Great On Stage

The LMB-3 Limiter Enhancer pedal is a necessity for live gigs. I have never played on stage without it. The most useful function of the Limiter is the "limiting" of your volume. You are able to set a "slot" of your loudness. It keeps you from getting too loud, but keeps you from playing too soft. This allows your volume to stay uniform. This is definitely a handy pedal.

bass fatness on a major diet

I think the best function that this pedal serves is to somewhat level all the different sounds your bass can make. I play a using a variety of techniques (picks, fingerpicking, tapping, slapping, etc) and before I got this I had a lot of problems with drastic volume shifts when changing playing style. For example, tapping required greater volume, but then if I shifted to playing with a pick I would have a drastic volume increase. The limiter cuts down on these increases somewhat, while enhancing the softer sounds. It sounds kind of weird at first, like the fatness of your sound just got shoved down a narrow pipe, but after you get used to it you wont want to play without it.

Boss LMB-3 is it for you?

I have owned two of these, one I bought thinking I needed it. The other sort of fell into my lap for $8 at a yard sale, who could say no? I got it a few years back thinking I would even out my volume and maybe get a flea-ish pop sound once in a while for fun. It does exactly what it says it does, but I found that I wanted it so rarely that it wasn't even worth bringing along or changing the batteries. The reason for this is that my bass reacted in a way that felt unnatural to me when I had it set to really strong compression. I found that in order to use it tastefully I was setting it where it would not change anything almost at all. On the plus side it does give you some very powerful, confident sounding slap=pop tones if you don't mind the unnatural feeling. It is built very well and the one I bought used seemed to have had a very tough life with out any mechanical or electrical problems.

Ehh

Well this isn't anything to brag about in my opinion. As far as the compression goes it is ok but ive used better. I started to get a slight distortion from mine after a couple days. I hear good things about the digitec though.
