For what it is, the ds-1 is a decent distortion pedal. I just recently bought one and I'm running it through an Vox AC15 Custom. Because of the chimey tone of the amp, I keep the settings on the pedal to Tone at or below 12 o'clock; Distortion at 3 or 1 o'clock and level wherever it matches my volume. If you are an beginner-intermediate level guitar player, this is probably a good choice if all you want is something that will take you away from your clean channel and into distortion. But honestly if you own a solid state amp, don't buy this. Because chances are that you're buying it to get a better sounding distortion than what your amp already offers, and this won't give it to you. If you own a tube amp like me, it's decent to add some edge to the natural distortion you can get from overdriving your tubes, but not really all that noticeable (unless you want more distortion while playing at a quiet volume). All this said, I'm returning mine soon because it's really nothing special but for the price, it is a good deal.

Great distortion pedal for the price!

By MichaelB

from Pilot Point, TX

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

I have owned this pedal for about five months now, and I really like it. It's great for when I'm in my room, just messing around. But when turned up to full band practice volume, it gives some very bad feedback. But I've found turning the Tone knob to about 9 - 12 o'clock really helps. It's not the greatest distortion pedal in the world, but everyone has to start somewhere. Not everybody has the money to buy 90+ dollar pedals. So it's a great pedal for the price, but if you have a little more money, I'd invest in the DS2. The DS1 is a great pedal for low volume playing, but at high volume, it can get really annoying with the feedback. Even through all of this, you will get the bang for your buck!

Decent Pedal

By rock4jc

from Raleigh,NC

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

This pedal is pretty much the staple of every guitarist. Almost every guitarist owns one of these pedals sometime in their career. In my opinion, this pedal is not that great by itself. If you use it into a solid state amp it will usually sound very shrill and tinny. Use it in a tube amp however, and this thing will scream. I've found that I like this pedal a lot better if I use it for a lead boost rather than my main distortion/overdrive. This pedal has a ton of treble so it works great for a high end boost to cut thru the mix in a live situation. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, this is a Boss pedal, so it is pretty much indestructable.

First and best!

By Ryan

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

This was the first pedal I ever bought and I have used it every time I play. I haven't had any problems with it and I have had it roughly two years. Its very sturdy and has an amazing sound. I recommend this pedal for beginners and even top performers, this pedal can go all the way.

Can you argue with a classic?

By Klisk

from NJ

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

The DS-1 is often considered the swiss army knife of distortion. Well, you can't argue with that. It's been on more pro recordings than we could ever count, and it's simply one of Boss' masterpieces in that sense. It's a classic tone. Something all guitarists should at least try. This pedal, matched with a Fender Twin is THE 'In Utero' sound. The gain gets right up there. It's marshall tone. The level lets you mix and blend right into your amp, and while I personally recommend the tone at 11 o'clock, you have a whole realm of bass and tone frequencies to choose from. It's the best introduction to distortion. The price makes this something you can't help but invest in. Try it out, I promise you'll love it!

Awesome Pedal!

By Trevor

from Lancaster

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

This is really a great pedal for hard rock, grunge, and punk. This pedal works 10 times better if you have a humbucker. If you don't, I probably would not recommend this pedal if you want to play heavier music. Otherwise, this is a great pedal and is definitely worth the money and you should get it.

DS-1 Distortion

By J Simmons

from elkridge, MD

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

I use my DS-1 with both of my guitars, an Epiphone SG Special (ebony) and my Ibanez Joe Satriani Series w/floyd-rose liscensed trem. My settings (in order) are: TONE: just past the half point, LEVEL, before the half mark, and max DISTORTION. This runs into a Brand X 25 watt amp (at my house). It sounds great for both rhythm and lead parts cause I play both. The tone is good but not when it gets to high. Distortion is better in my opinion. A great buy for the price.

BUY IT-ITS AMAZING!

By Bobby G.

from Moncure, NC

Comments about Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal:

This was my first pedal and it is amazing! I went to a music store and compared a few, and this was the best. It sounded even better when I got home. The only bad thing is when you turn the dials all the way up, you get some fuzz. This is a great pedal for rock, metal, blues, and much more.
