I was really torn between choosing the HT-5R and the Hughes & Kettner 5W combo, finally settling with the Blackstar because MF had some restocks that were a great price. Unfortunately, when the Blackstar arrived, I found out my "restock" item had a faulty overdrive tube, and no matter what I did to it, I just couldn't get it sorted. I made the dreaded call to MF, but the CS rep immediately generated a replacement order and shipped out another amp express ground for my trouble.

Needless to say I was VERY PLEASED when the replacement arrived three days later. The 5R has a warm natural sound on the clean channel, and really crunchy overdrive. The 12" Celestion speaker provides more than enough volume for practicing at home or just jamming with some friends. The included footswitch was an added value bonus with the 5R, but it wouldn't engage the OD channel unless the OD button was depressed on the control panel on the top of the amp. After reading through the handbook I found that little tidbit of information. I thought it was strange at first, but it works just as the handbook says it should. Depress the OD button on the top of the amp first, then plug in your footswitch, and switch back and forth between clean and OD all night long.

I've never played through any professional gear, but this is the loudest amp I've ever used. It's surprisingly loud for a small combo and sounds especially good for the great "restock" price I paid.

Kudos to Blackstar for offering such a cool-looking, sturdily built, quality amp, and kudos to Musicians Friend for solving an issue and pleasing a customer.

I cant recommend the HT-5R combo so I returned it. Note: I normally buy most of my gear from MF but I didn't buy this amp from them. I figured the review would be helpful if you like your amp to sound good! The Blackstar HT-5R combo is housed in a very small cabinet & as a result it sounds small/boxy. I tried swapping out the speaker with a Jensen P12R alnico for a bigger sound only to find that the baffle isn't even cut in a circle for a full 12" speaker...the top 3" of the baffle is cut straight across making 3/4 of a circle like this (_) but upside down thus blocking/covering up the top 3" of the speaker! It looks like they just took the 10" combo cabinet and stuck a 12" speaker in it without modifying the baffle nor moving the emblem. Blackstar cut corners to save $$ but they didn't cut the right corner...a circle is round!!! IMO the amp would sound 100x better in a slightly bigger combo cabinet with a full circle cut out in the baffle! That being said, for the money, the amp sounds amazing through a separate 12" cabinet. My suggestion is to buy the HT-5RH head and separate HT-112 12" cabinet and you will be in tone heaven for less than six bills!!!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

If you want a warm, well defined tube driven amp at a volume your neighbors won't complain about, the Blackstar HT-5R could be a great fit! It comes with a very sturdy (metal housing) foot pedal and is overall very well built. The tone spectrum is quite broad, you can get very clear American amp sounds to very heavy British distortion, it takes pedals very well, it surely packs a punch. I use it much more than my other much pricier amps just because of how versatile it is and the combination of volume/tube sound for practice. Well done Blackstar!!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Blackstar is quickly becoming one of my favorite names in amps. I own two now: this one, and the HT-1R, both incredible. If you don't need the effects loop, or the ability to quickly switch between clean and overdrive (foot switch), I highly recommend the HT-1R. However, if you need those things, and maybe need a little more volume for jam sessions, then you can't do better than this amp. Additionally it has a three band EQ (along with the "ISF" setting), and separate volume controls for the each channel. The sound is incredible, and there's enough power to drive an external cabinet. If you haven't tried a Blackstar amp, what are you waiting for?!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This was my first Blackstar amp and I can confidently say it far exceeded my expectations. The number of features you get is fantastic. Normally you get a few of the features is has and sacrifice others. Nope, this one has it all (or at least more than others). This amp does not have much clean head room at anything past loud bedroom levels. But you can get great distortion from channel one and loads more gain from channel 2 at higher volumes. It's perfect for lower volumes. Now you could play a show with it, but it would almost have to be mic'd. I play in a 3 piece rock band and had the volume knobs near the limit, but I was still able to get enough volume. It can be done, but the 20 watt makes more sense for my purposes. I didn't find the sound to be weak or boxy like other reviewers. The Fender Blues Jr. sounds small to me. This sounded much larger. It's built to last, portable, sounds great. Just keep in mind 5 watts is really pushing if you want to gig with it, too.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Have only been playing guitar (Fender Strat and Epiphone Acoustic) for about 4 years and recently decided to start taking "tone" seriously so I wanted a good tube amp for a starter. Previously had a modeling amp which was fine but I Wanted to simplify and get that warm tube tone at low volume. This amp delivers. I'm very happy with the sound. Also love the fact that, if needed, you can use the emulation feature through headphones or recording equipment (I use Presonis recording device). I now can't wait to introduce some pedals:effects to my set-up. The overdrive and reverb that this amp already produces without ideals sounds great though. Finally I am very impressed with the quality and workmanship. If I ever graduate to a bigger more powerful amp Blackstar will be first on my list. The only thing I would change about this amp is that the EQ functions are not available on the "Clean" channel (just one tone knob) but I don't know enough about tube amps to know if that's standard. Not a huge problem because I simply select the OD channel, turn the gain way down, and then I can use the EQ (Bass, Midrange, Treble) to dial in the tone I want.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I play lead in my church's worship team for 200+ people, and play mostly hard rock in my own time. The clean channel is surprisingly lively with my PRS. The tone control is serviceable; you won't quite get Fender sparkle, but it sounds great pretty much round the dial. Plus the clean channel plays nice with the RP1000 I use on Sunday. I use the stellar emulated output right to the soundboard and use the power section as a monitor, and it sounds excellent.
The overdrive side, while not entirely tube-driven, loses none of the tube flavor. Easy to dial in all kinds of tones, thanks to the ISF knob. Roll ISF right and set the gain around 9:00 for some AC/DC crunch; juice it up for some old-school Metallica. With ISF to the left and gain around 2-3:00, I found the sweet spot for metalcore/hard rock (i.e. Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin). It's not quite nu-metal territory until you add an OD out front, but after that, my Ibanez was nailing those Skillet tones.
The stock Blackbird 50 (granted, without being broken in) I found to be good when loud, but just okay under moderate volume. Got a little harsh and brittle on the OD side, and a little bit spongy under higher gain. The clean channel also broke up in not a nice way. Found a Vintage 30 for cheap, and after the swap, along with a Tung-Sol in the preamp just because, most of the fizz was gone, and the drive channel is much smoother, punchier, more focused, dare I say eargasmic. Like an earlier reviewer said, this thing is worth about six or seven stars after that upgrade.

This amp delivers decent tone at bedroom levels. Don't get me wrong, it can get pretty loud for a 5W amp. It plays really well through a good set of headphones and runs pedals very well. The clean channel is a little warm for my taste, but that's a matter of preference. You can't get a good light crunch/breakup without pushing the tubes at a higher volumes. However, I feel there are better sounding/more versatile small tube amps on the market for just a little more money. This amp is great though if you're all about high gain riffing.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-5R Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Kind of puzzled by the negative reviews of this bad boy but to each his (or her) own I guess.

The Blackstar HT-5R to me is a fantastic little amp. It is solidly built and delivers tube warmth & punch that digital amps can't touch. It's simple layout allows for a versatile array of quality tones without slamming the user with option overload. There are lot of well-thought out features one doesn't usually find on affordable small tube amps such as the excellent emulated output and an FX loop.

The clean channel is very serviceable. It's not a mind-blowing Fendery clean but it is very clear and is very responsive to difference guitars and pickups. If you are a country guy, don't bother. If you like gain, keep reading.

The star here is the Overdrive channel. There is lots of gain on tap, plenty for most rockers and classic metallers. The tone is a little more rock than pure metal - the palm mutes are reasonably chunky but you won't get Pantera chug without a boost pedal. This is true for most high gain tube amps though, that's why so many bands and producers rely on Tubescreamers to tighten things up. I get a killer warm tone straight onto the amp at any gain level. After setting the gain anywhere above 5 and flicking on my TS-9 (set to zero gain and a just a slight level boost), this thing turns into a fire-breathing crunch machine! Tasty metal riffs abound.

The HT-5R is highly recommended for anyone looking for a punchy, rockin' amp for home use or in the studio.
