I got this mic to start recording my acoustic intruments. I already had done some with a SM57 with great results, the Spark totally blew me away, it sounds so amazing. Granted I do not have a lot of experience with mics, but I do know what sounds good to my ear and this thing is so quiet, and sensitive it is just awesome. I have recorded guitar, cello, mandolin, percussion and some vocal through a POD UX2 and it sounds just like your sitting there live, excellent price, can't beat it!
First of all, this is the same mic as the standard Blue Spark, but only blue in color. Regardless, the quality of the mic is outstanding for the price. The sound has a little bit more low end than I would like (even switching out the focus switch), but easily tweaked with a EQ. Still, there is no thin sound at most ranges, nice and warm, and that is great. The pop filter works, somewhat, so you might want to engage another pop filter if you are recording voice in studio or for broadcast purposes. The mic should work well as overheads for drum kits, and maybe as a kick mic, but haven't tried on a kick myself just yet. For those looking at a mic for broadcast purposes, and don't want to spend the money for a RE20 or a RE320 (or a Rode Broadcaster, the RE20 has a little too much high end and bite in my opinion; a design that has been around for years, and suitable for AM radio, but in my opinion, not FM or Internet, and I haven't tried the Rode yet). The Spark will do pretty much what you want it to do, as long as you can EQ a little high end into it if needed. Will admit, I think Blue could reduce the price a bit if they went to a standard soft case, and not go with a wood case and included XLR cable (though it is nice to be sure), but it could shave at least 10 bucks off the price. Overall, this is a good to excellent mic for the price.
This is the first mic i've spent more than $100 on and i must say, it really is a fantastic mic! first of all, i love the way it looks! its really fantastic! second, the sound is super clear. thats what surprised me the most. i did some test recording in my software (logic) and i didn't even have to put any EQs on it! its a great deal! i would definitely recommend getting this mic!
So the other person who has reviewed this mic has already touched on everything I wanted to say. I picked this mic up at guitar center in person about a week ago and I have not been let down! To add on to what the other person already said, this mic works great on many different things besides voice. I tried it out with my acoustic guitar and the tones sound SO clear both while picking and strumming. I found it useful to engage the focus when playing chords and it totally gave me the clarity I was looking for. I also tried micing my amp to see how well it would work on that, and I got the same result. It was stellar to hear the playback of how clean the tone was. Even with quite a bit of gain it did not muddy up like I feared that it might. Lastly, I just wanted to mention for all those post-hardcore/pop-punk types...this mic is great for the genre. The screams of all spectrums from thrashy like all the way to the lighter ones sound so good. The pop filter, also as aforementioned by the reviewer previous, works wonders! For the price this mic is a STEAL! Get it while it still comes in blue!
I've always wanted a Blue microphone. Just look at its sexy body! When the orange color first appeared, I thought that it was cool, but when the special blue finish edition came out around the holidays, I knew it was time to pull the trigger. The features are basic, no bass roll-off filter, no input attenuation, no selectable polar patterns, etc., but it does have clarity. The FOCUS switch on the back of the mic at the bottom does indeed roll off the bass and "focuses" the sound with a slight presence peak that makes vocals stand out. I had a recording in Cakewalk's Sonar X1 that I had done some vocals in the past on another mic, but I had to dub in a few new sections. With the focus button engaged, the new Blue mic vocals really stood out, not trebley, but just more "focused", an undefinable characteristic that is immediately obvious. Of course, you can record full spectrum with it disengaged. Reliability-wise, so far so good. Never, as of yet, have had any problems with it, and, of course, never needed to contact Blue. It comes with an impressive wooden box, quite larger than what I expected, a well made metal pop screen, and a more unusual suspension mount. The blue finish is stunning, especially contrasted against the other nonfinished components. I appreciated the fact that they included a well made quality mic cable with it, blue color no less! In short, I am very pleased with this mic and would recommend it to anyone wanting to record. Rush out and get this blue finish edition before they are all gone! If that turns out to the be the case, then go ahead and get the super cool looing orange edition. Either way, you can't go wrong!
