The Boss FZ-5 is a modern pedal built for the modern guitarist, but the sounds you can get from the FZ-5 are pure retro. Looking back at the glorious rock sounds of the '60s and '70s, the FZ-5 recreates it's vintage fuzz through BOSS state-of-the-art COSM technology. Recall the fuzz-filled flavors of classic pedals, such as the Maestro FZ-1A, Fuzz Face and Octavia pedals, and kick 'em into overdrive with the FZ-5's Boost knob. BOSS' proprietary COSM technology allows guitar players to recreate classic fuzz BOOST control for more aggressive tone. The FZ-5 is the perfect weapon for players wanting to beef up their rigs with classic retro fuzz artillery.

Now, word has it that there are many great fuzz pedals out there, Fuzzwar and the Hoof, to mention some, but the the boss pedal offers some variety in the tone, by having three modes. the FuzzFace mode is deep and played alone it brings out great sounding fuzz, fuzzy enough for me, and it get close the sound of jimi hendrix. The Maestro Fuzz mode is alos good alone, and is much brighter, but still with good amounts of fuzz. If you are really into getting some octaves on there, the boss octave pedal has more to offer. It has great sustain, and it can really increase the volume. It looses some of its fuzz when played with other effects. But it is a great fuzz pedal. It has that cosm technology too. Like the Leslie cosm pedal. I generally like boss pedals, cause of the design of the stomp it self. I can smack two pedal down at once. I think that most other people who do not hold Boss pedals in as high regards as me might find better, and also more expensive Fuzz pedals out there.
I got this at my local guitar store and it is great. It can get you tones from Jimi Hendrix to Black Sabbath to Cream to Led Zeppelin. It is a great pedal so if you want a fuzz pedal, get off your computer, go to a guitar store and buy one!
Well as far as this pedal is concerned i'm not too impressed. Ive been able to get a few tones out of it which i like, but for the most part i feel there are better fuzz pedals out there. This is a COSM pedal and to me it sounds like it just puts fuzz over your tone rather than integrating it into it. Well thats my thoughts...
I was excited when I discovered that Boss was making a fuzz pedal. Getting those vintage 60's distortions can be tricky and older fuzz boxes have limitations. I rushed out to buy this one and took it home for a test drive on my les paul. My first impression was a little dissapointing. It seemed that the effects were a little anemic and lacked the punch of the sounds I was used to. I tried running the signal through my compressor first and that helped A LOT. I recommend doing this, (Boss makes a good compressor pedal). The effect came to life and had the edge I was looking for. The best setting is the fuzz face setting. The other two can be useful but seem a little bit tinny. Overall a worthy fuzz pedal.
This is a decent fuzz pedal. It does a fairly good job (not 100%) of recreating some old fuzz tones. the fuzz face setting is very usable, and in my opinion sounds the best of the three. its no original fuzz face, but it is a decent pedal. the octiva sounds fairly good, but does sound a little off. maestro setting is horrible, but maybe thats just my taste. its very tinny. it does break up nicely, but all in all i didnt find it usable. all in all its a good fuzz tone for 120 dollars. i can see myself using the other settings more in a recording environment, but i will probably just stick to the fuzz face setting for live use. one good thing, its reasonably small, and doesnt require a battery like most boutique fuzz pedals.
