Overview

Equipped with 2 channels and 4 modes the Blackstar HT Club 40 is an ideal gigging tube amp for club-sized venues. The 40W EL34-driven power amplifier has amazing punch and dynamics that will easily cut through in a full band situation. Switching to the amazing overdrive channel-equipped with ISF (Infinite Shape Feature)-accesses 2 more modes: 'classic crunch' and 'super saturated lead.'

The Clean Channel on the Blackstar Venue tube amp has 2 modes, 'boutique' and 'modern' and its own Tone control provides a wide range of clean tones. The Voice switch reconfigures both the preamplifier voicing and gain structure, and the power amplifier damping, to reproduce either ringing Class A Performance in the 'boutique' mode, or very clean and tight Class AB tones in the 'modern' setting.

The Overdrive Channel has its own EQ section and a Voice switch that allows the character of the channel to be changed, providing a wide variety of overdriven tones.

The channel is characterized by a tone that's high in gain, but lacks any of the detached top-end 'fizz' often found in similar designs. This is a result of unique preamplifier and power amplifier shaping techniques, which cleans up the overdrive beautifully as the guitar volume is reduced. Even at the most extreme settings, the overdrive channel remains natural sounding. The ISF (Infinite Shape Feature) control is unique to Blackstar Amplification and represents a major step forward in tone shaping flexibility. The Blackstar amplifier's ISF control shifts the response of the 3-control tone stack between a US-type response at one end, and at the other a UK-type response. The tube amp provides an infinite number of alternative tone choices in between the 2 extremes that would be otherwise unavailable.

The Blackstar HT Club 40 tube amp also features a completely natural sounding digital reverb, which is outstandingly musical on both clean and crunch tones. A Dark/Bright switch allows the overall reverb characteristics to be modified to suit different tastes and playing styles.

This amp is brilliant amp for any kind of genre. It has a beautiful clean sound and distortion sound with a voice switch for each channel which changes the tone of the amp from a classic style to a modern style, and out of all the amps that i've tried, this is probably the best amp for distortion and getting the sound you want. From left to right, on the front panel, you have the input, clean volume, clean voice and the clean tone. Then you have the overdrive indicator and overdrive selector. Then you have your three overdrive knobs, gain, voice and volume. Then the three normal knobs bass middle and treble. You also have a very unusual knob called the ISF, it changes the type of tone you want out of the amp. When it is fully counter clockwise, it sounds more aggressive (USA), and fully clockwise has a less aggressive sound (UK). After you ISF, you have your reverb control which controls the overall level of your reverb effect. Then at the back panel, you have a reverb Dark/Light button. In the out position the digital reverb is voiced to have a warm dark quality. When the Light position is selected the reverb has a brighter quality with more zing on the reverb tail. Overall, i think this is a very good amp and when you look at it, it really warms your heart, and if you are looking for a great sound that is stuck inside your head, this is the amp to get. This high gain amp is all you need for median sized gigs.

Bought one in August 2012. Returned in Sept. 2012 due to a loud hum. Went through GC who accepted even though it was a few days past their allowable in-store return policy. That was much appreciated. New one arrived a few days later and has been fine until a couple weeks ago when it started completely cutting out. Probably the cheap plastic lined input jack. It is now 3 to 4 months past the one-year warranty. The amps have both extremely well cared for and gently handled. The first one never left my home and the replacement went to our air-conditioned practice location and has been brought to two gigs. To me, this level of quality or lack thereof is ridiculous. Forget trying to contact them through the US Contact tab on their website as it redirects to Korg USA and their contact link is a dead link. No excuse for any of this. Now I will have to pay out of pocket at one of their US approved service locations. At least that link worked. Would rate Zero Stars if that were an option........

OMG....What?

By Bob Osbourne

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

No seriously. I bought this amp based on tons of positive online reviews. Honestly though, I really liked what I heard when I played this amp in person at a local store. Also, YouTube has quite a few decent videos of the HT40. So I decided to get the amp. I got a chance to play around with the amp for a week or so to get used to it, find the sweeter areas with the settings. I thought it sounded ok... I mean, it has a decent clean sound if you really roll off the guitar volume. The crunch is there. It puts out quite a bit of gain. I think the reverb is middle ground...nothing spectacular. Then it came time to really put it to the test...in a live setting. I showed up, everyone was stoked to hear the new amp. All was going well, but something wasn't right...tough to put a finger on. Then one of the band members told me that the amp sounded good, but it was kind of sterile. He said it lacked something, maybe character. The amp does sound ok, but the music doesn't really come alive with this thing. After hearing the song through playback, I agreed with him. I used it for another couple of weeks, changing tubes..the speaker, but couldn't get the thing to wake up. I returned the amp to stock and sent it back. Still lookin.

Great amp for the price.

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I had been looking for an affordable tube amp on a tight budget. I looked at Egnaters, used Mesas, and a few others before learning about Blackstar. I decided on this one because of its sound and features, and it was well within my budget! Initially I was a little concerned about having only a single tone knob for the clean channel, but between the voice feature and the excellent tone quality of the clean channel my concerns were quickly dispelled. I love the clean channel. The OD channel is also excellent. You can easily dial in anything from slight crunch to paint peeling distortion, and the voice and ISF features are very fine. The digital reverb is much nicer than I expected. The amp takes pedals very well in front or in the effects loop, but I enjoy the unadorned sonic capabilities of the amp so much that I've been playing my Strat Plus and G&L ASAT without pedals or the amp's reverb. It sounds great all by itself. It's very quiet and is highly responsive to finger pressure and attack, chiming or whoofing on demand. The build quality appears to be very good, and I received a reponse from Blackstar w/in twenty four hours to a concern I had that turned out to be unrelated to the amp. I am highly pleased with this amp and enjoy plugging in. I recommend it!

Winner!

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I tried and returned these amps recently: Marshall Class 5 Jet City JCA20 (head + cab) Blackstar HT-5 mini-stack ...tested these in store: Egnator Tweaker Orange Tiny Terror ...a bunch of others... In my opinion, if you take the best parts of the amps listed above and roll them into a single package, you get the HT-40. It's got more power on tap, but the master volume works wonderfully. Beautiful jingle-jangle clean channel and a very wide range of dirt. Like the Tweaker, the control layout is pretty simple, yet gives you an amazing amount of sonic options. Plenty of power to gig and excellent 'bedroom' manners all in a right-sized combo. I'm very happy!

It doesn't take a fortune to sound like a million bucks.

By Phil Phillips

from Virginia Beach, VA

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I was turned towards this combo as soon as I read every review and research article I could find pointing my towards it. I brought my Les Paul BFG and 57 Custom VOS Gold Top to trick this amp into showing my it's range flaws. I was very impressed at the tonal capability and the ISF selector is very resourceful. (Note: It doesn't phase in with a flat mid selected) The only other less than stellar feature is the reverb loop. After getting home and plugging in my Holy Grail Reverb it really took all the stock out of the built in feature. I suppose it is a nice last minute dig if you need it away from home and are lacking pedals. Overall I would say my experience with Blackstar has made me a true fan and I firmly believe it is the next Marshall of it's time. This line will be a great vintage collector someday when Blackstar is the standard.

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

i set out to my local music store to buy a fender hotrod,my trusted friend and dealer introduced me to the blackstar,I had not heard of this brand but gave it a shot.I am a tube tone freak and it resonated fantastic, I brought it home, plugged in my gibson marauder and proceeded to experiment.I personally did not like the distortion channel, but then i never do.I then switched it to clean, turned the volume all the way up, bumped up the bass, brought down the treble and mid and BINGO... that classic, natural, ball tingling distortion was ringing sweetly in my ears, brought my guitar volume down and a great clean tone emerged.I am old school and not a tech kind of guy so i like amps that allow a stupid guy like me to get my variance from my guitar knobs, i love this amp...

Great Sound A Little Worried About Quality

By DAVID THORNELL

from Chesterfield MI

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I got mine about a month ago. When I pulled it out of the box, I heard a rattle in the cab. I pull the back off found a loose screw. After a little inspection I found out it was one of the screws holding the transformer in place. I screwed it in and also had to tighten up two of the three remaining screws that hold the tranformer in place as they were loose. I can't believe that this could be missed by some kind of qaulity control check if there was one done. With that being said I really love the sound of this amp. Both clean channel are very good and the overdrive sounds are outstanding. I just hope that it holds up over time.

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

You'd have to pay twice as much to get a tube amp of this quality. Well made! Sounds great! Gives you a nice sounding clean channel and the gain channel makes it easy to dial in any amount of gain wanted from blusey to all out metal distortion. No need for a distortion pedal anymore. I don't see anything else in the price range that comes close. I would compare this with other amps twice its price. And it holds its own if not surpasses the higher priced amps. Get one today!! If you can.

Great Amp

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I thought I would wait a while before doing a review to see how things worked out over a years period. The features are great and the amp has an absolutely beatiful clean tone and a biting dirty sound as good as (better in my opinion) any Marshall in the 1000 dollar or under price range. I have had the amp for over a year now and have had absolutely zero problems with it(it is played every day). It is plenty loud and works great with all of the distortion pedals I own and have found that adding my Mxr 10 channel equalizer pedal in the effects loop increases the clarity by letting you fine tune the sounnd on both channels even more.It is a great amp!!!

What an amp!

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Just picked one up yesterday. Couldn't be happier. I was using a Marshall JCM2000 50w with a 2x12 ex-cab. I was sooooo happy with my Marshall, but, I have a hard time carrying it to gigs and needed to down size (sad but true....I'm old...lol). The Blackstar filled the void nicely. Plenty of balls and an unbelievable clean channel. The voicing is very warm and ...wow, you can dial in anything your heart desires for sound. I am going to add the ex-cab soon. BUY THIS AMP, it is the sound in your head...

Happy Blackstar Picked Me

By ADAM MCCLINCEY

from Virginia

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Truthfully when I walked into Guitar Center I wanted a Marshall Haze 40 combo. As fate would have it Marshall themselves have told thier distributors to stop selling them. Ewwww bad news. My second choice was the Blackstar HT 40; and I am very very happy that the guitar gods stepped in and changed up the plan. I was worried that part of the pre-amp stage was solid-state on these amplifiers. I thought it would take some of the dynamics, and warmth away. I can say with out a doubt that it was nothing to worry about. The cleans sound great!! I prefer the first voicing as it has nice break up. The dirty channel is where this amplifier shines though. It is extremely versitile. You can go from a 70's chuga chuga crunch to a low gain AC/DC, then move into 80's metal Iron Maiden/Priest, then push it further into modern nu metal. It really does go that far if you use a combination of the two voice settings, the ISF, and the standard tone stack. The ISF really does alter the way the entire tone stack reacts to your guitar. The dynamics are excellent, and react to either pick attack or your guitar's volume knob. The only reason for not giving it 5 stars is lack of bass/mid/tre tone stack for clean channel, and the effects loop should be foot switchable.

Great amp for the price.

By wesley

Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40 40W Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I have been looking for an amp to use for household use, but still being loud enough to jam with friends when necessary. Also I travel a lot so I wanted something easily transportable and compact. I was used to playing out of a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier but I did not want to spend that kind of money. I went to my local guitar center, and who else was there? None other than a representative of Blackstar, and he showed me their entire HT line. He showed me all of the features, and how well the IFS technology works. Also, he showed me the reverb settings on the back of the amp. This made the clean channel have more of a dark spring like reverb that you get on a fender amp. The ability to have one channel be full blown Marshall like sounding, and then a clean channel like a 6l6 Fender amp was incredible. The distortion tones you get out of this amp are out of this world. You can get your modern metal tones, your djenty tone, your fuzzed out Stoner metal sounds. Honestly I don?t think there is a tone you can?t get out of this amp. The price is right, and the quality is easily apparent. Great job Blackstar, and you have a big fan in me. Thanks!
