I purchased this amp used (but it still had hang tags on it) @ Guitar Center Arlington on 4-16-11 as a replacement for my HotRod Deluxe as it has been gigged constantly for many years and is kinda getting fragile, and also just too loud for Sunday mornings. I am truly impressed with this unit! I play an American Special Telecaster (with Texas Special Tele pickups) and a SRV Strat. Effect wise, I do not run much, just either a Digitech Hardwire series Tube Overdrive, my trusty TS-9, or my Diaz Texas Squareface, and a EH Small Stone Phaser (Waylonizer). This amp is a godsend. It is clean as can be, perfect for what I do (playing western gospel music) and sounds like a dream mic'd up. The only down side is not standby switch.
Lets face the facts were not all rock stars or millionaires right? So if you live an apartment or god forbid at home with the folks still this is a good amp to have. So lets start with the up side, it has a 3 band eq, volume control, 3w/5w switch. The down side for me is that it simply does not have and effects loop or gain control. But here's the deal for me the clean doesn't break up until around 7 on the vol. So it is easy to get a clean tone out this amp at a decent volume and the speaker is very nice a smooth tone that leans towards the bass end. When you put an OD pedal in front of this little guy he kranks out some sweet sounds and in my opinion kids if you can't get a good sound out of a standard eq and a few pedals somethings wrong. Get a good OD & Delay, sit down and start having a blast. I bought this amp and I got no regrets. P.S if you remove the logo on the front this one hot looking amp
Okay, I'm sick of every single piece of gear on gc.com having a 5-star rating. When I saw one for THIS AMP, I put my foot down. No, I don't own this amp and never would. I played it once for about three minutes and that was all the time it took to realize 1) it sounded like wet trash 2) any features or controls it had were entirely useless 3) " ...The open back tuned design and (blue frame) Blackheart model 1216A Speaker by Eminence is the fruit of extensive research involving Crate and Eminence ..." YEAH RIGHT!! Seriously, let's be legit in our reviews please. This amp is a 5-Watt box which may or may not emit noise from time to time.
A friend of mine recomended this amp to me and I am amazed... I needed a small amp with heart and a bit of byte for my studio that is not too loud and affordable. This little Giant fits the bill. It even sounds great with running acoustic guitar through it. I added the Bitmo 10-nuator so that I can turn it up more without blasting everybody away :) Anyway, great sound, solid design, great price!
5w class A tube amp at a great price! Everything the amp does have is great... a 3 band eq, volume control, 3w 5w switch etc. The tone is awesome when pushed with a tube screamer, very deep and powerful distortion. Leagues better than any distortion pedal could ever accomplish. The clean tone, although hard to keep clean is decent. The only downfall is the lack of features. No master volume= difficult to keep clean. No effects loop, no standby mode, no gain control. To answer common questions: 1. Yes its loud but can be used in an apartment, I do. 2. No it can't be used with a drummer imo. 3. Can it reach metal distortion, yes but not the usual tones associated with heavy metal but still really good. 4. Clean at loud volumes. No way!
