Before there were distortion pedals, the only thing that guitarists could do to get that loud "distorted" sound that is heard in early hard rock albums(Black Sabbath, The Who, The Beatles, etc...) was to turn up their amplifiers as loud as they could stand. This was no real "distortion" like we are accustomed to today. It was referred to as high gain or simply "overdrive". The BOSS SD-1 Super Overdrive is the perfect way to get that classic overdrive sound. Yes, there is a big difference between overdrive and distortion. While distortion distorts the sound, blending notes together and "muddying" it, overdrive retains the original guitar signal while adding the high gain that gives solos extra sustain, and rythm parts more "edge" and higher volume. This pedal is the antithesis of the "heavy metal" sound. If you are in a metal-style band, do not buy this pedal! That type of music requires a louder, "muddier" distortion that regular overdrive does not offer. BOSS does offer at least 5 different distortion pedals as well as their multiple overdrives, and in my opinion, they are the best on the market. If you want to sound proffessional, BOSS is the way to go. All other compact pedals pale in comparison. *BOSS is a part of the ROLAND music company, who are most famous for their perfect sounding synthesisers, electric pianos, and digital recording equipment, which in my opinion is the best that money can buy. Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive

By RARic01

from Buffalo, NY

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

For 40 bucks, the Boss SD-1 is the best Overdrive value on the market! The circuit is very similar to that of a vintage Tube Screamer, except for the addition an additional diode in the clipping section. The resulting asymmetrical wave pattern produced a deeper, richer bass response than the Tube Screamer?s symmetrical clipping section. The SD-1?s sound is also less focused in the midrange frequencies than the Tube Screamer. There is a negative to this pedal...with some guitar and amp combinations, when you max out the SD-1?s Drive and Level controls, you can hear some distortion filtering into your clean sound even when the SD-1 is turned off. This phenomenon is inconsistent; i.e., I have heard it at times?other times I have not! To remedy the problem, back off a bit on both the Drive and Level controls or perform a simple circuit modification improves the bypass circuit and eliminates the bleed-through. More on this below! For $20, you can download modification schematics from Indyguitarist.com that allow you to turn this and most of the popular Boss pedals into just about any ?boutique? pedal on the market, for a fraction of the cost of a boutique pedal. Once you have the schematics, the parts needed to complete the mods are just a few dollars and the hour spent with the soldering iron is actually quite enjoyable and satisfying. Inyguitarist also offers a forum where you can post questions and get tips on how to perform the mods. You can buy an SD-1 and turn it into either a Boutique TS-808 clone or an improved customized version for only about $65-$70 total. I added a switch to my SD-1 that allows me to toggle between symmetric and asymmetric clipping and I also switched out a few components to widen both bass and treble response and increase the amount of available overdrive.

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

Once again Boss... you never fail me. This is pedal #6 from boss and I wont go anywhere else. This pedal really gives me some variation from my metal zone pedal, now i can come in with some overdrive to get the rythem going and then blast into some lead riffs. Make sure to put this before your distortion pedal though, i found that out through some trial and error.

Big overdrive for small price

By Fberlinger

from New York

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

When I started to play electric guitar I wanted to get an overdrive pedal for a low price. I knew that Boss made cheap and efficient effects. First of all: You can't go wrong with the Boss design. I would say that those stomp boxes have the most rational design because you definitely won't miss the huge on / off button on stage and they are compact and will fit in any pedal board. Also they are pretty durable and will still be part of your collection after some years. The SD-1 provides a clean distorted sound and will even make open chords sound good. But you can achieve that even with heavy metal distortion and low gain. Also the SD-1 will always leave a low distorted sound in your tone even with the pedal tuned off, which you won't get rid of without a Noise Gate. Overall the SD-1 is a great pedal for rock 'n' roll but if you want fat and heavy overdrive you should go in another direction!

BOSS Super OD

By Aquila

from Undisclosed

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

BOSS has got to be the best brand for guitar effects. These are very high quality effects pedals that will last quite a while. I am not actually a big fan of the overdrive pedals however. I expected a lot more distortion than I got, and although the sound is great for some songs, it's not what I had hoped for. The sounds are very deep with not much clarity or "sparkle" to it, and there is not much distortion even with the knob at max. Also, the actual "overdrive" part (which makes the pickups extremely sensitive sort of like a compression sustainer pedal) is good for some things (again) but OFTEN NOT FOR THE MUSIC I PLAY. Notes ring fairly long and strings are very touchy. So overall it's a good pedal if that is what you're looking for, but if you really just want some distortion, get the plain distortion pedal or go up a little more and get the mega distortion (there's also an OD/Distortion pedal that lets you switch between the two styles). So I hope that helps everyone pick the right pedal. Check out BOSS's website and look at the distortion grid to find one that fits you.

Awesome Overdrive!!!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

I bought this pedal a few weeks ago and its totally awesome. When you turn it on for a lead or solo it provides screaming harmonics and an overdrive that makes every note of your solo crystal clear. To top it off, Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance of A7x used this pedal to record the solos on City of Evil (they switched to the MXR Wylde for the new album). So for someone looking for a killer lead tone, buy this pedal.

Boss is the Best

By Bob

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

This pedal can only be described as awesome. It works amazingly well as a solo boost or simply a classic overdrive. The tone control is acually more a a treble boost which is great for solos. It allows your tone to stand out. You barely even have to strum when you play. Overall its simply great for soloing and I highly reccomend it and its has a great price.

Good overdrive!

By TheRaygun

from Reynoldsburg, OH

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

I've used the SD-1 stock and also modded, and it's a very good pedal. It's based around the TubeScreamer circuit, so this gets you there cheaper. The drive is good, but I found it loses some bass when engaged. This is a common problem to the TS circuit. The SD-1 isn't a bad pedal, I would just suggest the Boss OD-3 as a better alternative.

Great tone!

By marthieu425

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

This pedal has wonderful crunch. you pretty much have to use your distortion on your amp as well but it gives your tone that extra boost. I use it with a boss compression and a DD-3 delay. It suits my needs perfectly.

Overdrive

By the81charge

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

The Boss SD-1 is a really versitile overdrive pedal. The features on this pedal are straight forward so not alot to figure out here. I tandem this pedal with the DS-2 for some great overdriven distortion. And with the Boss name behind this pedal you know it won't quit.

Crystal clear

By David Jenks

from Medford, OR

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

The sound from my new SD-1 is perfect. The "bite" is sharp and clean from the lowest detectable drive level to the top. The controls have a nice range, so it's easy to find the sweet spot I'm looking for every time I change it. I chose this pedal because I wanted a bluesy sound with more versatility than the BD-2 Blues Driver. If you're only interested in playing blues, the BD-2 might be a better choice. It's always best to pop down to GC and try them out side-by-side. For me, the SD-1 is perfect. ...and it was only fifty bucks!

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

Tried this one side by side with the famous ts9, and the boss BD-2. Guess which one came home with me? For me this one just oozed creamy texas blues sounds (ala SRV ZZTop etc) better than either of the other ones. Half the price too!! Versatile too really does ACDC/ black sabbath tones on my Marshall Mg15ms really well. Asymmetrical clipping does a better job at reproducing what an overdriven tube amp gives you than the ts9's symetrical clipping. Single notes and chords sing out, and don't get muddy. I own a mix of Boss and MXR pedals, and I believe this one might be Boss's most under rated pedal

      Boss SD-1

      By act53

      from California

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

The Boss SD-1 is a great pedal and it has pretty good overdrive. You can use it like I do and use it with an overdriven amp. I like the solid construction and flexibility of the pedal's sound. The pedal has a great smooth and crunchy tone. The only thing I don't like about this pedal is when you're on your clean channel you can still hear a very little amount of fuzz eventhough the pedal is off. Overall it is a decent pedal and I would suggest it to anyone.

I guess you could say mine is a vintage one

      By DG

      from California

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

I have one of the original ones from the early 80's that was made in Japan. I must say after comparing it with the new ones, which are made in Taiwan, I like my old one more, not that the new ones are bad. First off, the fact that i've had this for over 20 years now, says something about how long this little yellow box will last, granted the paint chips off here and there, but thats standard wear and tear. But the sound of this thing is great, very similar to a TS-808, uses a similar chip too (JRC 4558 DD versus TS808's JRC 4558 D) and works great as a solo boost. Love it, definetely NOT for anything heavier than blues or classic rock in my opinion unless you pair it with a heavy dist. pedal. BUt if you can find an old one made in Japan, do it, it sounds better

Killer gain out of a little stomp box. Once again, BOSS delivers.

      By Aaron Adkins

      from Syracuse, NY

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

I recently picked this box up because I really dig the amp distortion I get from my Rivera Hundred Duo Twelve but I didn't want to have to use the FX Loop for my Delay pedal in order to preserve that killer hi gain tone. I've got this plugged in followed by my Delay going direct signal and I'm running through the clean channel of my amp now. The sound I get from this pedal is awesome and although not exactly as killer as my amp when it's overdriven, it gets pretty darned close. To the guy who said you can't get a Hi Gain sound from this pedal, I couldn't disagree with you more.

      By CDOG of DVP

      from Bolinas, Ca.

Comments about Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 Pedal:

I used to be strictly a distortion pedal user until I got into listening to Eric Johnson and I fell in love with that smooth violen like tone of an overdrive pedal. The SD-1 has smooth crunch very nice coupled with a tube amp, nice picking dynamics as well.I don't think I can ever go back to distortion type pedals ever again. This pedal goes from sweet blues to outlandish Yngwie Malmstein licks in the turn of a knob or two. Rock solid BOSS contruction as well.A must have in your collection.
