Overview

This Cajon Pedal from Meinl leaves your hands unrestricted to play patterns while keeping steady kick drum rhythms beneath. The soft beater, smooth horizontal cable, and cradle-like mount combined with dual adjustable spring tension gives you a natural and stable feel beneath your foot, allowing you to create an infinite amount of grooves with total relaxation.

Located on both the pedal and beater mount are adjustable springs that allow you to dial-in the amount of response you require. Double strokes come effortlessly and dynamics are easy to control. The cable system is positioned horizontally to give the beater the best reaction time while relieving the cable of any tension areas. Heavy-duty spurs are located on contact points with the ground to prevent slippage and may be threaded all the way in or out for different types of flooring. Convert your cajon into a kick drum with the Meinl Cajon Pedal!

I've read a lot of reviews for cajon pedals. This pedal has higher ratings than nearly all other pedals on the BIG internet sites. Additionally, I had an opportunity to check it out at NAMM before it was officially released and I was impressed. So, I was excited to get one.

Initially, It feels much heavier and solid than I expected and looks GREAT out in front of my cajon.

When I received it, there was a lot of travel in the pedal, and play in the cable. The pedal nearly hit the floor before the beater hit the cajon. Luckily there are many adjustments available. The pedal also includes the tools to make these adjustments.

So, I rolled the cable attachment back a bit on both cam shafts. This took up a lot of the slack and now the attachment pulls the cable straight out of the guide. It reduced the travel of both the pedal and the beater. I also rolled the chain attachment back a bit to raise the pedal.
Now the pedal has GREAT action and is much more responsive. The pedal requires a minimal press to get a solid satisfying thump out of my cajon.
I also adjusted the angle of the beater so that it hits the cajon straight on and just sounds great!

It is a load of fun to play my cajon with my big fat Meinl Cajon brushes, or play a shaker in my right hand and brush on cajon with my left. I even offset the beater assembly a bit so I can do some tone bending on the face of the cajon with one foot.

My biggest concern with this pedal, as with many others, is cable breakage. I'm hoping that having adjusted the pedal to reduce the slack and minimize how hard it needs to be pressed will protect the cable a bit more.
Bicyclists and many other industries have been using cable technology for years so this must be a viable way to do this. I think Meinl has it right. But, just like I have extra guitar strings, I think I'll be looking for a replacement cable just in case. It doesn't seem too

I will be updating this review as I use this pedal in practice and performance.

Bought this to use my cajon as a "bass drum" with an acoustic duo I am working with. Played two practices, one light gig (5 songs). Set up to practice at home and about 30 minutes in I noticed the cable had frayed almost to the point of breaking. I had diligently set it up as carefully as possible to minimize cable strain and "rubbing" at the beater end. Low and behold it frayed at the FACTORY fitting right below the beater.

I had read about this happening but was convinced it had to be a set up issue. Nope...just not designed for any type of "drummer's" bass drum pedal playing. Probably work fine for a cajon player who just needs to tap out singles on the 1 and 3 etc. But any more than that seems to put too much strain on the cable because of how it is attached.

Kinda bummed out, because I had just gotten it to where I could get some nice expressive playing out of it... Oh well.

Comments about Meinl Chain Drive Cajon Pedal with Soft Beater and Adjustable Spring Tension:

This product is over engineering at it's best. Spend the extra $$ and get the DW. I bought both to do a side by side comparison and there is no comparison. The Meinl pedal has poor response, average quality, it's bulky and doesn't travel well. No bag provided. The DW has excellent response the first time you set it up. Sets up quick and travels well in the bag provided.

This pedal was hardly playable out of the box. After spending a couple hours on several adjustments I got it working well. After playing for a bit the pedal was unplayable again. None of the adjustments held. This has continued to happen. The pedal is also really noisy. I gave up on it at my last gig.

Comments about Meinl Chain Drive Cajon Pedal with Soft Beater and Adjustable Spring Tension:

This is a great pedal. Multiple points of adjustment allow a person to really dial in the action. The large-mass beater adds a lot of low end frequencies to your strike, as opposed to other beater types out on the market. The beater will also keep unnecessary marring of the soundboard of your Cajon. Just be sure to set up, tighten and make all adjustments prior to use.

This pedal is SERIOUSLY over-engineered. Like another reviewer stated, the cable (same sort of cable that bicycle handbrake cables are made from) frayed out. I've gone through 2 cables. The amount of adjustments are insane. After seeing and playing the DW cajon pedal, there is no question that it is a more solid pedal. I'll be upgrading to that one in the near future. Save your money and look else-where. I was really bummed, was so excited about this pedal but it's simply not worth the frustration.

Comments about Meinl Chain Drive Cajon Pedal with Soft Beater and Adjustable Spring Tension:

After doing a lot of research and a successful test drive, I bought this pedal to augment my cajon playing for my band's bar/restaurant semi-plugged gigs. From day 1 the pedal has been unreliable—adjustments to tension do not stick. It has not lasted a full 2- or 3-hour gig in the 6-8 months I have owned it, and on several occasions during gigs, I have straight-up disassembled it in favor of playing bass tones with my hands or brushes.

However, it is steadier in much lower-volume, lighter-playing practice or rehearsal settings.

If I decide to get another canon pedal, I will likely get the DW. For now, I am doing a double cajon rig, affixing cajon pedal beaters to my DW9000 single pedal and hooking it up to my secondary box to create a bass drum cajon setup, which frees me up to play my primary in a number of different ways.

I will be returning this and trying a direct drive shaft (similar to a double pedal) instead of a cable drive shaft. This product was decent and might even be the best option. I won't know for sure until I try the direct drive. I found myself wanting to execute techniques that the pedal didn't have the response and speed to pull off.

Comments about Meinl Chain Drive Cajon Pedal with Soft Beater and Adjustable Spring Tension:

This is a very sturdy, heavy, well-built pedal, but not very functional, nor does it live up to the manufacturer's claim of responsiveness. I bought it to replace my Gibraltar cajon pedal, which is somewhat sluggish, making it difficult to do quick doubles. I found the Meinl pedal to be no better, and it was VERY noisy owing to the articulated linkages at the footboard and pedal. It's possible I may have been able to dial in the adjustments to get better response, but the noisy operation was a deal-breaker. When you're in an unplugged setting (which is where the cajon is typically found), this sort of think just will not work.

tried this product in the store. the cable drive sticks, not a very responsive action. also, I have an oversize cajon (Pearl Boom), the base plate was not deep enough to fit it in. I tried the LP in the store...huge difference in responsiveness and action, better beater. Probably OK if used at home or ocassionaly...not for the working percussionist that gigs 3-4 x per week plus rehearsal.

Its a fun toy. I am still trying to get the cable retainer replaced. It came damaged, and my only option was to return it for a replacement which seemed ridiculous for such a small part. It took me over a month to have it delivered, and now I am into three months waiting for this small part. It has not affected its operation and I have been enjoying using it.

This pedal is just the ticket... I play right hand on top... But left with my feet... So i play open hand... This pedal let me use anyone rig without have to tear it down... It works smooth and feel's great... Good stuff.
