I read the previous 11 reviews and I'm a little confused because I have over 100 songs on mine and counting. Also, why would you want more imputs? You can only get real good quality by plugging in 1 at a time. For example, if you plug in a guitar, and a michrophone at the same time and scroll through the effects, you'll find either an "ok" guitar sound, or an "ok" mike sound, but never both. 1 will have diminished quality. You are better off putting in the guitar part, and then overdubbing the vocal. I'm also puzzled by the reviews about the drum machine feature on this. I have the 1200, and my buddy has the 1600. We've been using both for years, and have completely givin up on the drum machine. Never has worked right on either one. And if you want to use the owners manual to figure it out, I hope you have a Harvard digital electronics engineering degree, otherwise, you'll be completely bald from pulling you hair out.
The BR1200 takes a long time to boot up--longer than my 3 yr old PC. When it's ready, it's wonderful to have 12 tracks at my disposal, fine-sounding effects, and an easy menu system. I like the sweetening effect of the mastering utility. I do wish I could apply line or guitar effects to vocals like the old BR-532 could. The controls are very easy to learn and markers are quite helpful. Very natural to use this instead of a mouse. I prefer to synch the BR1200 with an external drum machine, as it's easier for me to customize my drum backing that way. But syncing requires lots of fussing with menus on every song. The BR1200 was clearly designed to be used with its internal drums. The other complaint is the USB connectivity. It's cumbersome and time-consuming, requiring lengthy format conversions for each track, followed by a lengthy transfer to PC. Copying one song's worth of tracks takes a long time! It makes sense to use USB to transfer finished, mastered songs to the PC, but not individual tracks. This multi-tracker is great if your workflow is the same as the designers intended. For me, I want a fast way to jot down new ideas, and the machine's sluggishness startup irks me. I'd consider another model (using flash memory) if I lost it.
I have used this devise for over half a year with absolutly no problems. This is a perfect starter studio and will set you on the right path to the "big time," digital recorders. It is perfect for highschool musician, being one myself. This devise could be worked by a first grader and i am confidents that it will be very effective and easy. The one problem with this devise, for me at least, is the memory capacity. Although it can handle about 20 songs, unless you back it onto a more powerful hard-drive, you will run in to problems frequently filling up your memory.
