This is one amazing little device. I found as soon as I got it that it had all of the features that I needed to be my own band, and whats more, all those features were easy to use. The almost limitless number of effects were all genuine, whether they be for a guitar, turning my electric into a bass, or turning my electric into an acoustic. I was also pleased with the built in mikes and the overall quality of this recorder. The loop effects were terrific, as well as the drum machine, which had many different kits I could use to create thousands of possibilities. In review, the possibilities are endless when recording with this product.

This unit has great features, but good luck in finding a CompactFlash card that will work in it. Now that the CF card that came with the machine is full, I cannot find one that will work in the machine, even after following the specs provided by BOSS. Stay away from this thing and find a unit that has an internal HD or other form of compact storage. The thing is completely useless to me now.

better than expected loops

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

price was fair, unit is nice and compact, AC adapter not included but the AA batteries are. Still navigating through the manual, but once I get the hang of it, I'm sure I'll be fine. Almost three hundred drum loops built in that actually sound good, basically you're buying a multitrack digital recorder and getting a drum machine as a bonus. Had a Fostex, this one is way better.

Traded Fostex for this little gem!!

By SingeeeengLoreeeee

from Harrisonburg, MD

I originally had purchased the Fostex MR-8HD, which was 50 dollars more and far lesser in quality. The actual recording wasn't very good to begin with, the effects were god awful, and the mastering screwed up my hours of hard work on my tracks. Having owned a Boss BR-532 (an obsolete version using a Smart Media card), I knew I had to go back to Boss for the newer version, the BR-600. It is indeed quite amazing for 350 bucks. Truly great. No, it didn't come with an AC adapter. No, it doesn't have a MIDI out. No, it doesn't even have an XLR input (it comes with a converter for your mic!) No, you can't record more than two tracks at once. No, it's not made for high end studio work. If that's what you're looking for, you'll need something else. BUT! It's got just about everything else including but not excluding a built in drum machine with halfway decent samples, amp and mic simulators. I can even play the bass lines on my guitar with their modulator amps. It's crazy fantastic. You can't go wrong here, people. BR-600 is a very lightweight, compact unit, great for travel. Comes with its own soft carrying case. The Fostex weighed about 8 pounds and did half as much, although its main selling point was the hard drive, I presume. Interface is a little tight at first, but work with it, and it's perfect. Everything you want for the price. Everything you'll need before you expand. Great product.

Portable studio extrodinair!!!

By Starcom21

from Taylorville Illinois

I already own a BR 1600 CD and have done an exstensive amount of recording for myself and several bands from Austin Tx. to Central Illinois. I was shopping for a more poratble unit with the same high quality level as the BR 1600. The BR 600 not only has the same recording capabilities but has been simplified in function and file storage to make it easier to share tracks via internet with other musicians, and mix down instantly. Has the same great COSM effects for guitar, bass and vocals. Precisely the reason I look at Roland products first.

Amazingly compact yet full-featured digital studio

By Junby

from San Jose, CA

I have owned this unit for about a month now and the more I use it the more I appreciate the value in this little beast. There is a full slew of built in guitar effects, drum machine, lots of tracks to work with (though you can only record 2 at a time), built-in microphones, USB connection so data can easily be backed up to a computer, etc. This is my first time delving into the world of digital recording and despite my inexperience I was able to figure out how to record several tracks, bounce them and master them without too much effort. Downside is that it does not come with a power supply (so budget on getting a Roland PSA-120 or invest in a lot of AA batteries) and the memory card that comes with it is small (budget on getting a 1 GB memory card separately). Also, I wish it had built-in support for exporting to WAV or MP3 (like its little brother the MICRO BR) but there is a downloadable BR WAVE Converter utility on their website that can do the job (though they do not mention the existence of this utility anywhere in the manual that I could see). Also the manual can be somewhat difficult to navigate at times. Overall though, it is a great value. The downsides I listed above are really more nitpicks than anything else. If you are looking to get started in the world of digital recording I do not think you can go wrong with the BR-600.

Too complicated

By Ed

from Chattanooga Tennessee

I am very disappointed how difficult it has been to learn to use the multi-track recording features of this system. I have had since Christmas and very little progress. The store clerks know nothing about this device and have no suggestions. Very dissapointed. My wife spent hard earned money. I am sure support at some level would have saved me.

More Costly Than It Looks

By Ballard

from Indiana

When field recording, you need to consider two things: power and memory. That is why the Boss BR-600 is suited well for field recording (although you'll want to upgrade from the included 128MB flash memory card to a high card). However, Boss delivers their products with the bare minimum accessories. When purchasing this product, you'll want to purchase the following components: Boss PSA power adapter, 1/8" to 1/4" adapter (if you don't own stereo headphones that already have a 1/4" jack), RCA cables (neccessary for connecting your BR-600 to stereo equipment), a second XLR to 1/4" adapter cable (it comes included with one-it has no XLR inputs for microphones), USB cable for downloading tracks to your computer, monitoring stereo (RCA input), 1/4" to 1/8" adapter (for line-in devices such as keyboards). Also, the BR-600 has no phantom power, so you'll need a mixer to power your microphones. I suggest condenser mics if you opt to use microphones over the built-in stereo mic. If you record with a computer by your side, it is recommended that you download the WAV importer software. Music is recorded in Boss proprietray format. To export it in WAV, the BR-600 uses your compact flash memory to dump converted proprietary before you upload to your PC. If your card is full, you can't export your recording. The software solves this problem (use the backup function instead and use the software to get all the tracks downloaded to your PC. This could be very useful if your want to do hybrid recording, mixing and mastering with a DAW. I was also surprised to find the instruction manual bigger than the unit and rather redundant. For the price, Boss delivers an exceptional deal, but be aware that out of the box the unit is all but useless without the required components. The effects and drum patterns are amazing and simple to use.

Perfect Sketchbook

By Xcile

from Wrentham, MA

I was looking for something to throw ideas down at a moments notice without having to boot up my desktop and mess around with a DAW, so something portable and quick to get up and running. I looked at the Tascam's and the Fostex machines -- and this one. What sold me was the BOSS name (been a fan since the eighties) and the inclusion of a drum machine -- and not just any drum machine, but a Boss! Very pleased with the purchase. Having used BOSS drum machines before I kinda know the drill for maneuvering through their arcane menus -- with this device you MUST be prepared to learn a new way of doing things. It's not hard. It's just different. The sound is great, the effects are are real bonus. Other bonusus - download a little app to make writing your own drum tracks a lot easier than using the step programming and learn how to download your own drum samples to the on-board drum machine (which is fantastic). Two gripes 1. MIDI would have been nice to output drumtracks and keyboard tracks. 2. The BR600 only accepts memory cards up to 1 GB -- and only older, slower ones at that. You will have to shop around to get a compatible memory card. Don't get one from Amazon they are horribly overpriced (I guess they know there's a market for them).

Great product!

By DJ Crossover

from North Carolina

I've never used a multitrack recorder before but have seen people use them and know the theory behind them & this has been a great experience for a beginner like me. I've only had this baby for less than a week and it's been great. I'm a Hip Hop DJ and am very happy with the results/sound of my mixes. The sounds and effect are great and the book really helps in using it plus I got tips from www.rolandus.com.
