The Blue Dragonfly Microphone employs an innovative design to offer you fine tuning and precise placement. The Dragonfly mic will please the most discerning recordist. Combines ease of use that is without equal among contemporary microphones with a price that is considerably less than anything in its class. The Dragonfly mic is winner of both the 2001 TEC Award and an Electronic Musician's 2001 Editor's Choice award.

The Dragonfly is a unique pressure-gradient cardioid condenser microphone, employing Blue's hand-built single-membrane large-diaphragm capsule coated with a 6-micron mylar film of pure gold and aluminum. Enclosed within a rotating spherical grille, the capsule can be positioned and adjusted in the smallest spaces. Complete with an integrated elastic shockmount, the microphone's electronics are based on a Class-A discrete circuit, with a transformerless output. The Dragonfly mic's sonic character gives flight to everything from vocals to percussion, electric guitar and bass, as well as more difficult sources such as saxophones and stringed instruments.
Requires phantom power.

Crisp vocals with a nice top end

By Erik Cereghino

from Los Angleles, CA

Comments about Blue Dragonfly Microphone:

I'm no sound engineer so if you think this review is a little off, you're probably correct. I'm a student that raps and have been experimenting with different microphones for a while. I was lucky to be able to book a few studio sessions recently (in a real studio) and have been checking out different mics. From an AKG C 414, TCM 102 and a few other somewhat high end microphones that weren't necessarily made for what i was using them for but you just gotta try them all. I played with this one a bit and found a sweet spot which is very crisp flat and a good top end which i realized what i really needed for rap cause there is already plenty of bass on the track. I'm still trying other microphones right now but really enjoy this one over the instrumentals im using. However be careful, many people i could see just want to buy this mic or enjoy it because of how it looks, thats why i was first interested but after i kept listening and comparing i found to really sound good for myself at least.

Diverse, Crisp, Flexible, Clean and Affordable

By George

from Fort Collins, CO

Comments about Blue Dragonfly Microphone:

This is my go-to mic for almost everything. Electric guitars sound full and wide, male vocals are as uncolored as you can get without spending $3k on a Neumann U87, and are crisp, clean, requiring very little EQing (haven't tried female vox yet). Acoustic guitars are very silky and smooth when using correct placement and especially sound great when using a blend of the Dragonfly with an SM58. I don't know why exactly but this combo really sings. I also use it for hand percussion and as an overhead. Honestly nothing has sounded bad through this thing! I'm really surprised that Blue managed to create something so good for so little money. Major props to you guys and gals! I tried this mic out next to the U87 (which IS better but not 3K better IMHO), next to the TLM 102 (which didn't sound that much better), the Rode NT1 (which was pretty nice too for the price), the AKG C414 (which was similar quality but more money), and a Shure 58 for a baseline starting point, since I've used that mic for years. After all that my choices were easily narrowed to the Dragonfly and the U87. I can't afford the U87 so I went with the next best thing IMO. I believe every home recording musician and pro studio should have one.

Not as good as they say...

By Visser Studios

from Twin Cities, MN

Comments about Blue Dragonfly Microphone:

I bought two of these, not matched, but they were close enough for a couple sessions. Immediately upon using these mics I had to EQ the highs. They are a bit brittle and add too much "air" beyond use. I bought them from a good review of recording classical piano. On another session, they had so much RF interference, they ruined a session. THANKS BLUE, YOU COST ME MONEY. I used other mics with no problem. I sold these mics back to guitar center and bought some TLM103s. I also have to EQ out some high end, but at least they didn't pick up RFs. I will not use BLUE again. My main mics are Scheops and my pres are Millennias. I've recorded in members of the Minnesota Orchestra and Opera in Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis and world-class jazz musicians. I would not trust BLUE for these sessions. There are so many other companies within that budget to choose from. Don't make the mistake by buying BLUE. On a good note, they do look flashy and the price has dropped substantially.

Comments about Blue Dragonfly Microphone:

I purchased one and have been able to use it on any instrument: vocals, drums, guitars, is particularly splendid on Male Vocals as you can turn the capsule up or down to "fine tune" your sound based on your vocal pitch. I am a drummer and I really like this on my overheads and as a room mic. I run it through my ADL600 and I get a ULTRA clean sound! Add some Waves and your sounding like a million bucks!!

Nice Mic

By Guitarold

from Sacramento, Ca

Comments about Blue Dragonfly Microphone:

This is a great mic. The Blue stuff really intrigued me and I bought this for a recording project. I weas very impressed with it but eventually went to other mics that favored my voice better. You can't beat the quality. Just check some reviews on what it sounds best with and youll be set.
