i wish I could do 4 and a half

By Zane Smothermon

from WA

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I rated it a five because I it is closer to 5 than 4 stars but I believe it earns a respectable 4 and a half. I will start out by saying it is hard to find a low watt tube amp so I was naturaly drawn to this amp. I needed a good practice amp and I hate emulation amps like the line 6 spider. So on to the specifics it has a great gain channel that for its size it can reach big heights. I have never played a amp that does rock and old school metal any better for its price and size. However if you want a more modern metal sound or thrash tone you will most likely need a tube screamer not for the gain but to tighten up the low end for heavy palm muting. The clean channel is great for me but it is pretty limited the tone is very crisp and you won't have lack of clarity however if the natural clean of this amp is not in your style the lack of ability to change clean tone would frusterating. Its reverb is much better than most amp reverb and is actually able to be turned on be useful. As a practice and recording amp I love the lead tone and with a the ability to achieve many tones is exactly what I want in a practice amp. If you play stricly new styles of metal you want to look else where unless you plan on using a tube screamer (like I do) or have a guitar with active pickups. But overall great amp, great price and don't hesitate because im sure as blackstar gets bigger the prices will sky rocket because they are really onto something BIG.

Big things in small packages

By Casey Lockwood

from West Jordan, UT

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought this amp for bedroom practice, and I chose this one because it was the only one in it's class that had gain capable of metal stuff. That said, the gain channel is quite awesome, if not a little dark. There is loads of distortion, and one of the things I love most about this amp is that it cleans up SO nicely rolling off on the volume knob of the guitar. The clean channel is no Fender or Vox, but actually sounded much better than most people were saying. The tube dynamics were definately there. There is only one tone knob on the clean channel though, no bass, mid, treb. This amp is not loud enough to compete with drums. You could play small venues, like a small bar with a backing track perhaps, but for gigging, this is not your amp. HOWEVER, one nice thing is you can run the emulated output while having the speaker on at the same time. This means you could run the signal out to a PA system, then just use the amp as a monitor. Thats pretty sweet. Anyway, the amp has some awesome tones, huge range of versatility, and lots of useful features. I hear a speaker swap makes these things sound even better, but I am satisfied as it is. Perhaps in a year or so. Awesome amp. (8.5/10)

Like their ad says "the sound in your head"

By JIM BIERMANN

from St Louis MO

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I love this amp I purchased it a couple months ago after reading many reviews on several amps, listening to reviews on you tube and visiting shops and jamming on different gear. Having read reviews, I did swap out the speaker with a Warehouse Guitar Speaker(made in the USA) Veteran 30, their version of Celestion's Vintage 30, I had bought and used in my old amp(a Peavey VK112). I did check out the stock speaker before I swapped, just to hear out of the box. Sounded nice, but after the swap it was great. I later swapped out the stock EH 12AX7 for a Mullard 12AX7 and it went from great to AMAZING. I like to play blues, classic rock, 80's hair band, and every now and then like to thrash it up. This thing can do it all. The picking attack response is great on the gain channel. When I play the blues I like to set the gain at about 10 o'clock and use the volume on the guitar to easily control the distortion level along with picking attack. The distortion has depth to it that is easily controllable, thick, and aggressive yet articulated at the same time, even when pushed to max gain. I am saving my pennies for a NOS Mullard 12AT7 to try and coax a more creamy, bluesy tone from it. I play a BC Rich Mockingbird with Rockfield Mafia humbuckers(set up with coil splits) and a VERY nice Les Paul clone for the more bluesy stuff. The amp allows the true tonal differences in the guitars come out. I can't wait to get to borrow my uncle's semi hollow body Epiphone and my mother in law's Gibson Melody Maker with P90's. I HIGHLY recommend this amp. I have read reviews that did say once the stock speaker has some hours on it the tone gets MUCH better, I had this one and I knew it did wonders for the harsh Peavey I had for a minute. Maybe I will find a cheap empty 1X12 cab, stick the stock speaker in it and plug it in to break it in. Until then I will stick with my current upgrade. I will give another review when I finally get the Mullard NOS 12AT7. BUY the amp before they raise the price, this amp is a definite future classic. Rate before the minor upgrades 4, with the upgrades I would push for 6 or 7 stars....IT IS THAT AMAZING.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp delivers decent tone at bedroom levels. Don't get me wrong, it can get pretty loud for a 5W amp. It plays really well through a good set of headphones and runs pedals very well. The clean channel is a little warm for my taste, but that's a matter of preference. You can't get a good light crunch/breakup without pushing the tubes at a higher volumes. However, I feel there are better sounding/more versatile small tube amps on the market for just a little more money. This amp is great though if you're all about high gain riffing.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Have only been playing guitar (Fender Strat and Epiphone Acoustic) for about 4 years and recently decided to start taking "tone" seriously so I wanted a good tube amp for a starter. Previously had a modeling amp which was fine but I Wanted to simplify and get that warm tube tone at low volume. This amp delivers. I'm very happy with the sound. Also love the fact that, if needed, you can use the emulation feature through headphones or recording equipment (I use Presonis recording device). I now can't wait to introduce some pedals:effects to my set-up. The overdrive and reverb that this amp already produces without ideals sounds great though. Finally I am very impressed with the quality and workmanship. If I ever graduate to a bigger more powerful amp Blackstar will be first on my list. The only thing I would change about this amp is that the EQ functions are not available on the "Clean" channel (just one tone knob) but I don't know enough about tube amps to know if that's standard. Not a huge problem because I simply select the OD channel, turn the gain way down, and then I can use the EQ (Bass, Midrange, Treble) to dial in the tone I want.

This is THE amp to get if you want that tube sound in a small space. I have a peavey 6505+ but in my situation which is my room around neighbors i can only turn it up to one, which means i'm not pushing the tubes much,i was always wanting an amp with tubes that i can push but at bedroom or studio volumes, and i came across this amp, if you like that tube sound,But you are in a small space, GET THIS AMP.

      Outstanding Amp

      By Brian Wattenbarger

      from Tulsa, OK

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I?ve been solicited to make reviews from GC on about everything I?ve ever bought here but I?ve never been compelled enough to do one until now? I bought this amp as a backup to my Marshall JVM 50W Half stack, mainly for size/weight convenience carrying to practices. My biggest concern was if it was going to be loud enough to hang with our drummer. I?ve read enough reviews and heard enough demos to know that the tone of this thing is excellent so I wasn?t concerned about that. Check out Rob Chapman?s review on You Tube. Well I'm happy to say that this amp gets LOUD, certainly loud enough to me that I'm plugging my ears with the volume at 8 and is hangs with our drummer with ease. There's even enough headroom that I can kick a line booster in the effects loop (has to be post pre-amp) and get a nice additional volume boost for leads. It has killer tone. I just love it. What I am most impressed with though is the speaker emulated output. This is the best emulated output I have ever had, better than the emulation on my JVM. I find myself practicing at home running the emulated output through a small powered PA mixer and recording and leaving it in standby. That sound is huge. I?ll never have to mike this one up at a gig. The tone going direct to the board is just superb. The 12? speaker sounds great, and the amp is especially impressive running into my 1960A 4x12. The amp is also VERY well built. Not cheap at all, it?s sturdy as a bulldog. I am totally happy with this thing. Two thumbs up for sure.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This combo amp was my intro to tube amps after having only played solid state before. I fell in love with guitar all over again and this little amp is the perfect practice amp. I modified the amp a bit by switching out the speaker and tubes. The original tubes had a bit too much gain for my liking and even with the new tubes I never go past 12 o'clock. The amp has everything you would need for practice. MP3 jack, headphones jack, effects loop, and foot switch. The ISF feature gives a nice range of different types of gain. The amp can be quite powerful in bedroom settings or small gigs.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

First off I'd like to point out that this is a very solid and overall. I really enjoyed the tone and The overdrive channel. It gives a gnarly crunch. This was my first tube amp so I'm pretty satisfied overall with the tone. However, it leaves more to be desired in my opinion. It's pretty quiet, even for 5 W, but then again I should've expected that at the time of purchase. I was looking for a tube upgrade for my old Peavey TransTube and thought 15 - 20W would be excessive, but I was wrong. Since this was my fault for not considering it I'm not taking any stars off for that. What I WAS very disappointed with however, (that I didn't catch in the store) was the fact that the EQ only works for the overdrive channel. This might be a factory defect or something, but for me I would like the EQ to affect both channels. They do have the "Shape" knob on the clean channel, but it offers very limited tone control in my opinion. I feel as though I can get a much better tone on the OD channel with the gain turned way down, but if I'm using my OD as a clean channel, that defeats the purpose of having 2 channels in the first place doesn't it?

Overall this amp is great for anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive all-tube upgrade their home practice amp, as it provides a very nice tone, however for me it could improved by having a master EQ instead of single channel.

I had been looking for a low wattage tube amp for awhile and the search always seemed to come back to the Blackstar. For the price range, you will be hard pressed to find an amp that is as versatile as this amp. Very easy to use and has a wide range of sounds. If you are looking for great tone at a reasonable price, this is the amp. I really enjoy the simplicity. This amp will allow you to dial in the tone you are looking for either with its own features or using pedals. If you have been thinking about the Blackstar, just pull the trigger. You won't regret it one bit.

If you want a warm, well defined tube driven amp at a volume your neighbors won't complain about, the Blackstar HT-5R could be a great fit! It comes with a very sturdy (metal housing) foot pedal and is overall very well built. The tone spectrum is quite broad, you can get very clear American amp sounds to very heavy British distortion, it takes pedals very well, it surely packs a punch. I use it much more than my other much pricier amps just because of how versatile it is and the combination of volume/tube sound for practice. Well done Blackstar!!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Blackstar is quickly becoming one of my favorite names in amps. I own two now: this one, and the HT-1R, both incredible. If you don't need the effects loop, or the ability to quickly switch between clean and overdrive (foot switch), I highly recommend the HT-1R. However, if you need those things, and maybe need a little more volume for jam sessions, then you can't do better than this amp. Additionally it has a three band EQ (along with the "ISF" setting), and separate volume controls for the each channel. The sound is incredible, and there's enough power to drive an external cabinet. If you haven't tried a Blackstar amp, what are you waiting for?!

I play lead in my church's worship team for 200+ people, and play mostly hard rock in my own time. The clean channel is surprisingly lively with my PRS. The tone control is serviceable; you won't quite get Fender sparkle, but it sounds great pretty much round the dial. Plus the clean channel plays nice with the RP1000 I use on Sunday. I use the stellar emulated output right to the soundboard and use the power section as a monitor, and it sounds excellent.
The overdrive side, while not entirely tube-driven, loses none of the tube flavor. Easy to dial in all kinds of tones, thanks to the ISF knob. Roll ISF right and set the gain around 9:00 for some AC/DC crunch; juice it up for some old-school Metallica. With ISF to the left and gain around 2-3:00, I found the sweet spot for metalcore/hard rock (i.e. Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin). It's not quite nu-metal territory until you add an OD out front, but after that, my Ibanez was nailing those Skillet tones.
The stock Blackbird 50 (granted, without being broken in) I found to be good when loud, but just okay under moderate volume. Got a little harsh and brittle on the OD side, and a little bit spongy under higher gain. The clean channel also broke up in not a nice way. Found a Vintage 30 for cheap, and after the swap, along with a Tung-Sol in the preamp just because, most of the fizz was gone, and the drive channel is much smoother, punchier, more focused, dare I say eargasmic. Like an earlier reviewer said, this thing is worth about six or seven stars after that upgrade.

What a great AMP. After a few years without playing I just started getting back into it and I wanted an AMP to play at home (quietly) and as soon as I wear off the years of rust to start jamming with some friends. My ax is a Vintage Kramer Pacer and I play blues to hard rock to metal and the tones that I get out of this box are great. I tested a couple of AMPS but without a doubt this is the biggest BANG for the buck.

                    Little amp, BIG sound!

This amp is the best "Little" amp I have ever used. Now I can sit in my practice room/studio and have the Big tube amp sound, without pissing off the people next door. In my opinion, the HT-5R sounds like a high watt Marshall without all the volume. Don't get me wrong, this little amp can be loud. It reacts to string attack like any good tube amp should. Clean channel is better then I expected. I have a Dimarzio X2N in the bridge position on my Ibanez, so when using the overdrive channel I can go from country rock to 80's style rock by just rolling on the pickup volume. You can also adjust the amp to get a british rock sound. Great amp for the money. I can't wait to get another 12" speaker cab for it.
