Fork out the cash you wont regret it.
I had the BR864, upgraded to this and ended up keeping the 864. The only difference is the CD burning capability. I keep it hooked up to a laptop anyway so I can just burn it from there. I own a studio and I see a lot of people opting to buy these and in the right hands they can produce very similar quality. It puts me in a precarious spot but I would advise any serious musician to get one of these, knowing full well they may never need me again.
I have a few pieces of advice for anyone who is thinking about getting it. First, buy an AC adapter. This thing goes through batteries. Next, read the manual at least twice. and pay attention while you are doing it. These have some very useful items that would be overlooked if you dont. Also, you can download software from the Roland/Boss website so you can do some editing from the PC which seems easier than doing it on the unit itself. Last, be prepared to buy all of the types instruments you don't already own and some drum mic's. You will go mad until you do.

A great middle of the road priced recorder
I remember back when a good quality recorder would easily cost 3 times as much as this unit. Over the years I have used several Boss BR recording units and everyone has been a great value for the price. The BR900CD is no exception. This is a great compact recording unit. The unit is a 8 track recorder that uses CompactFlash cards which makes carrying the media a snap. The BR900CD has very usable effects (especially for the guitar). The drum patter generator is usable but I would not use them for a final mix. I found that using the drum generator to make a drum scratch track was a very useful feature. I also liked using the drum generator as a practice feature to help a guitarist develop better timing. The unit also has a mastering toolkit which is very usable. The BR900CD also can burn a CD of your mix when you are finished. With all of these features a person could have a small little studio in a box and achieve very good results. The BR900CD is simple to use (which is one of their key goals). With all of these points in mind a person could enter into the world of recording with this unit very easily without much hassle or breaking the bank. I highly recommend the BR900CD.

Very Happy
I purchased this recorder this week and it has been fantastic. I am a hobbyist musician and I have been looking for a recorder in my budget range that would allow me to lay down several tracks with my guitars and bass. It has wonderful sound and plenty of effects. I consider myself a layman when it comes to recording. If you take the time to study the instructions I promise you will not be dissapointed. The range of effects are wide and easy to use. If you are looking for something to have alot of fun with and do some serious home recording the Boss BR900CD will do the job. Take your time and read the directions. With each practice session your playing and recording will improve.

Hip Hop ain't dead with this boss
Being an up and coming hip hop artist studio time can get real expensive, until I got the boss 900. Now i can edit my own tracks with ease and not worry about spending any cash for someone's studio. I can record a track at night, edit it, and have people hearing it the next morning.

Heavy Metal!
It's good for all my hyenaishness...
The BR-900CD is NOT easy to use at first, but once you get the hang of it (it took me 3 hours) it becomes quite simple. It has a wide variety of drum patterns and arrangements that are all customizable. It contains most (if not all) of the guitar effects included in bass pedals and a fair amount of vocal effects. However some of the effects aren't top notch; such as the bass sim, which wil crap out if you transition from a lower string to a higher string. It makes for some really good metal though, and it can do alot of things such as pan, EQ, delay, reverb and so on. If you are looking for an afforable recorder with awesome quality (records at 32-bit quality in stereo), then this is the one for you.
