I just received two of these pedals for my double bass kit yesterday. I decided on the Axis X-L after considering Pearl's new Demon Drive eliminator, and the Trick Big Foot pedals. I settled with Axis due to their price. I'm beyond impressed. I'll admit they take awhile to get used to. Two of the big things these pedals get for bad reviews is their simplicity (not many adjustable options) and lack of power. The simplicity of these pedals makes for easier maintenance. These pedals DO NOT lack power, it's really just in the beaters you're using. I switched off to Tama CB90R beaters, and the response is amazing. I've heard from others before that these aren't that durable, once again, that's not true. They look a little more flimsy in pictures than they really are. My only true problem with these is the Axis insignia on the pedal. The edges are sharp, and make it pretty difficult to play without shoes. It's true that these have a hoop clamp that doesn't grip incredibly well, however the velcro used for holding onto carpet is so good that I struggle to pull it off of the floor (both a pro and a con). One last feature I like about these is the dual joint holding the tension spring. Overall I'd safely say this pedal is great for anyone seeking to upgrade to direct drive. They may not be for those seeking extremely high adjustability, but the simplicity is great for those not wanting to constantly contend with the settings.
I purchased this pedal and I am extremely impressed. I travel and gig all the time with it and the durability is amazing even though its so light weight. I put a puresound speedball beater on mine and the speeed I have achieved is awesome. I reccomend this pedal to anyone pro or habbiest.
I have minor nerve damage from the waist down, which made keeping up with my kick a bit difficult with chain drive. This is my first direct drive and it has been like a miracle, so much more responsive and a lot less effort involved, that i believe i can enjoy my hobby for some time to come. Whether your healthy or have limits to what you can do, i don't see how you could do any better than the Axis X-L longboard, on quality and price. IF? it ever needs replaced, it will be with an Axis product. Thank you!!!
