I bought this a few years back when I was fairly inexperienced in terms of effects for guitar. I had for years just used my amp's reverb, chorus, and distortion. So, I bought this thinking I'd save some money over buying many effects pedals and I'd have a lot of options. The quality is decent. Like other reviews, there are quite a few types of distortion, but none have that ummph, if you know what I mean. The mod effects are pretty good no complaints there. The wah is difficult because it doubles as volume control. So, if you set the height of the petal to the desired volume, but then need to go into wah, the volume goes up and when you step the wah on, the volume stays high. You can work around this by setting the master volume lower and the pedal volume all the way up, but then you don't have volume swells. Lastly, you can save up to 30 custom effects-combos in the banks. Trouble is that when switching between them there is a second delay. Not cool live when trying to go from clean to distortion on the downbeat and it sounds like you missed it. I actually don't use the banks live for this reason. I typically use the banks for recording, but that leads to problems because I have to rewrite the effects for songs when I do them live. So, if you're not really sure what sound you want and need some place to start, this is a great petal. It has taught me what I like and dislike so in the future I can buy specific petals to define my sound.

I purchased the ME-50 because I became interested in effects to fill out my sound--I play on an OG 5150 through vintage 30's. Through friends & reviews I thought that I would find the ME-50 perfect for my needs--I didn't. The delay features are great and easier to use than the DD-6. Most of the Distortions are OK but I don't use them because I'm satisfied w/my amp's tone. The modulation effects (flange, phaser, etc.) are OK as well--a little digital. My main problem with the unit is the expression pedal features. I mainly wanted to use Wah and the Volume feature for swells and lighter distorted parts. However, the expression pedal doesn't have a clean gradual sweeping range--it seems to be either all on or all off. Pretty lame for Wah, reduces volume pedal to on/off switch. If you are a 1st or 2nd year player this is probably a great unit to learn what these effects can do. For the discriminating player, however, you will need to just save up and get the individual pedals that you need to sound how you want.

SIMPLE EXCELLENCE!

By JP

from Virginia Beach, VA

I bought this pedal about a month ago and i have used it faithfully EVERY time i have played since! You can dial in just about any distortion tone that u want, and the effects are GREAT! i love the fact that i can tap the tempo for the delay. the compressor is nice and the noise suppressor works just the way its supposed to when your amp is hissing it shuts it right up. Also when i use the -1 octave it makes my guitar sound like a bass! the harmonist also works good once u set it right for the song you are playing.i also like that if you plug in this pedal and plug in your guitar with head phones you can hear yourself with NO AMPLIFIER!...wonderful for self practice. The volume pedal is very nice to have and it works great for swells. My ONLY complaint is that the wah pedal doesnt sound all that great so of course i stick with my Cry Baby...but overall AWESOME pedal, if you can find it BUY IT!!!

Versatile and worthwhile, but lacking

By Haze

from San Diego

I bought this pedal relatively new in my guitar journey mainly thinking I would save money on multiple fx pedals. While the effects are in no way horrible, and the options are very nice, it does not provide that jaw dropping effect you might be looking for. My main use however that has made it worthwhile is its tone modify and volume control. My other pedals all go through a noise canceler with the me-50, and my overdrive, following. The tone modify is amazing, and really steps up my playing, while the easy volume control allows me to easily adjust my volume for softer songs or a nice manual "fade-out" effect. The distortion and overdrive are not the best, yet it does give a nice gritty effect on some songs, so when I am not looking for a clean and clear, high gain, metal effect, they work relatively well. The fx are, as I said, are "in no way horrible", they are lacking. By lacking, I mean in power and clarity, so I usually stick to a pedal or my amp header fx, yet the chorus option is nice, as is the flanger. The delay is just that, the delay. For the music I play, I hardly need it, nor do I see much of a difference with different pedals. So it works fine as far as what delay should do, and there are a variety of options to play with. All in all, a worthwhile buy, if not for the tone modify effect alone. I have tried to emulate the effect with many others, but they just do not sound right. 3 stars, mainly for a little bit of difficulty with the programmability options, and the wah effect that is embedded WITH the sound pedal... However, a +1 star for the tone modify.

Nice Effects, easy setup

By Mr. Johnathan Nance

from Greenville SC

Good price for a great machine, easy to use and alot simpler than my previous effects board. I like the tone modify controls and the several different distortion types. I especially like the delay function because you can tap in the tempo while you;re using it. Great features and I would recommend for any guitarist that loves to perform solos.

Sheer Brilliance

By Marc Messier

from Fall River, MA

I purchased the Boss ME-50 several months ago, and it is worth every penny. There are many tone adjustments and effects from over 15 types of distortion, 12 types of modulation, and adjustable delay, to reverb, sustain, volume, wah, and octave up/down. This pedal is amazing. Although it took some time to really get the hang of it, the end results were worth it. The main features that sold me on this pedal were the harmonist effect and the built it channels and banks. The harmonist allows for one guitar to play both parts of a guitar harmony as can be heard in songs like detroit rock city and many songs by iron maiden. When switching channels in memory mode there is a slight pause in playing, but like anything else, one can become talented in timing the right time to switch with practice. The built in tuner is another wonderful feature, and the dual outputs is also an added bonus. The phone/line is probably my most favorite of the features at present because it allows for me to practice without an amp and wherever I want without having to worry about getting noise complaints. I would not recomend buying the channel changing footswitch; it is too much to pay for a button that simply changes channels. I usually just do it with my toe; I will not wear shoes while I'm on stage. Incredible pedal. Every guitar player should get one ASAP!!!

Amazing affordable pedal

By Crazyplayer72

from Illinois

This is an amazing pedal. Great delay, great wah, amazing distortion. Plenty of effects. Usually you get a pedal with a bunch of stuff you never use. I use most things on this pedal I must say. The only bad thing is the tuner, but thats my taste. I just dont like tuners built-in to the pedal. I dont know im weird. But otherwise its an amazing price for an amazing pedal.

Boss at its Best

By Wayne M

from woods of central Virginia

Words can't describe how happy the Boss ME-50 makes me feel! I have been playing guitar for over 25 years through alot of different gear, and this processor has everything a guitarist could ask for! The chorus is top notch, the delay is unstoppable, and the distortion is to die for! I will use this machine untill it dies! Thanks Boss

Best choice for all-around players...

By Sahid Mejia

from Tijuana, Mexico

I bought this pedal two months ago, and I'm more than satisfied. It has distortion for any style that you want to play, going from a simple overdrive, to that heavy distortion. The effects are really good, it has almost every effect pedal in the Boss line. And the controls for each one of these is just awesome. Delay is also very good, and you can also change the delay tempo by pressing the delay button down for two seconds, then tap with your feet two times to best fit the tempo of the song you're playing (very useful for soloing guitarists) Tone modifying is just incredible. it makes your guitar sound as if it had diferent pickups, raise your low or high ends AND make it sound like an acoustic guitar (This last one is very nice feature) Compressor/sustain is also nice and love it cause it's not that noisy... Noise supressor is another nice feature, altough you might not need if you're not using a cheap guitar. It has 4 diferent reverb types and they are (like any other effect on this pedal) very nice. Finally the expression effects are the sweetest things you get out of this pedal, the wah effect is very clean and sound just like a Crybaby. it also includes a whammy effect, (like that of a Digitech Whammy) for either one octave up or down (or between) of your normal playing The only thing you migh want to consider is having a good guitar, because a cheap one can pick up a lot of noise (especially when you're using a distortion effect) Overall for recording and for live use, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Good for Beginners

By Joey

from Georgia/Virginia

I bought this when I was learning about effects and trying to find my sound... which I beleive is good for the beginner who maybe doesnt have alot of money to spend on experimenting with different pedals to find their own sound. The distortion modeler helps find distortion sounds you like, and the variety of modulation and delays available helps you experiment and learn how to use different sounds live. I dont use it much any more, because I bought the right pedals to replace it, but I still use it in the studio sometimes. It's very durable (far as I've seen), and if you're looking for just a basic yet versatile pedal for less money, this is the one for you.

It's okay...

By Guitar MAn

from Auburn, CA

I got this thing when I started up in my band and I gotta say this thing is impossible to control live. It kinda sucks how u cant use two effects at once, like switching from flanger to chorus in a song. I have to bend over while the songs going to change the effect. This thing is great for just rockin out n guitar and pretty good for recording. I wouldnt recomend this for a pro musician.
