Overview

The Blackstar HT Studio 20H amp head offers huge versatility for home, rehearsal, or studio use and can be used with a variety of cabinets. The carefully voiced preamp coupled with a cathode-biased EL34 power amp, provides the user with the ability to create wonderfully lush valve tones. From pure boutique cleans, to mild overdrive that cleans up by backing off the guitar volume control, up to highly saturated distortion, this tube amp head does it all.

The Blackstar Venue HT Studio's Clean Channel provides a wide range of clean and moderately overdriven tones. The voicing is typical of many 'boutique' style amplifiers with a ringing Class A type performance. The overall character may be adjusted with the Tone control from dark and warm through to bright and sparkling.

The HT Studio 20H Overdrive Channel is characterized by a tone that's high in gain, but lacks any of the detached top-end 'fizz' often found in many similar designs. This is a result of unique preamplifier and power amplifier shaping techniques. The overdrive cleans up beautifully as the guitar volume is reduced, so even at the most extreme settings, the Overdrive Channel on the Blackstar amp head remains natural sounding.

The HT Studio 20H Overdrive Channel also has its own highly flexible EQ section providing a variety of overdriven tones. Blackstar's ISF (Infinite Shape Feature) control represents a major step forward in tone-shaping flexibility. The ISF control shifts the response of the 3-control tone stack between a US-type response at one end, and at the other a UK-type response. Between these two extremes the amp head provides an infinite number of alternative tone choices that would be otherwise unavailable.

The Blackstar HT Studio 20's 2-channel design has been optimized for either preamp or power amp overdrive, or a combination of both. The carefully voiced preamp and cathode-biased dual EL34 power amp configuration provides the user with the ability to create wonderfully lush tube tones. From mild overdrive, that cleans up by backing off the guitar volume control, to highly saturated distortion, this amp does it all.

The HT Studio 20H tube amp head also features a completely natural sounding digital reverb, which is outstandingly musical on both clean and crunch tones and raises the benchmark for guitar amplifier specific reverb design.

A Wonderful Amp

By BRUCE KAY

from Storrs, CT

Title says it all. Sounds amazing. Loud as hell with a 2x12 cab. Great range of drive, from slight distortion to full metal. Clean channel is very good. Simulated output works fine to a board. The 3 EQs on the drive channel are great. My only cut is that it has only one EQ knob for the clean channel, although it is pretty useful.

Gorgeous Tone

By Devin Zorn

from NRH, Tx.

This amps sounds amazing. I had to order this online since my local guitarcenter didn't have it at the store. When it came into the store I compared it to the Marshall DSL15 head (Same price) and I only played 3 chords before I turned it off from how bad it sounded. The Blackstar sounded absolutely astounding though. Like what a Marshall should sound like. It reminds me of a Mesa Boogie Mini Rec. It does the Classic rock tones through to the heavey metal tones. The ISF is an amazing feature and no matter where it is, it sounds pretty dang good. I took this one over the Orang OR15 also, due to it being $200 cheaper and has a much wider range of features and abilities. This amp is PERFECT for studio recording and gigging! ive been playing for quite a few years and recording in my home studio for about as long and i can tell you that you won't be disappointed. Plug it into a Marshall 1960 JCM900 cab and it sings. Get this amp now!

for the price its a 5

By RAYMOND HARMACINSKI

from toledo oh

First let me say right off .. When you read a review and it starts off with " I play worship.." or anything like that.. quit reading... Its like asking a drivers ed student to rate a race car. (out of the way) The ht20 is great for the price.. I will not go over the good stuff thats been said before.. the 20 has a better clean than the HT-5 (actually if you want clean avoid the ht5 or ht5 reverb.. both break up way too early. the 20's got a very nice clean with lots of headroom.. the negative to this is its got a single knob tone control.. so you are stuck with whatever the single dial has to offer.. if this amp weren't so good in every other regard I would knock off 1.5 but at this price you forgive it... The other thing and it has been mentioned but is also annoying is the lack of a standby switch... I really have a problem just letting an amp idle at full power when its not being used..

Where do I begin? I am a Worship Leader/Electric Lead player I can ASSURE you there is NO style this thing can't handle!! This amp will blow your hair off whether LIVE thru a cab OR its PHENOMONAL direct out!! TRUST me, for church's that are CONSTANTLY fighting the "stage volume" problem as we are, this WILL solve it. I am sending this directly to our front-of-house mix and they can't figure out where the mic'd Marshall Stack is hiding!!! BUY THIS AMP!!! Whether you play small clubs/bars or a 7000 seat auditorium or a 200 seat church, THIS IS YOUR NEXT AMP!!

Great Amp for stage or studio

By Joe

from Northern VA

I had a Blackstar HT-5 at one point in time and really enjoyed it. The only issue I had with that amp was stage volume. Some of the places I play do not have floor monitors so the 5 watts the amp put out could not cut over the drummer. Everything else about the amp I loved. Moving forward some time...Blackstar announces they are expanding the Venue series to higher powered alternatives. Some of which have expanded channel settings. I picked up the Ht-20 head going off of the love I had/have for the HT-5 and it does not disappoint. While the 40/60/100 models all have additional channels and/or voicings, this 20 is just like the 5 only louder. Features: For an amp of this cost I feel as though it really delivers in the cost/return department. Two channels with a series effects loop, footswitching, ISF feature.... Quality/Reliability: I have owned 3 different Blackstar amps and never had a single problem with them. I expect this to hold up very well through many upcoming shows. Look/Feel: Sleek black design with some decorative piping on it. Looks nice sitting on whatever cabinet you decide to use. Final thoughts....one big factor that people sometimes overlook in an amp head is the cabinet and speaker choice. These amps are capable of producing more gain than there smaller counterparts and take to pedals very well. I do not find much use for the clean channel (due to my style of music played) but it does its job. Most people do not think of Marshalls (makers of this amp are former employees) for their clean sounds. Thanks for the read. Hope it helps in you deciding to make a purchase.

BlackStar HT-20 Stack

By Ray

from Charleston SC

I recently purchased the HT 20 head and 2- 112 bottoms with the hopes that it could provide everything I like/need in a smaller, lighter package. After playing my Gibsons thru mostly Hiwatt amps for the last 40 years, I can honestly say I have found exactly what I was looking for. BlackStar offers a great sounding package in a smaller footprint, that covers the Hiwatt to Marshall guitar requirements. The amp has basic features with one input and two channels and The digital reverb works well for my needs. Quality & Reliability- I have only own the setup for 2 weeks, so I cannot say much about reliability; it looks to be built very well. The amp stack is attractive and stays in line with the better known British brands. Bottom Line- I am very satisfied and impressed with BlackStar.

good things come in small packages

By Rodger

from vineland newjersey

i own a carvin v3100 head a rebel 20 ; avox nightrain and a peavey classic 50 dual channel. Each powers 3 seperate stacks of cabs. one a marshall stack with celletions 2 cabs ; another egnator cabs 2 and 2 b-52 cabs all are unique in sound but all are pure quality. Know for the blackstar 20 head . Its built like a tank your able to run to full cabs from it. Its sound is quite unique for you can dial in a variety of sounds using a multitude of features.I won;t go over whats been already said. For the price the quality of build and sound are unbeatable. It loves pedals and effects processors which i run threw them all. Depending on your style of playing this amp is great for all venues of music except maybe death metal. or thrash metal. It covers everything else great. Like i said buy one if you don;t like it bring it back in 30 days and get a full refund. I doubt that will happen. Easy to set up easier to use. For me at 48 I;m not into interfacing my guitars with computers. I;m old fashioned .I think in the future blackstar will be a company along with egnator vox and carvin to deal with . Lets see if it lasts the final test ..time.

Top amp!

By Victor

from CT

Blackstar is quickly becoming my favorite amp company. I played the HT 5 and that was awesome, but like some of us, I wanted a little more power. BAM! HT20 is here. This amp is great. It has very good vintage sounding cleans with adjustable tone (which is mostly the brightness) and it gets loud while not getting that crunchy which I like. Nice headroom. The overdrive is awesome. Crunch to shred lead. The master vol. and reverb are a huge plus and the amp sounds great at low volumes to. be carefull though, for it tends to get hot. On the back is a vent window that has a plastic wire fence protecting it. If you leave it in a hot area or leave it on for really long, that plastic fence may melt. It happened to my buddys HT 5. It won't hurt anything, but it's just a cosmetic thing that you'll never see unless u look. Overall, it the perfect amp for indoors at home or clubs. A really great sounding 20 W head amp.
