I got my DISTX about a month ago and I love it. It has all the power and feel of a genuine high gain tube head like Randall or Marshall. It is limited in its tonal options though. The gain once past 2 on the dial sounds the same. the 3-band EQ works well and the ISF does give a change in the overall sound, but the distortion tone is always the same. On its own its a great sounding pedal. Light years ahead of any non tube distortion unit. But, you throw an MXR 10 band EQ in front of it and you can get any leval of crazy gain you want. You can even nail a Mesa Dual Rec sound perfectly. I have had several quility high end amps, so I know what heavy gain should sound like. This has that heavy saturated distortion thats thick and powerful, and not thin and raspy like a lot of "metal" pedals. So again, on its own, its a Randall in a box. With a good EQ pedal, its any kind of monster you want it to be. Try it out.

I bought this pedal thinking it could replace my Sansamp GT2 and my Damage Control Solid Metal pedal. The reality was it could not replace either pedal. I use the sansamp to go direct to a boom box when i play at night and i use the DCSM pedal in front of a clean amp for some serious high gain tones. The Distx has a nice creamy tube like tone but it certainly isn't the "filth" machine that is used in the marketing by Blackstar. The gain control on this pedal has a limited range similar to the tone controls and past 2 'o clock the gain just bottoms out and the pedal just gets noisier. The ISF feature is also a huge disappointment as there isn't a very dramatic difference from the opposite ends of the dial. For the same price you could get the DCSM pedal, add an inexpensive DI box and you would have a combo that has much better tones than the Distx.

Insane Gain

By MIKE MURDOCK

from CT

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DISTX Tube High Gain Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I play in several bands that cover everything from rock to metal. I picked up the Blackstar DistX for that extra bit of insane gain I couldn't get from my other pedals or Marshall amp. The first thing you realize is that the pedal is a larger format and required some pedal board planning to accommodate it and it's dedicated power cable. Note: Be careful where that goes because the transformer can add noise to you signal! Once that was settled I plugged it in, set everything for noon and gave it a go. Immediate tonal impression was that this pedal does one thing and that is high gain - no surprise! If you're looking for a low gain range look elsewhere. Even at the lowest gain setting it is still putting out lots of distortion. After 2:00 the gain doesn't increase but gets more 'squishy' like my old 5150 used to. So I guess you say it is very amp-like in its responsiveness and tonal qualities.Roll past noon with the output level and there's enough volume to push the front end of a tube amp. The DistX definitely has a scooped mid leaning. That's ok for the bedroom, but I found playing with the band I need to just about max the mids to cut though. Having owned a Blackstar amp I was familiar with the ISF feature. As with the amp I just ignore the whole American/British jibberish and use it to find the right voicing for the mids. A good way to really hear it affecting the tone is to turn the mids all the way down and sweep the ISF. Working the 2 together helped me find the right mix. The downside: I've found 2 things that bother me. The first is to be expected from a high gain pedal and that is the hissing white noise. Too bad it doesn't have a built in noise gate to tame that. And the second and most annoying is the chrome knobs. Sure they look fantastic, but under stage lights or even just practicing at home those teeny tiny black dots are invisible!! Who OK'd this during the design stages?! To help this I've added tape to the knobs. Overall I am happy with the DistX. It does what I thought it would and I see it being on my board for a long time to come.

Killer pedal

By Harley Brassfield

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DISTX Tube High Gain Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I love this thing. I'm poor as dirt so I'm using it as a preamp to a solid state amplifier and it works great. Gives you a good tube sound. I would suggest replacing the tube. I put an Electro Harmonix 12ax7 in it and it sounds WAY better than the original tube. I recommend this pedal 100%.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DISTX Tube High Gain Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I plugged this into a solid state amp and used the clean channel and achieved a warmer tone with the 12AX7 built into the pedal. I like the ISF (Infinite Shape Feature) knob, it completely changes the feel. Great pedal for drop D, drop C tuning.

    Using on a bass

    By Michael

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DISTX Tube High Gain Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I'm using this on a Schechter Stiletto 4-string. The first song I cranked out was a Type O Negative song "Too Late/Frozen". This little pedal is a brick, it feels sturdy, with one tube. It's pretty simple: one in, two outs (one to effects/amp and another to mixer) The review for the 'mystery' ISF knob is true to a 'T'. It's true bypass, and it sounds better with a longer warm-up. It's a very beautiful distortion pedal on my bass very bright and warm.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DISTX Tube High Gain Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Bought this based on the reviews and the Blackstar marketing ads. I really thought with technology being what it is today that I could hopefully get a decent metal sound out of this pedal. Well, the sound that came out definitely wasn't the one in MY head. It was just "blah."
I will say that it did produce the nice, warm sustain that is indicative of a tube amp, but it just did not get anywhere near what I would expect from a self proclaimed "filth machine." I kept waiting and playing thinking maybe it had to warm up before the heavy gain would kick in, but like Nikko below stated, it just never got any better.
Playing a Jackson Dinky with EMG 81/85s, I ran this into a Danelectro Fish and Chips EQ pedal, then into a Line 6 Spider IV 150 clean and just did not get anything close to the "screaming leads" detailed here.
I then swapped the Line 6 for a SS Marshall G80RCD and while it sounded clearer with the dry effect and reverb it still wasn't impressive at all. I even ran it through my PA and still nada.
I may order a new tube for it and see if that helps. If not, this thing is going back. Shame, but the Zoom G1Xon I ordered at the same time kicks this things butt all over the place and at 1/3 of the price to boot. If I would have had to guess prior to using both of these products I would have sworn it would be the other way around.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DISTX Tube High Gain Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I just added the HT Series HT-DISTX Tube High Gain Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal to my pedal board and I like it's versatility in going from a nice, punchy overdriven sound to high gain crunch and everything in between. It does take of some extra real estate, but in my opinion, that's worth the space. The 12AX7 tube that drives the unit gives it a nice organic type of drive to it.

Having the ability to shape the tone is another real plus on the unit. You can dial in just the right amount of highs and lows to get that sound that is just right for your ears. I'll continue experimenting with it as I really like what I have heard so far. Good job,HT...

I Like it because it does what I want it to do, it sounds good, it's built like a tank, and it makes my Bugera V5 into a new Amp. I wouldn't have bought it at full price not saying that it isn't worth it but I'm just cheap. I was looking at it on an earlier date but didn't want to throw out that kind of scratch for it but seen it on GC's Deal of the day for a price that I couldn't pass up and I am glad that I did.
