Comments about Beyerdynamic Custom STUDIO Headphones:

I love beyerdynamic's gear. I've had a pair of DT770's and it was time for a new pair. These are kind of under the radar, but my music friends kept recommending I try them. I'm really glad I gave them a listen. They were way better than anything in this price ranger. Better lows and lots of detail.\

Comments about Beyerdynamic Custom STUDIO Headphones:

These headphones are big and comfortable. I use them for recreational listening while I'm at work at a desk job. Because I work in a cube farm, I'm inundated with a lot of noise; conversations, cell phones, and so on. This all breaks my conversation, and is supremely annoying besides. These headphones do an excellent job of passively blocking external noise.

So, the sound? Very good. Excellent detail. The bass tuning feature is quite interesting; basically, you're changing the porting of the back side of the driver's enclosure, which affects the bass response of the driver. All closed, you have reduced bass; one open, you have neutral bass; two open, you have boosted bass; and all the way open, you have exaggerated, booming bass. I've found that the "neutral bass" setting has proper deep bass response, but sounds a little boosted in the mid-bass; I've found that "boosted bass" either masks that effect, or reduces the mid-bass, while not being too heavy-handed in the low bass, so that's the setting I use for recreational listening.

Compared to my other favorite headphone, the venerable Sony MDR-7506, these have a warmer bottom end, and a less pronounced upper-mid. For live sound use, and recording, I prefer the mid-forward sound of the 7506 -- it reveals problems. The 7506 is great for casual listening, too, but I find the Beyers to have a richer sound, and they're more comfortable for me for long periods of listening.

I also have Beyer's DT-880 PRO. Similar fit and comfort, but semi-open; they're not suitable for an office environment (everyone would hear my music, and they wouldn't block outside noise). In a quiet environment, their supreme detail makes them a wonderful headphone for critical listening -- whether for recording purposes or recreational listening. The Custom Studio offer a similar sound quality in a closed-back headphone. I found the DT-770 to be too muddy in the mid-bass. The Custom Studio succeeds where those fall short.

Comments about Beyerdynamic Custom STUDIO Headphones:

I have been looking for a good pair of headphones for mixing, just flat and accurate. These are nice because you can adjust the bass to estimate what it'll sound like on bass-heavy systems or bass-less earbuds. Unfortunately, I just can't wear them without pretty pronounced discomfort. The pressure on the sides of my head near my ears is just too much, so I'm returning them. It may be different for other users but for me it was a deal-breaker. Good luck finding something that works right for you!
