This is one amazing little device. I found as soon as I got it that it had all of the features that I needed to be my own band, and whats more, all those features were easy to use. The almost limitless number of effects were all genuine, whether they be for a guitar, turning my electric into a bass, or turning my electric into an acoustic. I was also pleased with the built in mikes and the overall quality of this recorder. The loop effects were terrific, as well as the drum machine, which had many different kits I could use to create thousands of possibilities. In review, the possibilities are endless when recording with this product.

This unit has great features, but good luck in finding a CompactFlash card that will work in it. Now that the CF card that came with the machine is full, I cannot find one that will work in the machine, even after following the specs provided by BOSS. Stay away from this thing and find a unit that has an internal HD or other form of compact storage. The thing is completely useless to me now.

better than expected loops

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

price was fair, unit is nice and compact, AC adapter not included but the AA batteries are. Still navigating through the manual, but once I get the hang of it, I'm sure I'll be fine. Almost three hundred drum loops built in that actually sound good, basically you're buying a multitrack digital recorder and getting a drum machine as a bonus. Had a Fostex, this one is way better.

Traded Fostex for this little gem!!

By SingeeeengLoreeeee

from Harrisonburg, MD

I originally had purchased the Fostex MR-8HD, which was 50 dollars more and far lesser in quality. The actual recording wasn't very good to begin with, the effects were god awful, and the mastering screwed up my hours of hard work on my tracks. Having owned a Boss BR-532 (an obsolete version using a Smart Media card), I knew I had to go back to Boss for the newer version, the BR-600. It is indeed quite amazing for 350 bucks. Truly great. No, it didn't come with an AC adapter. No, it doesn't have a MIDI out. No, it doesn't even have an XLR input (it comes with a converter for your mic!) No, you can't record more than two tracks at once. No, it's not made for high end studio work. If that's what you're looking for, you'll need something else. BUT! It's got just about everything else including but not excluding a built in drum machine with halfway decent samples, amp and mic simulators. I can even play the bass lines on my guitar with their modulator amps. It's crazy fantastic. You can't go wrong here, people. BR-600 is a very lightweight, compact unit, great for travel. Comes with its own soft carrying case. The Fostex weighed about 8 pounds and did half as much, although its main selling point was the hard drive, I presume. Interface is a little tight at first, but work with it, and it's perfect. Everything you want for the price. Everything you'll need before you expand. Great product.

Portable studio extrodinair!!!

By Starcom21

from Taylorville Illinois

I already own a BR 1600 CD and have done an exstensive amount of recording for myself and several bands from Austin Tx. to Central Illinois. I was shopping for a more poratble unit with the same high quality level as the BR 1600. The BR 600 not only has the same recording capabilities but has been simplified in function and file storage to make it easier to share tracks via internet with other musicians, and mix down instantly. Has the same great COSM effects for guitar, bass and vocals. Precisely the reason I look at Roland products first.

Amazingly compact yet full-featured digital studio

By Junby

from San Jose, CA

I have owned this unit for about a month now and the more I use it the more I appreciate the value in this little beast. There is a full slew of built in guitar effects, drum machine, lots of tracks to work with (though you can only record 2 at a time), built-in microphones, USB connection so data can easily be backed up to a computer, etc. This is my first time delving into the world of digital recording and despite my inexperience I was able to figure out how to record several tracks, bounce them and master them without too much effort. Downside is that it does not come with a power supply (so budget on getting a Roland PSA-120 or invest in a lot of AA batteries) and the memory card that comes with it is small (budget on getting a 1 GB memory card separately). Also, I wish it had built-in support for exporting to WAV or MP3 (like its little brother the MICRO BR) but there is a downloadable BR WAVE Converter utility on their website that can do the job (though they do not mention the existence of this utility anywhere in the manual that I could see). Also the manual can be somewhat difficult to navigate at times. Overall though, it is a great value. The downsides I listed above are really more nitpicks than anything else. If you are looking to get started in the world of digital recording I do not think you can go wrong with the BR-600.

Too complicated

By Ed

from Chattanooga Tennessee

I am very disappointed how difficult it has been to learn to use the multi-track recording features of this system. I have had since Christmas and very little progress. The store clerks know nothing about this device and have no suggestions. Very dissapointed. My wife spent hard earned money. I am sure support at some level would have saved me.

More Costly Than It Looks

By Ballard

from Indiana

When field recording, you need to consider two things: power and memory. That is why the Boss BR-600 is suited well for field recording (although you'll want to upgrade from the included 128MB flash memory card to a high card). However, Boss delivers their products with the bare minimum accessories. When purchasing this product, you'll want to purchase the following components: Boss PSA power adapter, 1/8" to 1/4" adapter (if you don't own stereo headphones that already have a 1/4" jack), RCA cables (neccessary for connecting your BR-600 to stereo equipment), a second XLR to 1/4" adapter cable (it comes included with one-it has no XLR inputs for microphones), USB cable for downloading tracks to your computer, monitoring stereo (RCA input), 1/4" to 1/8" adapter (for line-in devices such as keyboards). Also, the BR-600 has no phantom power, so you'll need a mixer to power your microphones. I suggest condenser mics if you opt to use microphones over the built-in stereo mic. If you record with a computer by your side, it is recommended that you download the WAV importer software. Music is recorded in Boss proprietray format. To export it in WAV, the BR-600 uses your compact flash memory to dump converted proprietary before you upload to your PC. If your card is full, you can't export your recording. The software solves this problem (use the backup function instead and use the software to get all the tracks downloaded to your PC. This could be very useful if your want to do hybrid recording, mixing and mastering with a DAW. I was also surprised to find the instruction manual bigger than the unit and rather redundant. For the price, Boss delivers an exceptional deal, but be aware that out of the box the unit is all but useless without the required components. The effects and drum patterns are amazing and simple to use.

Perfect Sketchbook

By Xcile

from Wrentham, MA

I was looking for something to throw ideas down at a moments notice without having to boot up my desktop and mess around with a DAW, so something portable and quick to get up and running. I looked at the Tascam's and the Fostex machines -- and this one. What sold me was the BOSS name (been a fan since the eighties) and the inclusion of a drum machine -- and not just any drum machine, but a Boss! Very pleased with the purchase. Having used BOSS drum machines before I kinda know the drill for maneuvering through their arcane menus -- with this device you MUST be prepared to learn a new way of doing things. It's not hard. It's just different. The sound is great, the effects are are real bonus. Other bonusus - download a little app to make writing your own drum tracks a lot easier than using the step programming and learn how to download your own drum samples to the on-board drum machine (which is fantastic). Two gripes 1. MIDI would have been nice to output drumtracks and keyboard tracks. 2. The BR600 only accepts memory cards up to 1 GB -- and only older, slower ones at that. You will have to shop around to get a compatible memory card. Don't get one from Amazon they are horribly overpriced (I guess they know there's a market for them).

Great product!

By DJ Crossover

from North Carolina

I've never used a multitrack recorder before but have seen people use them and know the theory behind them & this has been a great experience for a beginner like me. I've only had this baby for less than a week and it's been great. I'm a Hip Hop DJ and am very happy with the results/sound of my mixes. The sounds and effect are great and the book really helps in using it plus I got tips from www.rolandus.com.

Fantastic!

By Brian

from Connecticut

I love this recorder. It's absolutely fantastic. Great quality, great value. The manual's a little dry, and vague on some topics, but I was still up and running in no time. Now, I'm only using it for basic guitar/bass type music (no midi or anything, so I can't comment there), but if you're looking for a great sounding recorder this is it. As others have mentioned, the power adapter is not included, and purchasing a 1gb card is recommended.

Little Investment for Big Quality

By DANIEL URDANIVIA

from San Diego, CA

The reviews posted here helped me decide to get one. I had a great experience with this machine for over 2 years now and even when I'm about to upgrade to a higher BR, I'll keep my BR-600 because of its small size and portability. Just a couple of tips: Get the right Memory Cards (speed & capacity), never overload it (save enough room for mixing and mastering), use digital alkaline bateries when needed, make sure you have a computer with CD burning capabilities and most important, backup your tracks regularly. Enjoy it and have fun.

Fantastic portable recorder!

By Macman

from Austin, TX

This is really a great product. I purchased mine from GC about two months ago and have loved it from Day 1. Please read the manual is my only advice. I am still realizing features on this unit. Be prepared to do some learning with this unit. The COSM guitar effects are really good. I tend to use these the most. I do not even bother hooking other pedals up in front of the Boss BR600. I have posted my recordings using this and people are amazed at the tone and clarity of the guitar tones. The Mic effects are also very nice and it is a breeze to record some good vocals quickly. The built in drum machine is a big bonus. I have not used that aspect much yet but I intend to. The USB connectivity is great it is so quick and easy to transfer WAV/AIFF files back and forth to the computer. I load up a backingtrack to the BR600 and can record guitars and vocals all in the same night, so easy. Thank you Boss for the BR600.

What a bargain, worth every penny!!!

By Robet

from Sacramento CA

I recently purchased this AWESOME recorder and just can't say enough good things about it. The fact that you get sooo many different guitar tones from the airiest clean thru to the meanest metal and virtually everything in between is just phenomenal. You also get the built in drum machine which a super bonus, built in chromatic tuner, literally everthing you need to make your own demo recording. This is the first piece of recording equipment that I have ever owned, and with a little time it is very easy to use. I highly recomend this to any aspiring musician, it's well worth the money. A GREAT DEAL!!!

Very happy with my first Digital Recorder

By Thomas Wilkins

from Newark, NJ

I picked this recorder up on Black Friday and have bee using with it ever since! I finally laid separate tracks for a song I recorded on my RC-2 Loop Station (purchased earlier last year) and havenۡt looked back. Ideas, songs, anything you want to put down, this unit can accommodate it! I totally agree with one of the previous comments regarding the 1GB memory card. I thought the 128MB would last me a while but Iۡve been moving at a faster rate than expected! I now have friends laying tracks and making songs sooner than expected so Iۡve been backing up like crazy! Also, I highly recommend the PSA-120 adapter. Thisۡll take care of the rapid use of the batteries that come with this device. The manual is well written as far as Iۡm concerned so It didnۡt take me long to get under way and I havenۡt even used EVERY FEATURE YET! The compact size is great for travel and the drum patterns are awesome. I had to get a USB cable for the unit but with the price I paid for one, it was no problem. I have to say, I definitely got a lotta BANG for my buck!

BR600 Feedback

By Paul N.

from Modesto, California

I was originally shopping for just a simple drum machine that would allow me to create some loops for working out at the gym. I stumbled across the BR600 and I am very satisfied with the unit. I've never used one of these little gizmos up until two days ago. I spent some time reading through the manual and experimenting with the unit. I bounced my first tracks tonight and ran a few masters. Wow!! This machine is hot! There is enough features packed in this thing to keep you entertained for a long time. There are two items of concern that you may want to consider before purchasing the BR600. First, the compact flash is limited to only 1GB; most stores only sell 2GB and higher now. Next, don't get too excited about the drum machine feature. It only has 9 drum kits and is a little challenging to work on. I ended up connecting a yamaha keyboard and ran the drum kits from it. If you are looking for a fully featured drum machine, I would recommend checking out the Dr. Rhythm 880. If you are looking for one heck of digital recorder with some excellent effects, then the BR600 is for you.

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By telemaster05

from Orefield PA

The Boss BR-600 could be the most worthwhile piece of guitar equipment I've ever bought. I love it half to death. The step by step manual makes it easy to understand, as long as you have some free time and alot of patience. THe recording quality is excelent, and the separate channel volume controles make it easy to mix song and recieve the perfect balance in sound. Another feature I love about the Boss BR-600 is its on-board effects selecton. There are 99 effects that can be achieved, including several Acoustic and Bass. The tube amp setting is especially unique, considering it is the first digital device I have ever used that provides that perfect muddy tube sound. When played through my Line 6 amp, I can achieve anything from a twangy funk to that classic feedbacked Hendrix sound.

annoying

By jeff

unit is extremely difficult to program especially the drums. if you play metal or death metal the effects clip early as far as recording high gain guitar stuff. i went back to my br-8 because it sounded way better and is way more easier to program. if you are looking for plug and play convienence then dont buy this. it takes a while to learn and when u have an idea and want to record it, you end up forgetting the idea by the time you get it set up and find the drumbeat you like.

AWESOME BAND RECORDING

By Jon Barker

from New Hampshire

My three man band and I were looking for a high quality cost effective way to record our music. Luckily our drummers father (maybe some of you know the legend "Curly")had picked up this nifty gadget a few weeks before. I myself was scared of the quality from what they had told me about it. I WAS AMAZED. We set this puppy up in the corner of our 9x9 band room and hit record. the sound quality was amazing. First off, very easy to get going once you figure it all out. We recorded all instruments at once and the quality that was produced was amazing. i recommend this to anyone.

By Daran

Ive had the br600 for awhile and would recommend it to anyone, you can get a great sound from it, especially guitar effects. It is unbelievably easy to use. I have recently upgraded to a computer with home recording equipment, but plan to keep this just for all the guitar effects! You can record a song and in minutes have it mastered and uploaded online!
