Works great as a splitter box DI - to the board and to the amp for bass. The presets on this are very well voiced and incredibly useful. Your choice of tube or discrete preamplification. The multi setting (tube + limiter) is fabulously full, warm and dimensional with passive bass pickups: you can get a tighter, cleaner sound with the op amp or keyboard setting if you wanted, or straight up neutral. Records very well direct and its pleasantly low noise, Acoustic guitar and vocals - dynamic or conderser mics are well served. haven't yet tried it on drums. It should have an on off switch, but I'll still give it top marks for such musicality and utility at such a low price.

If you are running your harp through a solid state amp, you need to try this.
First of all, this machine comes equipped with chicken head knobs! How cool is that? The knob that allows you to select different settings of "warmth" is worthy.

I bought this as a preamp to warm up the sound of my harp going into a solid state amp. It does a great job at that.

If you plan to try switching out tubes on this unit, it's more difficult than the ART preamp. the tube is wearing some kind of little hat with two screws. I need to run it by a knowledgeable friend to see what's going on there. And I will re-post with instructions after we figure it out.

Still, the tube that comes with this does a really nice job of giving your harp mike a cool distorted harmonica tone. You will find that most other reviews recommend the "valve" setting. That's true. I'm finding that is true as well. I would also add that the "Bypass" setting is a real plus. If you put the chicken head on that setting, it really is as if you are bypassing the preamp.

The different settings on the modeling switch really do make a difference, so I would invite you to experiment with them
I could not believe how heavy the package was when it arrived I will need to repost after a few months regarding reliability..
So far I think it's great. There is no extra noise associated with the pre amp. It will make a solid state amp sound like a tube amp. If you are currently using a solid state amp for your harp, this pre amp can fix things up for you. Otherwise, draw your own conclusion.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

I purchased this product a couple of years ago as a mic preamp. The gain was very hot and noisy and I was warned by my sales rep that the unit would introduce noise to my system. Nevertheless I was wanting it test it out for a project. The gain was so hot that it only seem to only be practical as an overdriving preamp. Clean low noise sounds were very hard to dial in. Not practical for voice or acoustic guitar.....until I swapped out the 12Ax7 preamp tube that came with it for a JJ 5157. Wow what a difference. The JJ 5157 has a lower gain rating and is much less noisy than the type that it came with the unit. Now I can use the Ultragain MIC 200 as a real mic preamp, an accoutic guitar preamp, and di box and for any other purpose I could dream up. It is brand new to me and well worth the price for the value.

Bonus info: While trying to find the cause of the noise I actually removed the tube and powered the unit up. If you read the manual you find that some of the settings use the tube heavily and others by-pass the tube. The unit was able to be turn up to full power with very little noise (very little) and my acoustic guitar was playing throught the unit as long as I was not using the tube settings. The unit overall needs the tube to amplify the sound and operate fully as intended; yet the unit was playable and quiet without the tube. Some settings are by the tube to color sound. After 2 plus years the switches are still quiet without static while turning. I hope this helps.

Sincerely, Ed

MIC200 follow up thoughts and update

About Me Experienced

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

A few weeks later, I'm loving the MIC200 preamp even more. I'm intrigued by the Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster Classic Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal, which is basically the same except it's a stomp box pedal instead of a preamp. My MIC200 is the last pedal in my pedal chain before a noise gate. The noise gate was a big plus because of all the gain this preamp can muster, especially using single coil pickups. I'm now using a RCA 12AU7. It's a must to tube roll to find the best tube for YOUR tone. This device can create lots of even order harmonics, I suppose that's what is called the violin-y tone. It works well with the other pedals I have tried - an overdrive, a fuzz, a boost/equalizer, and a Mooer Woodverb. I use it with my electric and with my acoustic using a sound hole single coil pickup going into a Fender Blues Junior. It's versatile in that it can warm up the sound of my acoustic in a subtle way or take things into voodoo land of feedback bliss. With GC great return policy and customer service it's a no entertainer to try the MIC200 or the VT999. The MIC200 can be used for microphones and intruments. Don't buy this if you just want to turn the knobs to 10 and expect good tone. On the MIC 200 I find that the preamp mode knob is very subtle in that the mode switch varies the equalization, the amount of detail, the overtones and harmonics. It's handy when searching for a particular tone to have instant settings at your finger tips to fine tune.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

I bought the MIC200 to use as an instrument preamp/DI box for acoustic guitar. This little device can go from adding add warmth to full on overdrive. I tried a few different 12AX7 tubes. The stock Chinese tube is fine, but a 50s RCA breaks up a lot smoother. I use it for my electric guitar also. The Preamp mode switch works as intended giving a variety of presets as a starting points for degrees of warmth and equalization. Very nice for the price. I suppose the Behringer drive pedal that uses a 12AX7 would be similar, but in a more useful to performing pedal design.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

This is an update to my 6/21/2013 review......my thoughts on this little box has not changed, at all. As a DI or Mic Pre, you just can NOT go wrong with it for the price.

Over the years I have swapped the tube out for every model & make suggest on the net, and in the end went back to the 12AU7. Just the right amount of break up / "warmth", but clear as a bell at higher gain settings. Of them all this model was the quietest of them all.

I have a Tungsol in it now, the JJ was a close 2nd. I had a NOS GE that absolutely ROCKED this unit, but it & a RCA got broke while in their bubble wrap.

I am a Berry fan, always have been, always will be, even tho I have plenty of "better gear" that in many ways sounds better. But IMHO Berry outdid themselves when they designed this unit. I still use it almost every session somewhere....

This & a MXL V67G mic is all you will need to get started, even if your interface is the sound card on your laptop....really...

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

I've had several of these. For the money they are impossible to beat. Great quality mic pre. Easy to use. Super reliable. I toured with several of these mounted on a rack drawer for goosing our guitar and bass sound before the send to the console, so that we would have a top notch sound, night after night, regardless of what the FOH console situation was. I initially viewed these as great for live, but maybe not studio ready. A few years later, I was doing some recording at home and was getting the most blah sound out of the pres on the recording gear. I grabbed one of these because it was there and re did the takes with it as the mic pre, in front of the recording console and got a great result, something on par with what I've paid for studio time to get. I've used them for home recording ever since. Greatly improves mic signal quality at a very low price point. Well worth having.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

This unit does what it says it will do, but not precisely how it says. It is a pre-amp and it does amplify the signal. But, the OEM tube that comes with it is much too harsh with too much gain. The MIC200 is versatile in that it has a few presets that can be used to mold and round out the tone a bit during recording. It is quite different than using a mixer when recording, and those differences must be dealt with in various ways.
Now, I mentioned the OEM vacuum tube earlier. What I did with mine is replace the OEM tube (12AX7) with a high quality, extremely low noise 12AY7. The 12AY7 has about 1/2 the gain of the 12AX7 and this makes the output much cleaner, warmer and fuller. It allows for more control in the gain and output pots.
Over all, I would give this piece a rating of "Very Good" when used as intended. After all, this IS a very low cost unit and is not meant to be a piece professional gear. I use it at home in my make-shift studio and it does it's job well. I would not recommend putting the MIC200 toe to toe with truly professional recording gear. For the price....I'm happy.

The out-of-the-box sound was good but hard to control for me. With a change of the tube to a JJ Electronics 12AU7, I get easy control and a more useable range.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

I'll start with this... THIS IS MADE FOR AMATEURS!!! For the people who are plugging their mic directly into a cheap audio interface or even worse, directly into a computer... This thing will improve your sound 10 fold. BUT! I bought it to record my band's next album and I will say that it's not exactly Pro Studio grade quality. (Obviously.. for 50 bucks..) I picked mine up new on clearance for 10 bucks though so I don't regret it at all! Like I said, if you have an MBox Pro or Focusrite Interface already, this isn't going to help you... but if you're running thru a Lexicon Alpha or some other 50 dollar interface... this will help! As for build quality, this thing is rock solid. There's a tube hanging out in there so I wouldn't throw it around too much, but it's an all metal chassis and it looks and feel great! Lots of complaints about the knobs but to me they feel smooth and solid. All-in-all... it's 50 bucks to try to improve your sound. GO FOR IT!

when the tube went out, I thought it was broken, but I put a 5751 in there and it worked again and also sounds good. I left the thing that holds the tube in so tightly off so that I can change the tube more easily when needed. my vocals through the pa sound way better with this than without it. I also use mainly the valve setting, but some times the warm vocal setting as well
