Compress yourself

The BBE Opto Stomp is a very good, quiet compressor. So long as you set it right, this pedal works perfectly and the only thing you'll notice is a cleaner, better sounding you.

Best Value for Optical Compression

There are less expensive compressors, but not less expensive optical compressors. I use the BBE opto-stomp with an acoustic guitar, primarily for finger picking, to get a more intimate sound. It gives the guitar more presence and sustain without squashing the attack or altering the tone. The attack is preserved unless you push the "sustain" nob up past 7, then the effect can be pretty pronounced. If you are going for that country compressed tele sound, this probably won't work for you. For acoustic, bass, and maybe even jazz, this would be an excellent choice. The enclosure is well built: the knobs feel sturdy. BEE is kind enough to include a 9v battery and a power supply. One small disappointment is that the enclosure sides have a slight angle (not perpendicular to the face) which makes it impossible to use straight or even offset couplers in a pedal chain: you'll have to use patch cables. This pedal might be too big for crowded pedal boards. All things considered. I think this pedal is an excellent value.

Great for Guitar

This pedal is simply great for guitar. It provides enough gain and compression to prevent loud notes from becoming too loud while helping the quieter notes become noticible in the mix; afterall, that's what compression is all about. I usually have the level knob set at 12 o'clock while the compression knob is set to 1 o'clock and it makes everything from leads to chords sound 100% better, honestly. The only thing is doesn't work great for is bass guitar. Bass guitar simply covers more dynamic range, and therefore requires a strong compression source. I find myself turing the compression knob almost all the way up to produce the effect i want, and while that does indeed level out some of the ridiculously loud bass notes, it closes out all the other ones as well. I wish it could be more selective, but i don't think this pedal was meant for bass, honestly. I would suggest looking into a compression pedal or rackmount unit if you play bass, but if you need a good boost/squash effect to add to your guitar, i would definitely recommend this BBE pedal. it works beautifully for guitar.
