The Bartolini 9J1 4-String Jazz Bass Pickup Set features a hum-canceling dual in-line coil design. The 9J1 has a bright Neck tone and deep Bridge tone. The #1 windings yield much more "growl" from the Bridge pickup. They are very similar in tone to Bartolini's 94J 4 string pickups, just ever so slightly brighter at the bridge.
I have installed these pickups in a Warwick Corvette Standard fretless, replacing the factory single-coil MEC pickups. The Warwick has passive electronics: volume, balance, passive tone. I am very happy with the result. The reason I wanted to replace the MECs - they were VERY noisy (tons of hum) even with the balance centered. Installed the Barts with no other modifications to the bass, and no more noise! Sound is subjective, but to my ears, the Barts sound fantastic. Very balanced across the frequency spectrum. Rich lows, articulate mids and highs (but not harsh), and I get great fretless growl.
It was disappointing the web page was publishing this item as ?just arrived? but when I placed an order, it was under backlog situation. Please have someone to make sure that what is published is in fact true!!!! Regarding the product, it was very easy to install, of course, you need to have a soldering skills. I installed it on a 97? Mexican Fender Jazz Bass and WOW! The improvement of the sound was very noticeable.
