I have used many flangers over the years and the Boss BF-3 Flanger is in the top of the class. Whether you want a touch of coloring or oceans of swirl, this pedal will do it all. The BF-3 features a pink metal casing, the same easy click-less switching and red led check light that all boss pedals are known for. It has four main adjustment knobs, of which, the mode knob has the most variety of options. "Standard" mode covers all the basic amounts of flange for most applications. For those who like their flange extra thick, there is "Ultra" mode which gives more of an edge than the standard provides. "Gate/Pan" mode gives a slicer effect that is like a tremolo with a light swirl, and "Momentary" gives you the option of keeping the pedal active only when the pedal is depressed, in a non-latching fashion, for those quick touches. As with most flangers the rate knob controls the speed of the swirl, and the depth knob adjusts the amount of thickness in the effect in contrast to the instrument itself. The last knob is a 2 stage control. The inner knob controls the resonance, and the outter knob controls manual. These 2 work together to adjust which range is affected by the flanging. At complete polar opposites, at one end it will give a lower swirl, and when reversed, it gives a a higher metallic flange. If you depress the pedal and hold it for a minimum of 2 seconds you can set the tempo so your effect speed is in sync with your music. When this is accesed you simply set it by tapping a few beats on the pedal in time with your song and it syncs up instantly. The BF-3 also has duel outputs so it can be operated in mono or stereo for maximum effect. The only feature missing on this pedal is a volume control knob, but with the thickness control you can pretty much compensate for its abscence. Overall the Boss BF-3 Flanger is everything most of the great flangers are and then some. It allows for complete control over any type of flanging effect you could ever desire. With a descent price and pro features the BF-3 proves to be yet another classic from Boss.

Despite having a dedicated bass output, I found that my MIA Fender J sounded better through the guitar output, but even then I thought my BF-2 sounded better than this. All the features from the BF-2 are back, but some of the new tweeks don't sound good on bass. If you can find a used BF-2 I'd suggest that one over this.Different story for guitars, but that's been said enough.

      Comments about Boss BF-3 Flanger:

People say you can get a sound out of a flanger like a jet engine. Well, I'm not that experienced with using a flanger, but I was looking for that swooshing type sound Robin Trower had on his Bridge of Sighs album. This flanger seems to give me the sound I was looking for.

        Comments about Boss BF-3 Flanger:

Well, it's a BOSS Pedal, so you know you're getting great sound from a pedal that would survive being thrown out of an airplane.

As a Bass player, the BF-3 kind of picks up where the BF-2 left off. Follow it with a CHORUS pedal for some really great sounds.

I find the ULTRA setting to be a bit too much - maybe better on Guitar soloing - but it makes the bass sound some 1960's ray-gun sound effect.

The GATE function, on mono mode, is basically a tremolo. Still a lot of fun to play with.

Overall, a great buy. A lot of fun to mess around with yourself or in a session.

          Comments about Boss BF-3 Flanger:

First off, I will say that I am a bassist and bought this pedal mainly because I wanted to get that Justin Chancellor of Tool tone, and this pedal encompasses that tone nearly perfectly (think "46&2" and thats a great example of this thing at work). It has two inputs, one for bass and one for guitar, and it sounds great with both though I mainly use it with bass. The tone is so finely adjustable with 4 different knobs that at first it can seem overwhelming, but after messing around with it for about 20 minutes you'll be able to figure out exactly what you're doing. This pedal can do everything from a clean chorus sound to that wavy, high-rate trippy sound. In all I really don't know how else to describe this pedal, if you're looking at it you probably know what a flanger pedal sounds like and if not, well look up the song I mentioned and thats a perfect example. Oh and for the record, like all BOSS pedals, it's built like a tank- you can jump up and down on the switch and it won't break. Couldn't be happier with my purchase!

          • Spicing Up A Solo

          Comments about Boss BF-3 Flanger:

Rather than repeat other reviews... This is a terrific upgrade to the BF-2 due to the extra mode settings. Especially noteworthy is the Momentary setting which can add some nice seasoning to a solo passage. I don't use a lot of flange effects due to the metallic sound that the more extreme settings can produce but you can clean that up by going easy on the Effect Level knob. Tonally, the BF-3 is somewhat dark when compared to the Rocktron Hypnotic Flange but, overall, the BF-3 is a typically top-notch Boss pedal.

          My second favorite pedal

          Comments about Boss BF-3 Flanger:

I?m pretty experimental in my attempt to pull sounds I love from every piece of equipment I buy. And this one to date has been at the top of my list. Another review called it fat and meaty. I?d agree. It?s also got a subtle almost not there edge of the ear aspect to it that I love.

            Comments about Boss BF-3 Flanger:

This is a great flanger. It's a very typical Boss product. Like most boss pedals this thing has a bunch of knobs to play with. I have used this pedal in all sound modes except touch tempo and I really enjoy creating new sounds with this device. For a noise rock musician this thing can self ossiclate like mad. You can make some of the most ridiculous sounds with this pedal. You can go from a deep sweeping flanger to a crazy vibrato really easily. The ultra and normal mode don't have too much of a difference Mostly I use the ultra. I've also gotten the crimson and clover sound with this pedal. Tone wise I feel that this pedal is a little dark, I don't think it would be as toneful as an electro harmonix pedal. However, this pedal stays true to boss' form. Durable, Collectible, and versatile. The only reason why I didn't give it a five is that it is somewhat of a noisemaker at times and also a little expensive. However, I would definitely buy this pedal again with no hesitation.

              Comments about Boss BF-3 Flanger:

Absolutely love this pedal. I owned a BF-2 for a long time, then it eventually broke. I thought about finding another one, looked at some other flangers, then tried the BF-3. Great sounds, love the ability to run stereo, the Tap tempo is Great. Modulation is alright, starts LOW to HI. The Ultra mode isn't as useful, But you have great control of the sound. The legendary BOSS toughness and durability out of a pedal, a great follow up to the BF-3

All You'd Need in a Flanger

              Comments about Boss BF-3 Flanger:

I can't say anything bad about this pedal. I don't use a ton of flange, but when I do, it has everything I need. Has a great, natural sound and a TON of settings/features. More than I need, to be honest. But I like having options. Great pedal.
