Who is B52? - read on..

Went to Guitar Center last night, shopping for a new amp. 3 hours I spent in there!! In my head, I wanted a Marshall 100W head, hybrid, tube or Solid Sate, or even a Marshall Combo. I am looking for three channels (clean, rhythm and solo via footswitch, reverb and at least 100W, tubes preferred). Looking at distortion via amp that is not fuzzy or have hiss, good tone, clean/clarity and warm distortion. So, I tried the AVT150W Marshall head - Hybrid - it sucked!!.. distortion not good and only two channels, it had built in effects (not keen on them), but guess what?.. they put reverb as part of the effects dial and you can only use one at a time, that right there put me off. Big mistake by Marshall on that, reverb should always be on its own. Then tried the mighty and well talked about JCM2000 100W triple super lead head. Had all the channels, reverb, but surprisingly, the distortion/overdrive was 70's like in spite of spending a whole hour on it trying to get the right setting and tones, I would definitely have needed a distortion pedal for JCM. Great amps, but too 70's sounding. Then tried the Marshall MG series, Heads and Combos, super channels, nice distortion and excellent reverb with a touch of delay, but, when I looked at the back, the speaker out configuration was stereo, so using a cab would have sucked, just wasn't right and, it was Solid State anyway, so it had the hiss and fuzz with the distortion, just not the right tone. Then tried a Marshall 350W MF series head, this was great, but it was Solid State and the same results on good distortion, but tone wasn't there, it has hiss and fuzz with the distortion. I tried new Marshalls and the used Marshalls, various types - I got to to tell ya.. I don't know what all the hype is about Marshalls, they are great, if you are playing in 1970's, I couldn't get any squeal or tap on harmonics on OD1 & OD2 with full gain? So, I went to check out the Peavey tube heads, I used to own a Peavey many years ago. Right away, I was put off, All Peavey's have footswitches, but they don't sell the footswitches with them?.. totally stupid idea!!! Off to the Fender amps, I have had a few Fender amps in my time and frankly, these haven't changed over the years, except the price for the name and they still have that bell/bright sound to them, not warm enough at all, but so far, these were the best I tested. But I just wasn't satisfied. I did not want to go near the VOX, Crate or Line 6 stuff.. I just don't like them at all for various reasons. VOX need to stop placing the knobs at the back, was ok in the 60's when the Beatles had amps in front of them.. doesn't and hasn't worked since as the years have gone by. Crate etc.. are just cheap models. So... I was about to walk out - totally disappointed!!! Then !! ----- I walked past a "B-52" AT100 all tube 100W head, it has the tri-mode rectifier (tube, tube and SS or SS), A - A/B setting - very nice feature, Mesa have these and I used to have a Mesa Boogie amp in the UK many years ago. The head goes through the exact same cab as my Marshall, except the B52 cab does not have Celestions like mine. (Marshall AVT412). B52 call there cab almost same as Marshall - AT412 - go figure? So I tried out the beast, in the first five minutes I just knew it!! - this was the one, three channels, reverb, clean, OD1 and OD2, excellent distortion and yet clean and has clarity and.. it's ALL TUBE!! Buy the Beast!! - It Rocks!!!

Great amp

I got this amp mostly because I was looking for something tube and not too expensive. Its pretty good practicing in my basement, but playing onstage and turned up, it's amazing. I play a lot of melodic/death metal on a BC Rich Mockingbird, and this amp gives an almost perfect sound. Also, its great for a more vintage sound (which I use for old school hardcore) as well. The only drawback is the expected feedback from any tube amp, which comes in full force. The clean channel is beautiful for anything from strumming to blues as well. Definately a good choice amp.

Versatile underrated amp.

The B-52 AT-100... Underrated, but only by those who don't own them. It's a pretty versatile amp if you've got a good enough guitar. Most of my experience with this amp had been with an Epiphone Les Paul, and about the only thing it did well was distortion. Times have changed now and I'm running a 1952 Telecaster Reissue, and this amp really shines, especially with the recent addition of a Marshall 1960 cabinet. Basically, what B-52 was going for with this amp was a feature-laden all-tube amp aimed at the people that are starting to play out to crowds who need more power than their old combo amps could provide. And trust me, this amp loves to be turned up. As with any tube amp (and many solid-state amps as well) it doesn't really sound good until its pushed past 4 or 5. The sound is somewhere between a Marshall JCM2000 and a Mesa Rectifier. I am not saying it sounds as good as either of those amps (though I'm not particularly fond of today's Marshall's anyway) but that's what they were aiming for and they did a pretty good job. Essentially, for the price, this a fantastic amp with more features than amps that cost twice as much. The only amp I know of off hand that has more features is the rectifier series (especially dual and triple). Great value.

Trust me, you'll like it!

I've been playing 30+ years and have owned numerous amps ( Marshall, Carvin, Fender, Sunn, etc, etc) through the years. This amp flat out rocks! It will rival the best tube heads out there at a fraction of the cost. It's put togehter well and once you get familiar with the controls, it is very easy to dial in any sound. The rectifier feature can even further tailor the sound. I am running it on the Rectifier A setting through a Marshall 1960A cab and using a BBE Sonic Maximizer up front and a Boss EQ in the loop and that really adds to the sound. The separate voume controls for each overdrive gain channel can really boost your leads. With this feature, you don't have to sweat it if the soundman ran to the bar for a drink when the big solo comes around! Overall a great amp no matter what the price is.

Worth it

Saved up all summer for this amp. I bought it with the B-52 4x12 cab. It barely fits in my room, and this thing is loud. The most impressive thing about this amp is the amazing crunch of the distortion it delivers. The first time I used its distortion i was blown away by it. The clean tone is absolutely no slouch, either. This amp is worth every penny.
