I've been using this amp for the better part of a year now, and I'm very pleased with it. I had always used a ~15 watt amp for practice at a very low volume with all manner of pedals (Fulltone, Lovepedal, Visual Sound, others) to give a little "grit" to the sound. But from a tone perspective, using a pedal just isn't the same as pushing a tube amp, and you can't push a 15 watt, or even a 5 watt, tube amp to overdrive at a volume that is reasonable for bedroom practice.

So, enter the Blackstar, which as far as I can tell is one of the only 1-watt options out there that also has reverb (plus other useful options like the direct line out), and is by far the most reasonably priced. So I took a chance, and I'm glad I did. Using the "clean" channel, I can push the gain to get a bit of grit when I dig in, but it doesn't saturate like an overdrive pedal tends to. Perfect. I can then use my EP Booster or my Open Road Pedal, or both, to add additional drive when needed. I use a 57 Strat reissue and one of the 1961 Epiphone Casino reissues, and both sound fantastic with this setting, and I can play along with a sequence or recording and sound good without being at an ear-splitting volume level.

Were I to suggest improvements, I'd say the reverb is only OK. It works and is sufficient, but I miss a real spring reverb (this one is digital). I'd also prefer a 10" speaker and an open back (or the option to have an open back) as the sound is a little "boxy." Also, 1 watt is still surprisingly loud, maybe 1/10th to 1/2 watt would be sufficient, or an attenuator to select this output if desired?

But realistically, all these changes would increase the price, and while they might be nice to have, they don't diminish the quality or functionality of this amp as is. I'm honestly surprised there aren't more options in this area as guitarists spend a huge amount of time playing at home and this really sounds better than any practice rig I've ever had. So kudos to Blackstar on the HT-1R. I definitely recommend it to any guitarist interested in having a great home/practice tone.

I tried this amp wanting a small practice/recording unit that was tube. Based on great reviews I ordered a floor unit at slighly reduced price. Out of the box it played sweetly for about 2 minutes before fading out. Music123 service being prompt and helpful sent me 2 new replacement tubes. It was relatively easy to carefully replace the tubes, cleaning to eliminate skin oils. It warmed up and sounded great...for about 5-6 min. Just before I was about to press the overdrive button to check it out further, it faded out... Seems this unit was defective. Sent it back and am going with a small solid state unit for now. Cabinet and hardware seem solid, but QC was lacking...

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-1R 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Blackstar is quickly becoming one of my favorite names in amps, and this little powerhouse is one of the main reasons. This 1 watt monster is as loud as many 5 watt amps, and the sound is incredibly sweet! The tube distortion is everything I'd hoped it'd be, and the clean channel is crisp and warm all at the same time! If you're looking for a practice amp, or something for the studio, this is the one.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-1R 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought this amp a few months in Cleveland. I consider perfect for use in studies and studios. Really does not have much volume but for my use is sufficient. I Often use with the headphone. Shall not use much the drive channel, rather adjust the gain. The drive channel sounds like a metal distortion and the clean channel with gain sounds like blues until hard rock. Very well built and sturdy. I recommend.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-1R 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I've had this amp for about a year, and still can't believe how great it sounds. I have many large (and significantly more expensive) amps, but this one is untouchable for playing while the kids are asleep. I have never liked playing with headphones, because other amps/effects processors sound so, well, solid-state and cold. Because you can get a great tube tone through the headphone jack, I'm not unhappy about playing while using it anymore. It's surprisingly loud in its standard operating mode, and sounds very warm overall.

The Absolute Perfect Bedroom Practice/Recording Amp.

      By Joey

      from San Diego, CA

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-1R 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

If you're looking for a sweet sounding tube amp with sparkling cleans and loads of saturation but at bedroom levels, then this amp is for you. The clean channel is great, and it stays nice and clean up until about halfway on the gain knob, even with active pickups. You can get up to an AC/DC amount of breakup on the clean channel. The clean channel is great if you want to plug in your stomp boxes, because it takes all of them very well. The overdrive channel can go from smooth gain into metal territory, and it's nice, warm, and fat sounding. The emulated output/headphone jack sounds AMAZING!! It's great for recording and playing late at night. I don't have a single complaint for this amp, it's just perfect.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-1R 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Every semi serious guitar player needs one of these. Seasoned pro to motivated beginner. We all want that big pushed tube tone but most of us are ever really in a position to obtain it even for 15 to 20 waters (even 5 watts, to really push the power section it has to be LOUDD!!)...till now.

I love this amp, and really surprised by the clean tones this amp can produce. The 2 best settings are gain mid way and volume max, verb max and ISF a notch or three to the left with my Grestsch 6117T, sweet and clean, earthy and organic loud enough to really fill the room and tons of controlled feedback if you get up on the thing. Or, reverse the volume and gain , move the isf a bit towards right of center and plug in my Gibson P-90 gold top...sweet and mean based on pick attack alone...

I'm not a high gain guy anymore, but this amp does it better than most, and you can easily get real power tube saturation without attenuation or other ticks,

My only real gripe is the reverb is very limited, I like the option to go nutso surf if I want to, on max its nowhere close.

IMO this a perfect starter amp that could NEVER be outgrown, sure needs will call for larger amps and such down the road, but they wont "replace" this little gem. They are also very fairly priced, especially on sales, I got mine here at MF as a SDOTD with a free Digitech RP70 (probably wont ever use it) for a steal....man I wish I had a setup like that 30 years ago...

      Bottom line, I LOVE it!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-1R 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Great little practice amp, provides a variety of tonal options even at lower volumes. My favorite amp is my Mesa Express 5:50 but its just too loud sometimes, even on the 5w setting. Also it is fairly bulky and heavy for a 1x12 combo. The Blackstar is so easy to carry around if you travel much and don't need a lot of volume.

This amp has me sold on blackstar amazing lil amp love it. It's perfect for home practice. I opened it up to put some high quality tubes in because I figured being made in china it would have cheep china made tubes but I was wrong it has a electro harmonix 12au7 in the power section and a tung sol 12ax7 in preamp and the internal board seems to be of high quality I am very impressed. The only thing that could have made this amp better is a footswitch to change between channels.

          Outstanding practice amp

          By Drew Walborn

          from Louisville, KY

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-1R 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp produces a beautiful and wide range of tones, from minimum to maximum volume. All knobs create a noticeable change throughout their "sweep". The amp and speaker are a little weak for much more than practice/recording, however, it does have a "speaker out" jack. I currently live in a barracks room that is about the size of a double dorm room and this amp provides more than sufficient sound. The headphone jack has a solid connection and produces the same quality sound into headphones. Construction is top notch and all external knobs/switches feel sturdy and well secured. I am so pleased with this amp that I have ordered a few of Blackstars pedals. Simply put, I would buy this amp again and will highly recommend Blackstar to anyone in the market.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-1R 1W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought this amp after i found out that its what Gus G used on OZZYS SCREAM album (he used more powerfull stacks). It just ripped my head off,ive never been more impressed with an amp sound,i had to get one right away. When i got it home i was in love with it right away,it sounds great with the four guitars ive tryed it with,an American strat c/w a Tone Zone S in the bridge position,Ibannez RG550 c/w active EMG 85,81,Gibson SG faded cherry that came with stock P90s,and my 1996 Gibson Les Paul standard cherry s/b. with PAFs.Ive been playing for about 35yrs and currently own a Marshall JCM800 50W H/C,JCM900 100W daul rev,Marshall HG40w combo,Fender 40w Hot Rod,(Orange 20w Tiny Terror c/mating cab dont buy). And have owned many other guitar and amps, but i truley wish they had Blackstar amps back in the day,if your a skeptic get your yourself to a store that carrys em.It also has a dedicated ipod unput for jamming with your fav songs on ipod.I thought at first that it was not going to be that good but i was pleasently surprised to hear how great the feature was.The music sounds like it has its own speaker, and there is beautiful seperation between your guitar and the ipod.Even thought it has a small speaker i was shocked at the characterists i was and still hear everyday,Now im not saying it sounds like a largs cab,but it mimics almost what a much larger speaker cab sounds like, very hard to explain but very real in my ears when i play. And it is built to be able to run other cabinets,it has a 4-16 ohm output.I plugged it in to my Marshall 1960A cab,it rocked out.And it is very well built, with big steel knobs and easy layout. One thing i found different is that it only has 1 on/off switch. There is no STANDBY switch, just on and just off,it makes abit of a thud when turning off,but i spoke to a couple ppl and they say its allright(maybe cause of low wattage?).The dirty channel is the best ive ever herd, there will be no need for a distortion pedal,it reacts like a high powered tube amp cranked on 11 with that beautiful warmth we all crave,it more like overdrive than distortion but at the same time it has lots of dirt.Listen too (OZZYS,SCREAM CD)...(The clean channel is also very warm and clear (way better than any Marshall clean channel ive ever tryed, thats why i own the Fender Hodrod if you read me)But after all this great news, one must remeber its a 1W amp,its great for practice and recording(also has a headphone/direct record out).So dont show up to band practice with it.If i ever lost it i would buy a couple of them. Its the best amp ive ever played through. The only drawback is that they seem to be a little under represented in Canada were i live(Toronto). But im sure they will grow and you can order online and listen on utube. But its a tube amp (with a 6L6/12ax7 I think ).Its a great price for what you get,Spend your money on equipment that does one thing and one thing well. Then you wont have to buy the same thing again twice.Buy it!
