A little elbow grease...

5 seconds after I plugged the unit in - I realized the tubes were crap. I ordered a pair of Ei 12AX7 Elite Gold for about $25 each, matched for low noise & microphonics, and the noise (hiss) was completely gone, and the warmth of these Telefunken imitations came shining through. I liked it so much, I bought 7 more - now all eight have the Ei 12AX7 Elite Gold upgrade, and I keep 8 tubes as spares. Buy the tubes, then buy these - I run these in the inserts of the 16 subs of my 2 Mackie 32.8 consoles - people constantly ask what the console is when hearing the projects, to get a sound like that they expect to hear names other than "Mackie" and "Behringer". These are now a staple of the studio - you can find the tubes at: www.tubedepot.com - Thanks Behringer, TubeDepot and Guitar Center for an unexpected discovery!

A introductory tube preamp, but it lacks warmth

A mic preamp that will fit your needs on a low budget. To be honest this preamp will not provide you with professional sounding tracks, but it will help you out if you don?t already have a nice mic preamp. The preamp does a good job of amplifying the signal but that is about it. The unit does not seem to provide any additional warmth. If you need a good guitar preamp this may be the item you need, but for vocals I would consider other alternatives.
