Huge tube tone and wide-range flexibility.

The 45W Blackstar Series One S1-45 tube guitar combo amp delivers high-gain performance with a level of tonal refinement found previously only in the very best boutique and vintage amps. By switching both preamplifier and power amplifier parameters, the 2x12 S1-45 combo delivers both Class A style tones with a bell-like ring and classic push-pull crunch depending on the mode selected. The Infinite Shape Feature (ISF) control removes the limitations of traditional designs allowing you to tune the tone to exactly the sound you are looking for. Dynamic Power Reduction (DPR) can reduce the power down to 4-1/2W and MIDI switching and a series effects loop make this the ultimate pro's combo. The S1-45 guitar amp's Clean Channel offers a no-compromise design, by featuring Bright and Warm modes. Each mode actually reconfigures the pre-amplifier voicing and power amplifier damping to reproduce either ringing Class A performance in the Bright mode, or crunchy Class AB tones in the Warm setting.Blackstar also paid careful attention to the S1-45 combo amp's overdrive levels. Crunch mode covers the widest range of crunch gain levels from just on the edge clean break-up, to crushing modern rhythm tones. Super Crunch mode alters both gain levels and tonal shaping for maximum crunch flexibility. The overdrive modes are characterized by a tone which is high in gain, but lacks any of the detached top-end often found in many similar designs. This is a result of unique preamplifier and power amplifier shaping, which cleans up the overdrives beautifully as the guitar volume is reduced. But even at the most extreme settings, the overdrive channels remain natural sounding. The ISF control is unique to Blackstar Amplification and represents a major step forward in its tone-shaping flexibility. This fully interactive control allows you to infinitely adjust the response of the tone control network between British and American voicings. This results in an infinite number of alternative tone choices. Completing the tonal feature set is the DPR system. DPR reduces the power of the output stage from full power (45W) down to 10% (4.5W) and any power output in between. This means that the full tonal depth of the EL34 power amplifier can be enjoyed at any volume, making the S1-45 ideal for recording, smaller gigs and even home practice use. Working in conjunction with the power amplifier voltages, this method of power reduction suffers none of the loss in tone of other power reduction systems. The tonal flexibility of the S1-45 is augmented by full MIDI implementation of the main channel and mode switching functions. Used in conjunction with outboard gear such as multi-effects units, MIDI allows a whole new level of creative performance to be explored.

  • Very Impressive!!

As reviewed by Jeff Wilson on 9/30/2010

Impressive I recently purchased this amplifier brand new and had it shipped to me. Since the stores in my area did not carry this item as regular stock, I had to order it without first having the benefit of playing through it. I don?t like to do that, but I had read enough about the amplifier that I was fairly certain it was the right amp for me. Besides, I could always return it if I didn?t like it?? When the amp arrived, I plugged in and used the Quick Settings card to dial in some recommended settings. When I powered up the amp, I noticed no noise or hum. This is very unusual in my home because all of my amplifiers pick up electrical noise and interference from other devices and lighting. When I turned the volume and gain up, I could hear a very faint hiss, but it was barely audible. Well within my high standards for noise tolerance???. I tried out the amp with my stock Les Paul Custom (just guitar & amp, no pedals). First I went through both recommended clean settings and was surprised at the warm, yet crisp and shimmery quality of the clean on the ?Warm? setting. I had read reviews that stated such, but nonetheless it exceeded my expectations. Adjusting the ISF changes the tonal characteristics, but I couldn?t decide which settings I liked better. I liked them all. When switching the clean channel over to the ?Bright? setting, I noticed a definite increase in ?brightness?, so the channel is accurately labeled. However, I like the sound of this setting when I dial back on the treble on my guitar. It?s unique and I like that about it??? The ?Crunch? channel delivers up the type of warm overdrive that I really like. I?m more partial to British overdrive tones, so I like the ISF control at full throttle to the right. Turning the ISF all the way to the left gives me tones similar to my Mesa Rect-O-Verb. I like that too, but prefer the warmth of the British setting??. Changing the Overdrive channel to ?Super Crunch? delivers up overdrive that is beyond what I would use. I won?t be using this setting; however for those of you who play metal you might find it just up your alley. I?ve read that metal players like to add a pedal in front of this channel because it doesn?t offer enough gain. Hard for me to imagine that being necessary, but then I can?t say for sure since it?s not the genre of music I play???.. Another great feature this amp has, and a big factor in me getting it, is the DPR (Dynamic Power Reduction) control. And low and behold, it works just like it?s supposed too. I love this feature!!!....... I?ve been playing guitar and bass semi professionally for more than 20 years. I have rooms full of quality gear. This is my first time purchasing a Blackstar amplifier and I must say that I am very impressed with it. It seems to be a quality built product and I like that the controls are intuitively laid out. It looks good too. Blackstar has a real winner here.
