off by saying I have owned sever Bugera Heads in the past 3 years and NEVER, EVER had any problems with any of them. Now for the review. I will make this short and sweet. Clean Channel, one of the best in the biz. Perfect clean to nice break up. Full tube creamy goodness. The price for this head is unreal. Reverb, amazing. Pretty much says it. You can get a nice hall feel, or go crazy and make it sound like you are playing in a tin house with no windows or doors. Very versatile. Channel 2, not my fav. Its ok dont get me wrong, but I think some different tubes may make a difference here. A bit chainsawish for me, but still usable depending on what style you play. I set the EQ at noon and let it go. Takes pedals extremely well too, which is a huge plus. If you are on the fence, buy it. If you are looking for a low price, full tone head with a great clean, buy it. If you are looking for a metal machine, gain pumping monster, buy a mesa.

A very goog all around amp

By Mic

from Yonkers, New York

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've been tring amp heads for the last 2 years looking for something not too expensive, has an effects loop and sound good. I've tried just about everyone out there and this iss where I settled. I don't gig any more, just play for myself and jam a little. This head has all the features. It has a nice wide smooth range of volume, not jumpy or full or nothing like alot of other amps. The clean channel is just that, the lead channel has a lot of possiblities with the use of the gain, volume and master volume. A great feature is the Mode switch in the back to change the power tubes from the standard PENTODE to TRIODE (reduced power and soft tone). I don't like the standby, it doesn't seem to work like normal amps, if you are plugged directly into the effects return you can still get sound, doesn't seem to turn off the power to the tubes. The only other can I have for this great amp head is the cabinet, is its weight, too heavy, the cab is made from MDF, which is very heavy and can break easy, too bad it's not made from plywood. Other than that, she's a keeper, loves pedals and she intergrates and sounds great with my Digitech RP1000. I scored her with a coupon, well worthy the moeny. On last thing, I swapped the 6L6's for a pair of THD yellow jackets with EL84's that run in class A, what a smoker, puts this amp over the top!

Had to buy it!

By Mark

from Stanley, NY

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have built several amps myself, mostly Marshall based, these are fine but they all lack a solid clean tone. I tried this in the store, while really thinking about buying or building a Deluxe Reverb, This took the cake. The only draw back to this amp is the reverb. It sounds fine when in the clean channel, but the minute you switch to the overdrive side the reverb sounds awful! Fortunately I have a fantastic reverb pedal so I don't mind. As for tone, I play this through a 2x12 cabinet with Eminence Wizards, and it is exactly what I was looking for at a steal. I think it sounds even better than the "F" tone I was looking at. Also comes with a foot switch. Try this amp before you buy anything similar, you will be pleasantly surprised. Built like a tank as well. I am impressed. The Pentode/Triode switch adds yet more versatility as well... Try it and see just how versatile this amp is!

Boutique for peanuts!

By Robin Rothwell

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Searched for a "Bassman" style head with modern features ( F/X loop, etc.) for some time. Low-and-behold: The Bugera V55hd! Killer "fenderish" tone and muscle to boot! Tried in store with a 8ohm cab and flipped. Got it home and put it in my 4ohm, 4X12 and STAND BACK! This thing is like a "Super-Reverb" on steroids! Used on my first gig (with it) last week and it sounded incredible on stage. Every guy in my band said, "HOLY....., That thing sounds awesome"! Best rig I've ever had. At just over 300 bucks, this amp comes in as the best bargain in the industry! Bugera has hit one out of the park on this puppy!!! Couple'a guys said, "oh you got a BOOGER amp" 'til I started playing and they shut right up! If you're a Classic-Rock, Blues guy or an "Alt" man. Run at 4ohms. You won't believe it!!!

Bugera V55HD Amp Head

By David

from Nashville, TN

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I jut bought this amp head along with the 2-12 Bugera ext. cabinet last week. So far I am very happy with the amp. I don't think you can beat it for the price but there are a couple of things to note. First, the overdrive channel does not sound that good to me. Second, the bass is not all that full. Next, the amp head is a little heavy. I pulled an old Ibanez parametric eq out of the closet and it made the amp sound so much better. I have played Strats, Les Pauls and Tele's through this amp and the Tele sounded great in the clean channel but the guitars with humbuckers sounded the best.

Nice amp

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Great sounding amp for the money. I have an old fender tremolux amp with fantastic tones. If you dial the midrange back on this head on the clean channel you can get a comparable sound. You get a lot for you money. The only question is durability but that is not truly going to be known for a few years. I bought the 2X12 cabinet with it and total package is well worth the price.

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I got the V55 HD and the 2x12 cab. This thing just amazes me on the sound. If the amp holds up it will be an incredible buy. It is great for Blues and Classic Rock which is what I mostly play. Just because it is Behringer doesn't mean it is bad. I have some Behringer stuff that has outlasted more expensive stuff. All products have bad and good reviews.

GO BUGERA!

By MikeyTheRipper

from Eugene Oregon

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I love Bugera because they aren't a very well known brand like marshall but aside from that here is the skinny on this amp head. I love texas blues and lots of fuzz on my tone and very good classic sounding drive at a good price, and bugera delivered. The reverb is amazing because its not over the top but not to shallow and the gain is perfect when a Fender strat is pushing out those bluey crunch chords we all love. whats really cool is that with the different class of power tubes being switchable you really create a new sound, like from classic rock to very retro 40's style of gain or drive. When i switched the treble pickup to neck i got a fuzz pedal blues out of it withouth to much fuzz. I would suggest getting used to its heating power though but other than i'm very happy with this product

Fantastic!

By Chris

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

So, I was looking at head and the Jet City 20 watt. I played on both for a little over two hours, and at the end of of the day, this one won out. Its fantastic! A little bulky, but it has great tone. I play priase and worship music for several churches and blues and this covers ever sound I need. And with a Fulltone Fulldrive, it shines! I love this head! Also, this amp has gread overdriven tones when you push the tubes. I dont have anything bad to say at all except that its a little bulky, but then again... most amp heads are.

Great Value for the Money

By Will

from Mt. Pleasant NC

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've been playing for about 15 years and have plugged into all kinds of amps. This one came out of no where. It straight up rocks. Your not going to get Metallica tone out of it but if you just want to rock out this is your amp. And for the price its a great deal. The clean channel is just incredible. Very clear with a ton of head room. The overdrive channel is great too. I for one like the triode setting myself. You can get that tube saturation tone with out it being so loud it hurts. The amp is suprisingly quiet as well. I use and Ibanez S470 and when I crank the master all the way there is very little to no hiss at all. That really impressed me. It also reacts well to pedals. When I plug my Vox Saturator infront if it my sound goes from rock and roll to total world domination. Its great. I also run a Line6 POD 2.0 through the return on the effects loop and that works great as well as putting it through the front of the amp. I got this with the Bugera 212 cabnet and I have to tell you the fit and finish was great. No tears or nicks. Everything worked and looked as it should. I would recommend this head to anyone who is looking for great tube tone on a budget. Way to go Bugera.

For the price theres nothing better

By Tony Bernitz

from Ruckersville VA

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I am not going to dwell on the features that this amp has to offer exceptfor the fact that they are way better than the Jet City.Egnator etc that have less power.Other people have written about the amps features and the only thing I can say is that played thru a 1 by 12 cab with a Hellatone vintage 30 which can handle 60 watts this amp is outstanding.Better than the Voxes,Fenders and everything else I have owned in 40 years of playing.I have never had to use this amp in pentode mode as it is loud enough in triode.I have heard bad things about the earlier models reliability but mine was built in June 2010 and apparently the better quality components have worked. This amp can do anything from Country to Rock and is great. The distortion channel is so good that you dont even need a pedal. The only problem I have as a slightly disabled person is the weight 37# which should be nothing for you youngsters when I cosider that my Traynor YCV40 weighs in at 45#

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have been looking for a nice tube head since I first got my new guitar and I bought this almost on impulse. I got it pretty cheapy on ebay and it is still blowing my mind everytime I play it. The clean channel is out of the world! It has a smooth buttery tone even with the volume cranked. The distortion channel was a little dissapointing but it could be that my double coiled pick ups are too powerful. Luckily I have a nice distortion pedal that I use one the clean channel and it sounds amazing. Over all it was a great buy for the money.

Sweet 60s & 70s Vintage Tone

By Grec Pokorski

from PA

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This head has fantastic old style tone. You can't touch this tube tone at twice the price. Works incredible with a 4X12. The amp looks cool -like an old 50s German Grundig shortwave radio. The reverb was a surprise too -sounds wet & springy like an old spring unit(even though it's digital) surf's up! The clean channel is warm smooth & glassy. The gain channel sounds excellent too but has to have the master volume cranked LOUD -a very 70s heavy classic rock sound. At low volumes it has an almost old 60s Mosrite fuzz quality -like the Electric Prunes. The only drawback of the amp is the clean/gain switching -there is too bit much treble in the gain. Would have been nice if there were 2 different tone sections but no big deal. the 'budget' construction reminds me of the old Silvertones - cheaply made but take care of it & will last a lifetime. Absolutely love this amp....

My Gig-Worthy Solution

By Daniel Gamble

from Loveland, CO

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I play in a bar band which plays lots of late '60s music: CCR, Cream, Beatles, etc. I started out using a 45-watt 6L6-based Peavey Prowler combo, but it didn't have enough oomph, then I used a Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb, but it didn't have enough headroom, so I used a '65 RI Fender Twin Reverb, but it was just too much volume and too much weight (we gig a LOT). I found one of these V55HDs on CL and decided to try it out. I am glad I did! I run it in Pentode mode at 4ohms into an open-back 1x12 with a McKenzie speaker out of an old Marshall, and into a closed-back 1x12 with an Emminence-made Reverend AllTone speaker. I love this set-up: plenty of sweet dimensional headroom with just a touch of break-up when I push it. I only use the clean channel and effects including OD, except for when we play "Mississippi Queen", for which I use the drive channel. We average 6 gigs a month, and this head just stays in my trunk. I have not had a single problem with it. My only complaint is how inaccessible the tubes are. You have to remove the chassis to change them, though I haven't had to do that yet. Dangerous Dan

A little "Buzzy" with my rig but, Tone to die for. Now, if Bugera get's all the little engineering quirks worked-out on these amps, you've got a new standard in the industry that will rival all the big names.....in my view. I can only give it a 4 right now but it could become a solid 5.

Comments about Bugera V55HD 55W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This amp sounds awesome. The distortion channel lacks a little, but I run a distortion pedal through the clean channel and it sounds awesome. The clean channel is very clean and sounds just as good as some of the more expensive tube amps. I am very pleased with this purchase!
