If you're looking for a sweet sounding tube amp with sparkling cleans and loads of saturation but at bedroom levels, then this amp is for you. The clean channel is great, and it stays nice and clean up until about halfway on the gain knob, even with active pickups. You can get up to an AC/DC amount of breakup on the clean channel. The clean channel is great if you want to plug in your stomp boxes, because it takes all of them very well. The overdrive channel can go from smooth gain into metal territory, and it's nice, warm, and fat sounding. The emulated output/headphone jack sounds AMAZING!! It's great for recording and playing late at night. I don't have a single complaint for this amp, it's just perfect.
This amp produces a beautiful and wide range of tones, from minimum to maximum volume. All knobs create a noticeable change throughout their "sweep". The amp and speaker are a little weak for much more than practice/recording, however, it does have a "speaker out" jack. I currently live in a barracks room that is about the size of a double dorm room and this amp provides more than sufficient sound. The headphone jack has a solid connection and produces the same quality sound into headphones. Construction is top notch and all external knobs/switches feel sturdy and well secured. I am so pleased with this amp that I have ordered a few of Blackstars pedals. Simply put, I would buy this amp again and will highly recommend Blackstar to anyone in the market.
For clean, this amp has hardly any volume at all. If your in a little room that's very quiet, it would probably be ok. When you add some distortion affects then you can get some volume out of it. 1 watt doesn't sound like much and its not. For the small size of this and only 1 watt, I think this amp is overpriced for what it is.
I got this little gem about a week ago to replace a Marshall MG250DFX as my home practice box. It is definitely a space saver in comparison and the sound is great. When playing clean your volume will not be great but you can hear it OK. The volume can kick up quite a bit when going for the overdrive on this. It's got a nice tube sound and better tone than the Marshall could give me. Plus I can get that tone at a low volume which is great for practicing when my wife is home. My only wish is that it had the capability of addding a footswitch for clean/dirty switching but that's just a minor irritant. Not a gig amp - I have a Fender DeVille for that - but a great practice/composing amp. Highly reccommend it!
Why aren't there more reviews of this amazing amp? My only thought is that users are too busy playing this thing to write a review. This is the first review I have ever written about anything on the internet, but this amp has inspired me to spread the good news of AMAZING tones at low volumes, plus, it has a headphone jack (which my wife says is her favorite feature - more a reflection of my playing than of this amp). No you cannot gig with it, but if you are practicing (I practice 99% more than I gig - and you probably should too) - this amp is incredible. Just a few knobs to turn but you can get insane tones out of this thing. Everything from a fender deluxe-ish sound to a Marshall like sound, great cleans, sick overdriven tones, and everything in between. I don't annoy the neighbors, I have a happy wife, and I can't stop using this sweet amp. I have had it for almost a year I think and I hardly play through anything else when I am at home. Plus it records well. I have had no problems with it over the past year, it has a great construction with a comfortable leather handle that is nice when I am carrying it around for travel, and sounds boss in a small room in spite of the small speaker.
You have to be clear about for what you will need this amp for. If you need power and volume try something bigger, this one can soun loud, but its mainly a practice/recording amp, band playing it's not its purpose. Cleans are great, OD is great, and Reverb is great also, very easy to use. You get Heaphones Output and also Record Output. And a Line Input, that is very useful. Quality is great, sound is great. If you're looking for a small portable amp, with real Tubes, this one is it. I had a Roland Micro Cube, and this one is at another level, well, it should, you're paying twice the price, but this is a more professional practice amp. The Roland Micro Cube is good at what it does, but I am very happy that I changed to this amp.
I had my HT1-R for about a year now, and had a good chance to compare with other amps too.It is almost loud enough for band practice[but you could just line out to a slave or a P.A system].You can fine tune the gain much better than most amps using the gain and ISF control.Sounds great with single coils or humbuckers.Everything from spanking clean, blackface sizzle and chirp, to full rich shred. I have used this for recording from the line out and this works really well also.Reverb is O.K and well worth the extra few dollars. Don't be fooled by the 1 watt output,or the price, this is a seriously good, and very useful little amp, which will upstage some much more expensive tube amps.I've just sold a Mesa Boogie studio calibre because this is better ! It does clean/crunch way better than my '66 super reverb !.My texas special strat just sizzles through this .I tryed the 5 watt model but I thought this sounded better.Needs a few hours use before it sounds its best.
Blackstar has already proven that they are a great amp company. This is the perfect amp for playing at home, in the studio, recording or just messing around anywhere. The HT-5 was already a hit, and now the HT-1R is also huge...but in a small package! Don't let the size fool you, this amp sounds huge!! Absolutely ENORMOUS sounding for its size. I love this amp. Great reverb, clean tones and awesome dirty channel. All tube, ECC82 and ECC83, and you get all the power you need from an amp soooo small. Simple, 4 knobs, simple is better. Sounds great!!
