  • Basslines P-Bass Lightnin' Rods Pickups

As reviewed by Chris Fox on 1/6/2012

I just purchased and installed Basslines P-Bass Lighting' Rods pickups. Installation was not quite as simple as the Basslines blurb suggests. I have a '76 P-Bass, and I will need to enlarge the stock wire channels in the body to make room for the 9-volt battery. Also, the pickup mounting screws do not fit in the pickup mounting tab holes. I can't reuse the original screws because the heads are too worn, I will need to drill out the pickup mounting tabs so the supplied screws work correctly. Finally, the rubber sleeves to provide mounting height adjustment are neither deep enough nor stiff enough; I will need to add some material so I can make the pickups sit at the recommended height below the strings. The wiring diagram was complete and accurate; no problem getting the setup completed, and I'm not very experienced with a soldering iron. Once installed, the pickups make a terrific difference. The other guys in the band are thrilled with the additional tone, smoothness and punch compared to the original (35 year old) Fender electronics. I'm able to turn my amp down and still have plenty of presence. I have not owned these long enough to report on reliability. The pickups do look just like the originals, but nobody will notice but me. Overall, no complaints at all. Very satisfied so far, and I would recommend these to someone else considering punching up the sound of an old P-Bass. If you're not handy with tools send the instrument to a reliable shop to get them installed, but you should like the difference in your sound.
