  • Great Testing Box with wth uncommon useful features ...Typical Behringer Build Quality

As reviewed by William Ebmeyer on 3/6/2012

First the good stuff. I have to say that this box does everything it does very well. And it has some connector sizes, like TT and 1/8th inch, that are not found on most cable testers. It can test for phantom power (a good idea before plugging in a Ribbon mic) and if shield has been grounded. Additionally it has an "installed testing mode" which will tell you if there is a short somewhere in the signal path. It can't of course tell you where the short is. When I find a testing box with that capability and I'll fire my tech! Lastly it has a tone generator that sends tone at 440hz and 1K plus it can send these tones at mic level, -10 and +4. I haven't put it on a scope to test the accuracy of the tones, so until that has been done I wouldn't use it as a tuner to align a tape machine. I found out about this from a friend I do large scale Live TV events with. Put not on a show...on his test bench...with gaff tape holding the battery cover on. The reason I gave it 4 stars is that its build quality is typically Behringer. I view all Behringer products as "Disposables". Like a crappy 50 cent lighter, you use it til it breaks and go buy another one and throw the broken one in the trash. Hopefully you've made your money back before that happens. It lacks speakon connectors and the belt clip looks a little dicey. My prime suspect for the gaff on my friend's battery panel is the belt clip. In short, no pun intended, when treated with care this is a good tester for Studio use. But if you intend on using it for live gigs buy two of them. Keep the spare in a foam lined case (preferably hard shell) and in a place where it won't suffer a fall or have something fall upon it. And at 22 bucks apiece, you can do that.

  • Love at first bad cable

As reviewed by Gregory More on 12/12/2012

Friday evening I assisted another sound guy. Just as we were starting sound check with the feature performers we discovered we were getting sound from the monitors but not the mains. I plugged the CT-100 into the monitor channel input on the amp and got a tone. I plugged the CT-100 into the main channel input on the amp and got nothing. The problem had to be somewhere in the amp or beyond towards the speakers. We looked at the amp settings (configuration and gain) which seemed OK so using the CT-100 test tone again I swapped the working monitor cable to the main output channel and got signal. The problem must be in the main speaker cable. I installed a replacement cable for the mains which worked fine. To confirm the problem I checked the bad speaker cable. The CT-100 indicated a bad intermittent problem (intermittent lit almost immediately) on the tip. I labeled both ends of the cable "bad tip." The CT-100 helped me find the problem, confirm the problem and then identify exactly what needed to be fixed. It did all this after I've owned it less than one week. And the speaker cables are robust cables that are less than a year old. I suspect a poor quality solder in one of the 1/4" plugs. Needless to say I am happy with the CT-100. I think the cable gods wanted to show off the CT-100 right away. I don't know why your store doesn't stock them. The test tone and intermittent features are great additions to the basic cable test function. Cons: The CT-100 does not have Speakon connections for testing Speakon cables.

I bought this because I had some old cables that would shut down my mixer. It works very well.
