For what it is, the ds-1 is a decent distortion pedal. I just recently bought one and I'm running it through an Vox AC15 Custom. Because of the chimey tone of the amp, I keep the settings on the pedal to Tone at or below 12 o'clock; Distortion at 3 or 1 o'clock and level wherever it matches my volume. If you are an beginner-intermediate level guitar player, this is probably a good choice if all you want is something that will take you away from your clean channel and into distortion. But honestly if you own a solid state amp, don't buy this. Because chances are that you're buying it to get a better sounding distortion than what your amp already offers, and this won't give it to you. If you own a tube amp like me, it's decent to add some edge to the natural distortion you can get from overdriving your tubes, but not really all that noticeable (unless you want more distortion while playing at a quiet volume). All this said, I'm returning mine soon because it's really nothing special but for the price, it is a good deal.

Not my Cup 'O Tea, But for Others...

By Rushtallica

from Tulsa, OK

About Me Experienced

Pros

  • May be good with some setups
  • Some great artists have used these pedals

Cons

  • Does not sound good through any amp I've tried

Best Uses

  • Decorative paperweight
  • Fashionable doorstop

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

I have an old made in Japan version I obtained for very cheap from a local pawn years ago. I can understand the pedal being good for some some people's uses and setups, and I'm glad it works out so well for many others, including top artists, and thus I would recommend it to others to at least try and see if it works out with their gear and for their needs. But I highly prefer actual amp gain. Very few distortion pedals I've tried sound good IMO; at least this is much better than the Metal Zone I tried through a few amps. I was pleasantly surprised when I tried an OCD previously but had no need for it due to being content with the setup I had. There are some others that have come out since that I'd like to try out of curiosity, as well, and I may still try to experiment with the DS-1 at some point. That said, I also have a Boss SD-1 overdrive pedal, and it works awesomely as a boost for my old JMP.

Tone snobs hate this pedal...

By Dude123

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

.... but it's been on the pedalboards of more famous professionals than any other distortion pedal. Like anything else, you need to use it as it was meant to be used - as a boost into an already overdriven amp.

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

Its the DS-1, one of the most well known and widely used distortion pedals in the world, what can I say that hasn't been said about it already? If you want a good distortion pedal just go buy one of theses already. Easily modifiable as well.

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

This pedal is great. Has a character that differs from the other distortion/OD pedals I have. It adds compression when you crank the distortion up. It's better suited for the music that I play than the Metal Zone pedal that I own.

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

Picked up one of these for dirt cheap locally. Owned it less than 24 hours and its back on the market. I was simply looking for a simple pedal to throw in front of my amp to get a higher gain/tighter distortion sound and this just didn't cut it. This is basically a garbage sounding fizzly overdrive. I honestly could not recommend this pedal to anyone.

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

Finally picked this up - Had a Metal Zone MT-2, BluesDriver and Saturator. None really fit my needs. This has a thick, heavy old-school grunge. Doesn't sound tinny or canned like the MT-2. It also doesn't have unnecessary frills like other pedals. Great pedal - awesome for the money.

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

Tested this out in store with my telecaster and was not impressed. It's decent for a cheap price, but if you also have to buy an extra instrument cable and wall plug it will be about $100 and not worth it. But you never know, you should always test them for yourself. Ended up with a Dunlop.

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

Sounds fantastic as a crunchy overdrive, or all out rock distortion/lead pedal. This pedal is every bit as good, if not better, than pedals that I have spent well over $200 for. I've been playing for over 20 years, and I wish I hadn't turned my nose up at this pedal for so long, just because it is low in price. Thank goodness I am not a pedal snob anymore. Price is not what makes a great pedal. Don't be a pedal snob. Buy this pedal!
