A crossover instrument for guitar players looking to expand their skills.

The Breedlove Crossover OF Mandolin is designed as the go-to instrument for guitarists wishing to add depth to their repertoire by learning to play the mandolin. This carved, solid-top mandolin features a wider nut width and a radiused fretboard inspired by the Breedlove Custom Shop for exceptional comfort and playability at an affordable price. This is an excellent instrument for guitar players looking to expand their skills by picking up the mandolin.

Body Shape
The Breedlove O body is an elegant rendition of the traditional teardrop "A" body shape that has typified mandolin style from Celtic to bluegrass.

Woods
The solid, carved Sitka spruce top is complimented by the carved maple back and sides -- a timeless combination that produces exceptional resonance, projection and musicality.

Neck
The semi-gloss finish on this handcrafted neck provides the most comfortable and fastest playing neck possible by preventing hand binding from the sticky texture of a full-gloss finish.

Fretboard and Nut Width
The radiused rosewood fretboard is optimized for comfort and playability, and the 1-3/16" nut width provides wider string spacing for faster, easier chording.

Soundhole
With pronounced volume, the f-hole design articulates tone clearly so that it stands out from other instruments in an ensemble.

Aesthetic Elements
The semi-gloss black finish on this mandolin is contrasted by an ivory binding at the top and back body. The binding provides protection for the instrument and highlights the elegant dimensions of the mandolin.

Set-Up and Quality Assurance in Bend, Oregon USA
Breedlove's comprehensive quality control process provides the player with an instrument that will play great right out of the box. Prior to shipment, every Breedlove instrument undergoes a rigorous multi-point inspection in Bend, Oregon by their expert U.S. quality control team. They start with a visual inspection: they check aesthetic and structural elements of the body and all components for flaws. Next, each guitar is tuned and undergoes a play test, where craftspeople check nut height, relief, action, and string height. Based on the results of the play test, they then adjust for maximum playability. Next, each instrument is buffed and polished by hand with painstaking attention to detail. Once the instrument has passed inspection, a signed QC sticker is placed, and the instrument is carefully packed and shipped.

  • Great value

Pros 1. The wider fretboard makes this a comfortable instrument to play, especially if you have large/wide fingers as I do. 2. The tone is very nice on the lower 3 pairs (a little brittle on the high E strings). I'm not going to say it's as good as the tone of the old Gibsons, but it's a distinct improvement over the tone of the cheaper models I've tried. 3. The tuners seem pretty decent and are holding tune well. 4. The satin finish is, for the most part, very nice, especially on the neck. The finish could have been a bit nicer on the sides where it's not quite as smooth but it's good everywhere else. There are no visible issues but you can feel that it's a bit rougher on the sides when you run your hand over it. 5. The neck is comfortable and allows for fast playing (kudos again to the satin finish). Cons 1. The nut has very sharp corners. I'm going to have to file the corners and round them a bit as I've already cut my hand while playing. I don't know if they all come this way or if mine was an oversight. It's a minor issue that can be resolved in about 30 seconds with a small file. The corners just need a little rounding over. 2. The high E pair sounds slightly brittle. It's a very slight difference from the other strings and not horrible. Many folks probably wouldn't take note of it. Overall, this is a pretty nice mandolin and for $269, it's a steal. If you've tried mandolin before but found the narrow fretboard too difficult to manage, you might want to give this a shot. As I said above, I have big fingers. I'm barely comfortable playing on a guitar with a 1 7/8" nut. I'm comfortable playing on this mandolin.

  • A steal at this price

As reviewed by Marc on 3/31/2015

I am a beginner and went through several mandolins until I found the right fit for me. I tried the rouge 100 due to the price but it felt cheap. I returned it for the Gretsch New Yorker Supreme. I liked the New Yorker a lot but it just would not stay in tune. Next, I tried the Kentucky Artist, I really liked it a lot. The quality was rather good. The sound and sustain was excellent. I planned on it being a keeper. However, it wasn't long before I realized that my sausage fingers were hindering me playing clear chords and notes. I didn't want to give up on the Mandolin and my teacher mentioned the Breedlove Crossover and how the wider nut provides more space between the strings. I exchanged my Kentucky for the Breedlove. It turns out that it was an excellent decision. The Breedlove beats that all. The exceptional quality and craftsmanship is instantly recognizable. The action and overall playability is amazing. I have not had to retune it since set up. I absolutely love this mandolin. I purchased a blemished one to keep a work for when I have time to play and because at this price I want to have a backup while I can afford it. I could not more highly recommend this product.
