have owned this product for almost 5 years and have had a love/hate relationship with this pedal. I remember first getting it to recreate dirty punk/metal sounds like so many other people that have written customer reviews. At the time I purchased this I was very enthralled with it and couldn't get enough of using it in it's appropriate setting. But I suppose you can say, people outgrow certain sounds, yeah? The description on this pedal claims that it doesn't take away from the presence of your sound, but as time passed, I realized how empty the distortion sound. Instead of providing a thick foundation at the bottom, I found myself fulfilling more of a second guitar role. Eventually, I felt like my bass didn't sound like a bass at all. Gradually, I wanted to stop doing extremely dirty sounds and go to just a little bit of drive and a boost in tone. All I wanted was thick, full tone that was just a little on the rough side. I found that very hard to do even with the balance and gain controls. MF and Boss also advertise this pedal to be used as a 2 band EQ, but it didn't really help or boost my sound. I do love the features of this pedal though, for such a cheap price I love all the control I get. But what are all the options if you can't really get a good sound out of it either way? I think you would have to have decent equipment to make this pedal sound great but usually if you can afford that, you would be buying a more expensive overdrive unit. If you already have good equipment, this pedal, like many inexpensive pedals, will have a negative effect on your sound. For people with budget equipment, there are better products out there for just a little bit more that are a much better investment seeing as they enhance your sound a lot more. In fact, I don't know why everybody just doesn't save up for the Tech 21 Sansamp Bass Driver DI. I have more recently moved onto the Tech 21 Sansamp PSA 1.1 which (for $600) gives me not only all the overdrive/distortion sounds I want at programmable presets, but big FAT tone enhancement that the Boss didn't have. And for those who really want to stay on a budget, the ODB3 is good I guess, but remember that you also have to buy the Adapter for this. It not only has a very short battery life, but also is EXTREMELY NOISY without the adapter.

I bought this pedal when I was going through the common teenage "punk/metal" phase and I emulated Cliff Burton, Angelripper, and the rest of the thrash metal musicians, but now that I have, as another reviewer said, outgrown that sound, I have very little use for this pedal. Don't get me wrong, this is built very well, and sounds excellent for laying down a Sodom track or combining it with wah and playing Anesthesia, but that's where it ends. Granted, I didn't have an adaptor, so that could have been an issue, but it shouldn't have been a big one. This pedal will give you a rough and muddy sound that makes you feel like Venom's Cronos, but want to put a slight distortion on that Entwistle line, and you're out of luck. Once again, quote me on this, when I wanted that sound, the pedal was exraordinary, although an adaptor would have helped, but the second I needed that dash of edge that distortion would have provided, I was frustrated, so take my word for it, and only buy this pedal if you're going to be shredding instead of grooving.

This thing rocks my socks!

By Chooch McGooch

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

As said by other reviewers, great pedal if that's the sound you're going for. Sounds awesome with my fender p-bass and ampeg setup, but sounds too 'synth-like' with my gibson ripper. Before buying this product, I reccomend playing it at the store with the same bass you own (hoping it's hanging up on the wall) and the same amp you have at the same settings, because it sounds different with every bass/amp setup. Overall, great sound.

BOSS OD Pedal

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

I just bought this thing a week ago and it sounds awesome! It has so many different sounds from slight distortion to a crunchy growl. Great for metal and heavy rock. But when you get it make sure to get a new 9-volt cause the one it comes is basicaly dead, or an adaptor. Otherwise your set to rock! !,,!

This is the essential pedal for any first-timer

By citizenRkane

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

This was the first pedal I bought about six years ago, and it hasn't let me down once. I've been to 16 states and two countries with it. It is the American Express card of effects pedals; don't leave home without it.

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

If you are a bassist this is a must have I had just gotten mine on May 7, 2007 and I was already in love with it when I opened up the box. Their is so many features on it no matter what your sound is this is for you. If you do buy this product dont forget to buy some new cables and the 9V plug-in because batteries dont last to long.

Metalizer

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

Owned this thing for a little while now and I play it through an Ibby RDGR and a Schecter Damien 4 on an Acoustic B200+B410 w/ an MXR 10band EQ. I must say its got the metal sound you're lookin for. Well built, great range of overdrive... BUT this is NOT the sound that will come through on a recording setup. It just sounds too messy if your going directly into the audio interface, its not that crunch that you might want. Even running it out the amp to the interface it wasn't the sound that I wanted. So if you're looking for that edge for LIVE playing this is the way to go, but for any studio effects you're better off using a plug-in.

what is this?!

By Birmingmore

from RVA

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

I've been looking for something with a distortion feature for an upcoming recording session. I had read some reviews here and decided to check it out in the store. I'm thankful that I did. I spent 45 minutes with two basses (active and passive) trying to find what previous reviews were talking about. I couldn't get any real body from it; there only seemed to be a low end and a high end. The distortion sounded cheezy. I would only use this if Boss was threatening me at gunpoint.

Great Pedal

By Blake

from Escondido, California

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

I bought this pedal about a year ago and its amazing. This gives my Jazz Bass so many tonal options. I like to have just a growl for my tone, but some people like to have heavy and crucnhy distortion and this pedal is great for both and anything in between. Boss is always delivers with its pedals and this one goes beyond the average pedal. All in all, this is an amazing pedal.

FUZZY

By Johnny

from Chicago, Illinois

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

Ok...this is the first pedal i have ever bought and is the best one i have ever played...it sounds awesome and it even comes with a little manual with pre-set dials on how to make it sound cool. Also, it comes with blank little fill-ins so you won't forget how you adjusted the knobs yourself. If you're thinking of how it sounds, the best way i can describe it is the bassline from Tool's Forty-Six and 2

Nice Pedal

By James

from Nashville, IN

Comments about Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal:

I love this pedal it creates many different sounds for your needs as a player. It helps me for playing metal or even punk i like to mix it with my crybaby bass wah pedal and my db-50 bass modeling processor. and it hasn't let me down yet. The only set back is you NEED a power supply for it uses up the 9 volts too quickly. so other than that it's the best pedal for the price.
