I own them, I use them, I LOVE them!
I picked up 2 Eleate 8 Audix drum mic kits about 6 years ago. Back then the sale price for that mic kit was 2 grand a piece. The diffrence between the Eleate 8 and this mic kit is the overheads. The Eleate 8 had 3 SCX-1 mics per kit. The SCX mics were outstanding sounding but I found them to be way too sensitive. I could hear my neighbors talking in thier front yard across the street with the SCX 1. I used them once during a live band setting on a crowded stage and the soundman gave up trying to use them because too much bass and guitar was getting into the SCX 1. Even set up in my rehersal space the SCX 1 picked up way too much tom tom and kick drum...even they were physically located closer to my cymbals. No matter what I tried to do with positioning I ran in to that same problem. Higher cielings is what I believe the SCX-1 needs and to be used for recording...or a Zepplin style set up...2 overheads...Kick and snare...also a plexiglass shield in front if used in a live setting. I did order a pair of ADX 51's and that was exactally what my rehersal space needed. The 10-db cut switch and low frequency roll off helped to block kick and toms out of the overheads...although it is difficult to completly block the kick and snare out of the overheads...engaging both switches allowed the overheads to hear the cymbals more prodominatly over the rest of the kit. All the other mics are all outstanding. You will find that your soundman will love using these mics...because they will hardly need to mess with any EQ. I found it a lot of fun to move the kick mic around...trying diffrent positions with it...the D-6 is simply the best kick mic I have ever heard. The I-5 is also the best snare mic I have ever heard. The price of this mic kit...is also very reasionable. These mics are excellent for recording studio, rehersals and live gigs. It is the only mic kit drummers will ever need. Also I'd like to point out the Audix's warrenty and repair service is second to NONE. I had trouble with my SCX 1 mics...and they needed to be sent back to Audix 4 times before they finally got those mics RIGHT. They had some design flaws however Audix stood by thier product...and made design upgrades to my 6 mics...for FREE. Now my SCX-1's are very relieable and work as advertised.
Excellent microphones for the money! I have used them in studio and live situations and have had great results. Most impressive aspect in my opinion is that they are pretty much ready to go out of the box. Setup and adjust levels with no feedback issues. Very much worth the investment if you want to mike up you kit. D-6 is great for kick and the overheads really pickup cymbals as well as toms quite nicely. Again, very good mic pack for the money!
