The focus switch is great for beginners. Its almost like blue already made an eq for you so you don't really have to know anything about eq to make vocals sound "okay". For me, the focus switch is pointless. I got 2 of these as new overheads for drums. They work amazingly and I couldn't be any happier. I also used this for a neck mic on an acoustic guitar. Sounds great. It's blue quality, but cheaper.

Reliability: I've had this mic for three years now and it's generally held up. The pop filter doesn't really hold up well and it is primarily there for aesthetic purposes so not much of a loss in that department. Get a separate pop filter or create your own. I haven't had any major issues with the shock mount though it is difficult to hang the mic in any other position than vertical with the capsule up top. Looks/feel: It is a very beautiful mic, I have the blue model which is very appealing to the eyes. It has a little weight to it which gives the impression of a solid build. Sound(99% of what matters): I have mic'd amps, vocals, acoustic guitars, drums and some sound effects. Amps: Actually a very nice sound, very smooth and full on clean settings, thick with dirty settings and a little lacking on heavier distortion. Compared to an sm57 though, I'd probably prefer the spark on dirty and clean amp micing. Vocals: this mic is a heavy gamble for vocals. Generally if you have a somewhat heavy voice do not buy this as a vocal mic. This mic does work pretty well on light, airy female vocals so take what you want from that. acoustic guitar: Pretty good sound, not phenomenal in any sense, but clear and appealing. Does not have a studio album feel, more of a live acoustic ambiance about it. Drum overheads: Can handle the sound, but certainly not the best mic I've heard on overheads, a little thin. Conclusion: this mic is okay at most things and good at a select few. I would head somewhere else to find a universal usage mic. maybe a at2050 or the like. There are a lot of options in this price range.

blue making new friends

By Noah Montena

from Syracuse, NY

Comments about Blue Spark Studio Microphone:

The Spark has most of the same audio characteristics and build quality as the Bluebird, and other Blue "clean" transistor mics, but is one of their cheapest, so it should push anyone who has been waiting to buy a Blue mic over the edge. The Spark also has some nice touches and improvements over previous Blues, so even if you already own a higher model, you might want a Spark. The custom pop filter attaches to the mic housing, but, unlike the Bluebird screen, the Spark's fastens with just one captive screw, rather than with a two-piece collar, making it much easier to install or remove. The included wood box is large, but fits the shockmount and pop filter in addition to the Spark, so now you don't have to rummage around for those parts later, when you can't remember where you last put them. And the Spark has a "focus" button, which is really just a low cut filter, but it's nice to have that option on a mic this inexpensive. Also, the Spark is bright orange, so there's that.

Bang for your Buck

By Yochanan

from Providence. Rhode Island

Comments about Blue Spark Studio Microphone:

I just got the mic in today and used it for a live recording of electric guitar, bass and drum along with akg 220 perception and I am amazed by how good the spark actually sounds in comparison. The focus switch was a nice touch for making the drums come in more clear. I can't wait to use it for more applications. Worth the money for sure.

Best small diaphragm condensor in this price range.

By Chris

from Seattle,Wa.

Comments about Blue Spark Studio Microphone:

This microphone sounds good on most sources. Great on acoustic guitars, percussion i.e. shakers, tambourines etc, drum overheads, and in front of electric guitar amps. Can sound great on vocals with the right voice. I purchased 2 of these for stereo recording acoustic guitars and as drum overheads. Even though they are not consecutive serial numbers or a matched pair, they excel in these 2 areas. Disengage the focus swich (just a fancy name for a high pass filter) and acoustic guitars are full sounding and detailed, with all frequencies represented well. With the focus switch engaged, extra low end energy from the kick and floor toms are nicely controlled when used as drum overheads. This mic is strongly built. No flimsy plastic or cheap looking contruction anywhere, it is all top notch. It even comes in a cherry stained custom wood case. Presentation is first class. The only negative that keeps this from being a 5 star mic is the flimsy shock mount and a mediocre pop filter. The shockmount is made of aluminum and looks fantastic, but the screw mount on the base is very hard to turn, as the machined aluminum binds on itself. Also the wingnut to tighten the adjustment pivot does not seem to hold very well, so a bump to the stand can cause the mic to move from position. The custom pop filter looks amazing as well, but cannot handle hard plosives that a good pop filter should. Overall I strongly recommend this microphone to anyone looking for a professional sound at a project price.

Comments about Blue Spark Studio Microphone:

hope this bad boy work's great but after many website searches for reviews seems that this is the right choice. I had a old Gt-55 old mic from '05 i worked that bad boy i have recorded many artist on it including myself. artist from babygrande records home to rza of wutang and canabus and many more.. so i worked it but i dont' want to spend to much money when i know ill make it sound ill on the eq and mixing mastering end... so im sure that this mic will do the trick and take me to that blue sound i want. eventually i will go up a few more notches in blue... i have recorded on a blue mic before myself i loved it. i can't review this mic yet but as soon as i get it in and record i will let yall know..regardless for 2bills you can't beat that price from a well reputable company such as blue. i know i wont be dissapointed.

Awesome mic

By Mau

from Qro, Mexico

Comments about Blue Spark Studio Microphone:

I had work with blue mics in the past so I decided to order this one for my home studio and I'm quite impressed with the quality of both the mic itself and the sound you can get from it, really warm and present. The focus control button is basically a high pass filter around 120 Hz but it definitely comes handy sometimes . The shock-mount and the pop filter are really good quality too and are a nice plus. For the price you can't go wrong.

Great Buy

By Yochanan

from Providence, RI

Comments about Blue Spark Studio Microphone:

I just got mine in the mail today and and I was far from disappointed. I recorded electric guitar, bass and drums live with the spark, along with an akg 220 perception to compare the two. The blue had much greater clarity and was i was more able to distinguish the instruments from one another. I will definitely be using this mic anytime I record anything from now on. Definitely get your bang for your buck, cant wait to use it for more applications.

Amazing .

By Stafford

Comments about Blue Spark Studio Microphone:

This mic is incredible. Perfect for people who are on a budget but who want a good name brand mic. Only problems are it hums if to close to speakers (which it shouldn't be anyway) and the pop filter isn't to great . Otherwise its Really good . The Focus Control switch is really helpful too . Blue does it again.

Great recording mic.

By Jason

from New Castle, PA

Comments about Blue Spark Studio Microphone:

I've had this mic for about 3 weeks now. I use it in my home studio and have recorded myself and the lead singer of another band. His band does pop punk type music similar to "all time low", I sing more poppy rock/blues music. This mic sounds great for both. It's very very clear and vocals come out way better with this mic than any other mic I've used. I've had 2 minor problems with the mic. First, the pop filter sucks at a close range. It works but not well enough. Not a problem though I just use a seperate pop filter. Second problem bothers me a little more and that is the shock mounts makes a lot of noise if the mic is bumped. That's disappointing cause with the quality of this mic I don't want anything else to get in the way. Overall a WONDERFUL mic though
