Comments about Backbeat Books The Tube Amp Book (Book/CD):
This book has a very nice history of many types of amp, so if you want a type of amp history lesson, this gives you a good foundation. Also, this book has a TON of schematics, which is great. Unfortunately, some of the schematic are photocopies Aspenۡs hand drawings, which are not as legible in places. So if you are trying to read a capacitor value on one of these hand drawn ones, you may be out of luck in places. It has a nice section about the different types of tubes, but with this book being written by Aspen Pitman of Groove Tubes, all the tubes it talks about are Groove Tubes. Groove Tubes has some of their own quirky naming conventions, like adding letters to a tube name to denote a specific factory in Russia ۡ IMO all this does is to add to confusion. And if you wanted info on tubes other than Groove Tubes (like various NOS or other current production tubes) forget about it. Also, I really wish this book had more analysis of amp circuits, but this is completely lacking. So, good on amp history, very good on schematics, and good on tube info if GT product specific is not a concern. But missing some important stuff if this book is to be considered great.
