Overview

Katana—the traditional sword carried by the historic samurai of Japan—is a symbol of honor, precision, and artistry in Japanese culture. Adopting the majestic sword’s name with pride, the Katana series presents guitar amplifiers with smooth, cutting tones honed by generations of dedication and expertise. Born of the development process behind the acclaimed Waza amplifier, these innovative amps embody BOSS’s determined pursuit of the ultimate rock sound. Featuring proprietary circuit designs and meticulous tuning, the Katana series combines traditional craftsmanship and breakthrough functions to produce true next-generation rock amplifiers.

With 50 watts of power and a custom 12-in. speaker, the Katana KTN-50 delivers a commanding range of gig-worthy tones that gracefully slice through any band scenario. The amp also excels for home playing, with a uniquely efficient design and innovative Power Control that provides inspiring sound and response at low volumes. In addition, the Katana KTN-50 includes integrated access to 55 BOSS effects, which are customizable using the free BOSS Tone Studio editor software. Up to 15 different effects can be configured in the amp at one time, enabling you to bring fully prepared tones to the stage in one amp.

A Refined Amp with Inspiring Tone
Designed for guitarists who are serious about their sound, the Katana KTN-50 offers exceptional tone and touch response for stage playing, recording, and simply practicing at home. The custom 12-inch speaker is driven by a special method developed for the flagship Waza amp that optimizes the speaker and cabinet character. This gives you authoritative punch and cutting presence previously attainable only with high-end amp designs. In combination with the five selectable amp characters, the Katana KTN-50 produces class-defying power and expressiveness to meet any playing situation.

Five Original Amp Characters, Honed for Rock Playing
Sharpened to perfection by the BOSS engineering team, the Katana KTN-50’s five amp characters offer everything from organic vintage tones to modern high-gain sounds. Clean is natural and transparent, while Crunch offers satisfying grit and response. Lead has a wide gain range to suit many styles, from fat, stinging blues solos to fluid legato shredding. With DNA inherited from the Waza amp, Brown delivers refined high-gain tone sought after by the world’s greatest rock players. The Acoustic character further enhances the Katana’s versatility, providing optimized tone that makes acoustic-electric guitars sound stunningly natural.

Leave Your Pedalboard at Home
With its built-in BOSS effects and recallable Tone Settings, the Katana KTN-50 lets you perform anywhere with just a guitar and amp. Connecting to BOSS Tone Studio via USB provides access to 55 effects that are fully customizable for your needs. Going beyond standard distortion, delay, and reverb, the selection also includes powerful tone-shapers like pitch shifting, ring mod, slicer, and more. You can load 15 different effects in the amp at one time and use up to three simultaneously. Two tone Settings let you store custom amp and effects setups for instant recall, and you can always jump to the current panel settings at the touch of a button. It’s also possible to connect optional footswitches and expression pedals for hands-free control on the gig.

Grab-and-Go Operation
While the Katana KTN-50 includes many advanced features, it’s amazingly simple to operate. Dedicated knobs for multiple gain stages and three-band EQ allow you to quickly dial in your tone by ear, just as you would with a standard tube amp. Essential effects parameters are adjusted with a simple knob twist, and memories can be stored with a brief button hold. The Power Control is great for throttling back the volume for small stages and home playing, and also includes a Standby setting that mutes the sound for switching guitars or taking breaks. And by flipping out the integrated tilt stand, you can easily angle the amp back for better sound projection.

BOSS Tone Central
At the BOSS Tone Central website, you’ll find numerous free amp and effects setups for the Katana series. Created by pro guitarists, these setups provide ready-to-play sounds for various music styles, and also make great starting points for building your own sounds. They load into the memories in a Katana amp via the BOSS Tone Studio editor software, which is also available at the site. In addition to Katana effects selection and customization, BOSS Tone Studio gives you a convenient way to organize all your Katana setups for different gigs, recordings, and practice sessions.

The Katana 50 is a lightweight, straightforward amp that can be used out of the box with no manual and no computer connection. It comes already loaded with more than most amps, and you can save 2 presets while still using the controls on the panel without messing up what you might have saved. Since this is not a modeling amp, it doesn't come with 99 presets, of which 1 is useful (if that). This amp can give you clean, bell like chiming or low tuned head pounding tones with the flick of a switch or the step of a pedal (FS-5L sold separately for about $30). The 50/25/0.5 watt settings are there not to do some hokey simulation, but to allow you to get cranked volume tones while keeping mom from throwing things at you or your neighbors from calling the cops. There is even a standby mode, which on the 50 is kind of a waste (IMHO). If you're in a small band and the other guitarist has a Blues Junior, you'll be fine keeping up. I'd recommend the 100 watt versions if you've got to compete with more. The Acoustic setting is not a simulator, it's actually for connecting your acoustic, so if you've been called to play your Taylor in the back yard at a friend's house or a coffee house, you're all set. For you soloists, you don't have to stuff your vocals and full guitar into the same PA. You can use this to differentiate in the monitors or mains. Can't say enough about the price, but come on BOSS/ROLAND, give this thing a dedicated line out or don't bypass the speaker by plugging into the REC/HEADPHONES out. That's what the Standby setting is for. That's the only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5. I'm actually a strong 4.5.

Playing through the speaker sounds good. The default effects are ok. I like the power control select being able to set it on low power when playing through it at home. But where it starts to lose points is with the BOSS Tone software editor v1.0.2. Only able set one volume level which is used across each AMP Type. The problem with that is when you switch AMP type from lead or brown setting to clean - the volume for clean is too low and the other way around clean to lead or brown it's too loud. You have to manually adjust the volume and or master volume and or boost and gain knobs. You can surgically try to go into the booster effect and dial it down - but then clean gets lower and the crunch/lead/or brown will have less of a bite.

The sound through the headphones or record-out for DI - has a bit of a drop off sound quality wise vs the speaker. They should add some AMP simulation effect as an option for record-out & headphone.

I prefer to use my external pedal effects - that works out better and sounds better and save time. And I just dial-in basic settings manually on the Katana amplifier panel. If you are not switching through the different AMP types too much - and you won't be switching back and forth between the effect channels and amp types much - then just use it like a regular amp without effect channels.

A great amp for me

By Robert

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I have been using Vox VT20+ for the past three years. I really didn't need the complications of all the different amp models and effects, so I searched for something simpler. After trying several amps (a Marshall MG30CFX, Line 6 Spyder V), I decided to order the Katana 50 and give it a try. I had to wait for several weeks because the amps were not ready to ship from the factory when I ordered it. Upon receiving and trying the amp out, the amp sounded great to me since it had the range, amplitude, effects, and metal distortion I was looking for. I can get the metal distortion out of it I couldn't get with the Marshall, and it has a wide range of lesser qualities of distortion if that's what is desired. Moreover, the amp sounded way better than the Line 6. There are enough effects to more than meet my needs. I had to update the firmware from the Boss website, but it was a very simple process.

There are two things I had on the Vox that do not come with the Katana - the built-in tuner and 5 channels. The the Katana is a two channel amp while the Vox had 5 channels. The tuner is no big deal since I have both hardware and software tuners I can use, and two channels meet my needs.

I have not pushed the amp past the 2.5 watt setting yet since that setting is more than enough for me to use in my apartment so I don't get my neighbors angry at me. And if I ever want to crank it up to 50 watts in another setting, I always have that option.

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I've owned a variety of SS, 2 tube and 1 hybred. This is good as SS get's these days. Side by side with my Little Giant it compares well. Add in all the extra capacities, FX, power select, and ease of configuring it is by far the best I've owned. I had a Mustang head but it was a pain with the menu's. Katana is not specific amp modeling, you just dial in what you like. To my ear the tube amp is a wee bit warmer but it is too close to call. I was looking to get the Roland Blues Cube but a Roland rep. suggested I check out the Katana. It has aux input which the RBC was missing, about the same power and $400 cheaper. It is, by far, my favorite amp this lifetime.

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I've been wanting this amp since watching the advertisements. The GC in Mobile, AL had only one in stock and they held it for me. When I got it home I was a little disappointed at first. The tones were great but the amp was noisy when trying to ramp up the gain. I updated the amp and used the software and now the amp blows me away. The tones I get are just stellar for a 200 dollar amp. If you want to get the amps full potential you must absolutely use the software. The amp seems to take pedals well also.

The biggest shortfall are the effects. They sound great as you would expect. The issue is they are paired up and can only be used one at a time. As an example the OD/Distortion and Modulation share the same knob. Only one of these can be used at at time. Also there is no dedicated footswitch with this model. It would have been outstanding to have the ability to switch channels and turn effects on and off. For the price you can't go wrong though.

I received mine on the first run via another store. I have had it for 2 months now. Built solid .Surely will last. Works very well as an acoustic amp.Modestly. Change out the speaker and prepare for your mind to be blown. It sounds good with the stock 4 ohm katana. Which is similar to a 70/80 IMHO... But wow. It gets so close to tubes with the speaker swap. I liked it before for practice. Now it's just awesome. Period.. You can't go wrong. I am going to checkout the head. If it performs like the 50 combo I am picking it up just to have around for backup and fun.

Playing this KTN 50 for 2 weeks at least a couple hours a day. Haven't even used the tone studio sw yet and I have been knocked back on my heels. The pre programmed effects are AWESOME. Set up and save you panel settings in the channels and push the button and you are in business. Love this amp. I traded a Fender Champion 100 and do not regret it at all. Boss has hit the tone bone in my head and i get ezactly what I feel, not think, my sound should be. GC and Boss have hooked me up. I haven't even used any of my Boss pedals yet. The clean channel is crystal clear and all of the amp vioces and completely adjustable to find the sound you are looking for. The pre programmed effects are great and very usable as they are whit a bit of attention when tweaking. Can't say enough or give details for all the possible combinations so save me the trouble and just get one and see for yourself.

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I've had my Katana 50 for about 45 days now and it is most definitely a keeper. The amp voicings sound great and are easy to dial in. The amp plays well and is quite dynamic, better than any digital combo I've played in the past. It's easy to find a tone I like and then it's easy to forget the amp and just play. And, of course, it's simple and lightweight and portable.

The USB connection (Mac OS X for me) works well. I am able to use the Tone Editor and record my performances with Logic. The only downside is that the USB audio streaming from the computer only arrives at the Katana headphone jack and does not play through the Katana speaker. This is by design and is probably meant to prevent full spectrum audio from being played through the guitar speaker and being judged as sounding bad. Understandable, but I would prefer to be able to stream audio back to the internal speaker so I could use my MacBook as an advanced looper for the Katana without adding headphones or another powered speaker. Fortunately I have a Marshall Stanmore speaker that I connect to the Katana headphone jack for this purpose and it sounds brilliant.

All in all the Katana 50 is awesome and an incredible value. The folks at Roland / Boss really seem to know what musicians want and it shines through in their product line. Katana kicks *** and I'm glad I have one.

        FANTASTIC For the Price

        By Dave

        from Waukesha, WI

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

Generally, I'm not a fan of modeling amps. I prefer tube amps with Tubescreamers for boosting. That said, my DSL100 is not an amp I can use in the apartment. I have seen some great reviews on the Katana 50, and for the price, thought I'd give it a whirl.

First off, this is a great platform for pedals. I generally like non-BOSS effects like Fulltone OCD, and Tubescreamer clones and they sound great through this thing.

These amps come stock with simple, very usable amp voicings, AND has 3 BOSS pedal overdrives built in; Blues Driver, Overdrive (SD-1), and Distortion (DS-1), so there are really a lot more sound options than it seems. The other modulation effects are BOSS quality, and a nice plus to this amp. There is software to download even more of the BOSS stompbox effects, so if you want Metal Zone sound, you can do that too. The chorus sounds like the Chorus Ensemble I use to have, the phaser and flanger are kinda neat too. The reverbs are quite natural sounding as well.

I mainly got this for its .5 watt setting, but the 25 and 50 watt settings make this a great grab-and-go amp for last-minute smaller gigs. 2 programmable channels is really all I need, but if you need more, the Katana 100 has 4 channels available. I HIGHLY recommend this as a home practice amp, small venues amp, or an amp for us old-school guys who like some features an a great sounding amp, but don't need an amp that tries to sound like 45 different tube amps. It's also less toy-like than the Roland cubes. I'll always prefer tube amps for recording, but this is a really good alternative in live situations when tube amps aren't practical. This is the lightest amp I've ever owned.

Caveat first - I'm a 68 y/o noob, with less than a years playing experience. I owned a VOX Modeling amp that confused the stink out of me! No such prob with this amp. Intuitive, love the different wattages, different voices, effects, and I don't confuse easily. Started off playing acoustic, so having an acoustic setting means I don't need to drag the "Loudbox Mini" along when I go out on the deck to practice. Wish it had been available earlier!

        A Box of Brown Sound

        By Schnitzel

        from Akron Ohio

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

The preamp is where I know this Kat excels. But the overall sound is somehow excellent, surpassing my expectations at this price point. I bought a raw speaker for more than this well featured combo. I haven't downloaded any fx.
It's amazing a box this size/weight produces high levels of bass with definition. Smooth, balanced response ATW up and down the neck, harmonics etc.
Easy to dial in and preset, wide volume range [also easily dialed down ''tone intact'']. A wide variety of distortion, dynamics, attack, sustain, in response to guitar volume control and attack dynamics.
I walked in 1 time, guitar strapped on, amp handle in right hand, later I heard "great sounding amp" a few times, makes this a definite keeper.
Are these types of selectable preamps/fx in a powerful, great sounding combo what you are looking for ? Probably...I found the distortions in particular to be outstandingly dynamic, cleans too.

The BOSS Katana KTN-50 is a very good guitar amplifier. It features excellent reverb effects and a good clean sound. I bought the KTN-50 for practicing and recording work. It fits the bill perfectly, is easy to carry around and looks nice too. Purchase any BOSS Katana series and kiss the heavy, overpriced tube amps goodbye forever!

Comments about Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

The BOSS Katana KTN-50 is a very good guitar amplifier. It features excellent reverb effects and a good clean sound. I bought this size for practicing and recording work. It fits the bill perfectly, is easy to carry around and looks nice. Buy any BOSS Katana series and kiss the heavy, overpriced tube amps goodbye forever!

A really good sounding amp. Very versatile and able to create just about any sound you like. I use it as a practice amp, but I think it could be used for small venue gigs.

This little power house completely surpassed most of my expectations. Just a few tiny quirks I can live with that have to do with sound artifacts when switching between channels... other than that - awesome in the studio and for practice.
