Beyerdynamic is one of few microphone manufacturers worldwide that still produce ribbon microphones. The M 160 dynamic double ribbon mic brings you the sonic characteristics of classic ribbon mics with a modern twist. Thanks to the double-ribbon design, the M 160 has an ultra-fast transient response, which gives you superior detail while maintaining the smooth highs that ribbons are famous for. The M 160 is an outstanding microphone that's very effective for all types of remote and in-studio vocal reproduction. In the recording studio, the M 160 is recommended for miking string instruments such as violins, violas, cellos and for pianos, saxophones as well as for hi-hat and toms. It can effectively handle sound sources from pianissimo to mezzo forte. The non-glare black surface of the M 160 and its small dimensions allow unobtrusive use in TV or film studios.

When used in conjunction with the Beyerdynamic M 130 figure-8, double ribbon mic, the M 160's matched sound and hypercardioid polar pattern (side attenuation of 25dB at 110 degrees) makes it an ideal "mid" mic for recording in stereo with the M-S (Mid-Side) technique.

Comments about Beyerdynamic M 160 Dynamic Double Ribbon Microphone:

This mic reminds me of a vintage low-fi sound on drums anyway. Its like a condenser without the added highs. I did not try it on guitars. This would not be my first or even third choice, but I would like to keep this one around. There is something cool about this mic, and if I had a better live room I think I would have gotten better results.

Not a typical ribbon sound

Comments about Beyerdynamic M 160 Dynamic Double Ribbon Microphone:

Just read the above. It's another valuable brush for painting the sonic picture.
Sound is so subjective...that's my disclaimer for this review.
First, the gear: Rivera Knucklehead Tre into and EVM 12L with Blackout loaded Jackson 7 string.
This mic udoubtedly is hyped in the 2k-4k region, but definitely not in an abrasive way. It really is great at providing the "meat" of your sound if you use lower treble settings like I do. It is one my favorite mics I have used on my cab. Has less proximity effect than the Peluso R-15 I have (which is an R121 clone). Very comparable to an SM7b with the mid boost engaged, but more natural. For typical speakers like the V30, and Classic Lead 80, may be a bit harsh and thin. Great mic on warmer speakers with lower mids.
Had the Rivera cranked. master on 7, preamp gain on 7. Mids on 3. No issues. Modern ribbons are troopers. In this amp, the mids matter just as much as the master for volume.
I give this a medium rating. It's pricey compared to other dynamics, but not so pricey considering how much reputable modern ribbon mics cost.

awesome awesome mic

Comments about Beyerdynamic M 160 Dynamic Double Ribbon Microphone:

I bought the m 160 to record some electric and nylon string guitar and this mic is it. It really excels at bringing something special to the table. It has a very accurate and natural sound which what I was gong for. No shrill highs or boxy sounding mids. It has a very smooth top end and sounds incredible if you find the sweet spot. I had it for three months and this one is definatly a keeper. The usual high quality standards that you can expect from Beyerdynamic. Looking forward to record some more and use this with on different sound sources. Love Ribbons then you will love this classic M 160 !
