The Coolest Amp on the Planet.

By Perry Nichols _

I would say that this amp sounds like it has the best tones of a classic Vox, a classic Fender (Blackface or 50's tweed) and even a low watt Marshall all available with a click of the footswitch. The 6V6 50's side can yield Howlin' Wolf to overdriven ZZ top- esque tones, while the Blackface side can evoke those sounds of "Her Satanic Majesty's Requests" to "Seven Nation Army" etc. The 12ax7s in the 6v6 preamp can really growl, sing or create the impression of an envelope filter on the notes, especially those in the lowest range of the guitar. The EL84 is so versatile that it can mimic almost any early Beatles or Who tone, smooth Scofield funk, or overdriven punk tones of Foo Fighters or the modern distortion of Radiohead. When overdriven in the Top Boost mode of the EL84 side you may notice a envelope-follower quality for the higher notes, thus you get an amazing special effect when you overdrive the two in parallel mode and combine them (this may also be due to rectifier tube sag which is cool)! You can combine the seperate amplifier's tones together in any proportion: clean EL84 and clean 6V6, Dirty EL84 and Dirty 6V6, Clean El 84 w/ Saturated 6V6, Overdriven EL84 w/ Clean 6V6. The tone combinations are practically limitless. If you're like me and you want to be able to access Fender tone or a Vox tone at the drop of a hat or you want to explore mixing them, this is the amp for you! Not only this the included attenuator allows you to vary the volume while adjusting the saturation of the output tubes. This way you can have clean preamp tube tone combined with saturated/overdriven output tubes, which is a very subtle, smooth and pleasing type of distortion, at "bedroom" volume levels. I feel that tye G12H30 (included stock in the combo) is a very "peaky" and prone to feedback in the mid-high range w/ this amp, but once I further attenuated it I found it very useful.

I am still learning how to use all the sounds on this amp, but so far whatever I do on it sounds amazing. It has 6x3 British amp profiles (6 gain/tone profiles and 3 voices for each) and 2 American settings (blackface/tweed) with variable tone and volume on each and then stack mode to put these two channels in series, which I haven't even had time to mess with because I am still discovering what all the tones are with the el84 and 6v6 channels while switching between single coil and humbucker. And the switchable attenuator is great too, it is a variable attenuator when switched on and can allow the amp to make fantastic tone at a reasonably low volume, if you turn the attenuator off, well this puppy gets pretty loud and sounds even better. The only thing I haven't done with it is make a metal tone with out effects but then again that is not my style, and I have not driven the thing all the way up with the attenuator off yet. It does seem to work well with pedals but it sounds so good without anything else in the chain, I have pretty much stayed with playing straight through so far, except for a little bit of experimenting with overdrive and boost and playing with some clean sounds with delay and modulation. I haven't tried it through other cabinets yet but I want to try driving different speakers to see what the differences are with other speaker models. I also can't wait to isolate it and mic it, it sounds so good now I can't imagine what it will sound like driven all the way with attenuator off! I was striving for the kind of overdrive Rich Robinson gets and was also looking at Reason Amps, this Bogner happened to work out first and I am very happy with it's rich natural breakups from slight to a very healthy growl. And so many possible sounds from Fender to a ton of different British sounds. The switching works well too, can switch from 6v6 to EL84 to a combination of the two all with the footswitch.
