Poor quality reverb

By marshal

from Alexandria VA

Comments about Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb Effects Pedal:

I found this reverb to be of low quality. I don't know if the sample rate is low or what, but it's very "grainy" and not smooth at all. I've used other reverbs such as Trex Room Mate and the Peavey Delta FX rackmount multi-effects processor and they both put this Boss pedal to shame. I have quite a few Boss pedals. Overal my opinion of Boss pedals is that they are mid or low grade. For the price you pay for their pedals you could spend just a little bit more and get much better quality. I'm sure there are some exceptions, I don't want to offend those that have a special place in your heart for one of these Boss pedals, as some of them have their place. But I honestly could not see how anyone would actually enjoy the sound of this reverb. It sound like a bunch of sand floating around in the speaker when i play notes. I've tried every setting on the pedal and adjusted all the knobs and couldn't find anything useable. Go to the local guitar store and try it out. If you like it, get it. But please try a couple others first, like the TC electronics or other brands.

Expensive, packed w/features, and bad tone

By windwalker9649

from Lowell. MA

Comments about Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb Effects Pedal:

So; i got this pedal a couple months ago. I had been using an EH Holier Grail, but needed something that took up less real estate on my pedal board (that particular H.Grail is very large), so i put it on craigslist looking for a trade. Someone contacted me with this one, like an idiot I hadnt played one (besides my DD-2, and CE-2, I was never a fan of Boss pedals, they always came across as toy-like to me)so i went by what i read in reviews. This just cemented the idea of playing something before you buy it. This is a horrible sounding delay. I hate when people describe a pedal as soundng "digital", because nothing can sound digital, what they really mean is cold and sterile. But this pedal sounded digital. Another reviewer nailed it on the head, really cold, with an unacceptable amount of artifacts. The only way I can play this without experiencing the fingers through the chalk board shrillness is to dial the tone knob way back. Actually, the only reason I gave this 3 stars instead of 2 (one star should only be given to things that dont work) is the tone knob, which isnt on most reverb pedals. The spring and plate (I never understood plate settings on guitar pedals, since they are rarely used for recording guitar) are so trebley and shrill, they're all but unusable, especially on single coils. The room and hall are okay, and the modulation seems like one of those "hey check out what this pedal can do, but I'll never use it". All in all, I was MUCH more happy with the Grail's reverb quality, even without the features. Strangely enough, the only way I could get this to sound useable was to run it through the amps input, instead of the effects loop. This shouldnt be the case, it should sound better bypassing the preamp stage, but again; its so shrill that it actually benefits by being colored by the preamp. Everyones tone is subjective, and very personable. So some may find this is exactly what they want. But if you tend to lean toward a more vintage woody sound as opposed to modern type tone, you'll definitely want to try this before buying. I have several old Boss pedals, some very old; a CE-1 from the late 70's for recording, a CE-2 from 1980-81 for gigging, DD-2 from the 80's. None of these ever had an issue with breaking, or having any dependability issues at all, so Im sure this will last forever as well. Which isnt necissarily a good thing in the RV5's case. Maybe if you could put a high-cut filter in it like in the DD-2/3 and 5 delays, it would take some of the coldness out of it, but you shouldnt have to on a $160 pedal, and I think it would probably be difficult on this layout, just like on the later DD-6/7 and 20's

Great reverb,

By Tim

from Oconomowoc WI

Comments about Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb Effects Pedal:

This reverb is good for almost any style of music. The modulate setting sounds really cool, its like a chorus/reverb. But the reason why its a 4 start is because you can't make the reverb last very long. When you throw all the knobs wide open, it doesn't last as long as the RV-3 does, which i like to do. All in all its got the two main reverbs i wanted, (hall and plate) and the modulate is a nice addition. the "gate" reverb is weird, and i don't know how i would use it. If lost or stolen i would probably reach for a different reverb, but this does the trick.

Another MUST HAVE!!

By Todd

from Arizona

Comments about Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb Effects Pedal:

Simple, easy to use and it's built like a tank...it's a BOSS. I can't say enough about this pedal. Great addition to any clean tone especailly if you like large, lush hall sound. Has other options to it but I use it mostly for the hall reverb. Great item and great price. Get the power supply.. this sucks the battery down fast. Get this pedal!

A Bassist's dream pedal

By sylvester" Snap" Andrews

from New Orleans, la.

Comments about Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb Effects Pedal:

I loved the way some of those old studio basslines sounded with gated and hall reverbs. Like The O'Jays For The love Of Money. The Boss Phase-Shifter combined with this RV-5 Digital reverb pedal really sounds just like the record. It is really easy to set up. try it.

Versatile Pedal

By Jacque

from midwest

Comments about Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb Effects Pedal:

This is a fantastic pedal! I wanted something that would fit on my pedal board with the rest of my stompboxes and this is easily the best one out there. I run it through a Fender 57 Tweed Twin Reissue and I can get everything from a 50's surf twang to a huge spacious new age sound. Extremely versatile. If you want to get the best sound possible don't waste money on a cheaper unit. If you know what you're doing you will appreciate what this pedal can do and you'll forget about the cost. Isn't your music worth it? I think so.

Sounds... digital.

By RochesterLoner

from Upstate NY

Comments about Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb Effects Pedal:

As is the case with a lot of Boss pedals, this unit sounds overly digital. It's cold, and there are artifacts. The spring rever sounds particulary bad. The Marshall pedal sounds twice as good.
