Best tom mic I have ever used

By Brian Pomp

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Beyerdynamic M 201 TG Dynamic Directional Microphone:

I've used every mic recommended for toms and I was in Portland a few weeks ago at the Roseland Ballroom and they had 201's as their house mics and I've never heard toms more clearly. Usually between gating and EQing, toms are such a chore to get sounding the way you want them. With these mics, I didn't have to do any work. I plan on buying four of them for my own mic collection.

Comments about Beyerdynamic M 201 TG Dynamic Directional Microphone:

Let me preface this review by saying that I purchased this mic for a very specific application, which it performs wonderfully for - micing nylon string guitar for live performances. I haven't had the opportunity to fully experiment with it in other settings, but for nylon string guitar it absolutely shines. Classical guitars are very difficult instruments to amplify and retain an authentic tone. Whenever I've tried DI boxes with acoustic/electric models (even high-end Ramirez and Cordoba's) the tone has been utterly abysmal, and professional sound guys often don't understand the specific needs of these finicky instruments.

Keep in mind that classical guitar pieces are melodic across the entire frequency spectrum, so you can't approach the tone the way you would a more straight forward steel-string acoustic guitar. Also, I'm regularly playing large rooms during cocktail receptions where people are not sitting quietly listening to you play. They're walking around, talking and drinking, and often just a few feet away from me. Condenser mics would be the way to go in the studio, but are out of the question for this setting. Although many industry-standard dynamic mics have been considerably better than going direct-in, they've still left me with a thin tone even after hours of meticulous parametric EQ-ing my Bose L1 (Great system btw). On top of that, when close-micing nylon strings you need quite a bit more input gain than you would for a steel-string, and in the midst of loud audiences you have to push it to levels that would be completely ridiculous in any other circumstance. I've had to run my Bose practically wide open just to get the guitar audible. With a steel string acoustic it'd be clipping and feeding back all over the place, but the nylon string is a totally different animal. I'm sharing all this information just to underline what a specific task I've given the Beyer, and to explain how amazingly it's performed at it.
