I bought a Behringer mic-200 preamp a few years ago and it has proven to be a pretty versatile preamp. It's just a tiny bit edgier sounding than the Studio Projects VTB-1 preamp I have since purchased, but the VTB-1 costs about twice as much. For the price, the mic 200's sound is pretty good. For a first preamp you won't beat it. It definitely adds some warmth to your tracks. Pair this with a Behringer or Studio Projects large diaphragm condensor mic in the $100 range and for a $150 outlay you'll be creating some reasonably warm sounding vocal tracks. If you can afford to spend more, I'd go for the Studio Projects VTB-1, but for under $50, you'll be pleasantly surprised with this.

I can't believe so many people gave this product such a glowing review. Yes it does warm up the sound after all the crackling and poping and humming that won't stop. Can't even use it. It's so annoying to buy something that claims to take the hum out and then find out it only adds more and then the dial crackles evertime you turn it. Seem to be made with cheep components. I'm very disappointed in my purchase.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

I purchased this product a couple of years ago as a mic preamp. The gain was very hot and noisy and I was warned by my sales rep that the unit would introduce noise to my system. Nevertheless I was wanting it test it out for a project. The gain was so hot that it only seem to only be practical as an overdriving preamp. Clean low noise sounds were very hard to dial in. Not practical for voice or acoustic guitar.....until I swapped out the 12Ax7 preamp tube that came with it for a JJ 5157. Wow what a difference. The JJ 5157 has a lower gain rating and is much less noisy than the type that it came with the unit. Now I can use the Ultragain MIC 200 as a real mic preamp, an accoutic guitar preamp, and di box and for any other purpose I could dream up. It is brand new to me and well worth the price for the value.

Bonus info: While trying to find the cause of the noise I actually removed the tube and powered the unit up. If you read the manual you find that some of the settings use the tube heavily and others by-pass the tube. The unit was able to be turn up to full power with very little noise (very little) and my acoustic guitar was playing throught the unit as long as I was not using the tube settings. The unit overall needs the tube to amplify the sound and operate fully as intended; yet the unit was playable and quiet without the tube. Some settings are by the tube to color sound. After 2 plus years the switches are still quiet without static while turning. I hope this helps.

Sincerely, Ed

MIC200 follow up thoughts and update

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

A few weeks later, I'm loving the MIC200 preamp even more. I'm intrigued by the Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster Classic Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal, which is basically the same except it's a stomp box pedal instead of a preamp. My MIC200 is the last pedal in my pedal chain before a noise gate. The noise gate was a big plus because of all the gain this preamp can muster, especially using single coil pickups. I'm now using a RCA 12AU7. It's a must to tube roll to find the best tube for YOUR tone. This device can create lots of even order harmonics, I suppose that's what is called the violin-y tone. It works well with the other pedals I have tried - an overdrive, a fuzz, a boost/equalizer, and a Mooer Woodverb. I use it with my electric and with my acoustic using a sound hole single coil pickup going into a Fender Blues Junior. It's versatile in that it can warm up the sound of my acoustic in a subtle way or take things into voodoo land of feedback bliss. With GC great return policy and customer service it's a no entertainer to try the MIC200 or the VT999. The MIC200 can be used for microphones and intruments. Don't buy this if you just want to turn the knobs to 10 and expect good tone. On the MIC 200 I find that the preamp mode knob is very subtle in that the mode switch varies the equalization, the amount of detail, the overtones and harmonics. It's handy when searching for a particular tone to have instant settings at your finger tips to fine tune.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

I bought the MIC200 to use as an instrument preamp/DI box for acoustic guitar. This little device can go from adding add warmth to full on overdrive. I tried a few different 12AX7 tubes. The stock Chinese tube is fine, but a 50s RCA breaks up a lot smoother. I use it for my electric guitar also. The Preamp mode switch works as intended giving a variety of presets as a starting points for degrees of warmth and equalization. Very nice for the price. I suppose the Behringer drive pedal that uses a 12AX7 would be similar, but in a more useful to performing pedal design.

      Finally warm vocals!!!

      By Aaron Phillips

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

I'll start with this... THIS IS MADE FOR AMATEURS!!! For the people who are plugging their mic directly into a cheap audio interface or even worse, directly into a computer... This thing will improve your sound 10 fold. BUT! I bought it to record my band's next album and I will say that it's not exactly Pro Studio grade quality. (Obviously.. for 50 bucks..) I picked mine up new on clearance for 10 bucks though so I don't regret it at all! Like I said, if you have an MBox Pro or Focusrite Interface already, this isn't going to help you... but if you're running thru a Lexicon Alpha or some other 50 dollar interface... this will help! As for build quality, this thing is rock solid. There's a tube hanging out in there so I wouldn't throw it around too much, but it's an all metal chassis and it looks and feel great! Lots of complaints about the knobs but to me they feel smooth and solid. All-in-all... it's 50 bucks to try to improve your sound. GO FOR IT!

After my studio burnt this was one of the first things I replaced, I've used it to trash up punk vox, harmonica, snare drum,I use the bass limiter setting when tracking bass and the warmth setting on playback. at the price I've given it has Christmas presents.

      Sweeten Your Bass Rigg

      By EP

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

This preamp has been what the Dr. ordered for me. Even though it isn't highline equipment it gives a bass rig that extra focus and clarity. And if you keep your amp volume moderate and the preamp volume low, you crank the gain almost all the way and get that nice tube brake up.If you have 10 in speakers that are distorting when you're looking for clean bass just put it on the limiter setting and slap away. I'll admit that I use this less since I upgraded to higher power amps and better speaker cabs but when practicing and in small gigs I always carry it. Just in case I can't here the bass like I need to. This preamp makes your 200 watt amp sound like 500 watts and it does so cleanly. For $30-$40 you may as well put this in your bag and keep it with you. its value can't be beat. Also did very well in the studio. I did all the tone tweaking through my bass and this. Try this out if you have a weak amp or need a d.i. box, 'peace'

      For the price, a must.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

Well, people hate on Behringer, but why? I haven't had this little box for very long, and while it may be a bit underwhelming, for the price it is awesome. It has features that may be typical, but not for this price point- all the little buttons, ie the pad, phase, high pass, and phantom power, aren't fancy but are totally useful. None of the preamp voicings are drastic, but it's nice to have them. I've heard complaints of noise with this box but so far it's clean. One main issue is that this 'tube' is actually what they call a starved-plate design, where the tube is not actually running as much juice as a tube amp, so don't expect it to sound like a Bassman or Twin. I have heard that much better results can be had by replacing the stock tube with another 12AX7, and I will certainly be doing that. Bottom line- at the very least, this is a super cheap DI that will sound great on bass or guitar. It's not going to be a goto preamp for recording, necessarily, but for barebones home recording or just some coloration, it's a must have.

      Great Product!

      By Jason Cooper

      from Blue Creek, Ohio

Comments about Behringer MIC200 Tube ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

Let me start out with the only thing I didn't like about it. Behringer does not believe in on and off switches. This product does not have a sleep mode or nothing. Somebody tell Behringer that people in the USA like on and off switches on there audio products. Other than that.... This product does what It says it does... and for vocals it is great. BUY IT!
