Great Mixing headphones

By Steven Uhde

from Maine

I own and use AKG K240's (lack LF) and Beyer Dynamics DT770's (exaggerate LF too much) to evaluate and compare mixes to my Event ASP8 monitors and needed an open/semi open headphone that is more accurate for mixing. I am very pleased with my purchase. The 880 pro's are much more accurate/neutral in the LF and overall much better choice for mixing than anything I've used to date. In my opinion you can't get a better headphone for mixing in this price point. They are very comfortable and don't clamp hard on your head causing fatigue, yet don't feel loose either. I don't recommend them (or any "open" type phones) for monitoring while recording/tracking as they are semi open and will bleed into your microphone while tracking things like vocals. Due to the 880's 250 ohm spec it is recommended to use a good headphone amplifier to get the most from them. I tried them with my Iphone and Laptop and they work ok, but could use a little more power/volume. Many recording interfaces headphone outputs may be similar. I use a headphone amp. These phones are also available in 32 ohm or 600 ohm versions. If you're using them without a headphone amp such as for casual listening on your home stereo, iphone/ipod or laptop phones output, I would recommend the 32 ohm version. (the specs vary between the different ohm rated versions as well)
