This is a very versitle mic. You can use it to get a punchy kick in the chest sound or you can use it to broad deep bass sound that just helps compliment everything with a little or a lot of adjusting on the board. A little if the drum is tuned right or a bit more to bring it to life. Has an extremely high threshold for drummers that like to nail the kick. I am a frequent Audix customer when it comes to instrument mics. I have i5's as well as all my toms are miked with Audix. They are the people you want when getting mics for any instrument but especially drums. The D6 is one of the best additions you can make. Incredibly sturdy and more than gets the job done. If you want to hear the kick then this is where its at. Due to what this thing can do, the price is well worth it.
It really blew me away how easy it was to EQ. I was able to get an amazing low end tone with the right amount decay at the end. Great kick/thud sound. My bass drum is ported and muffled. Secondly, Is it worth $200? In my opinion, Yes. I've tried it on a 21" kick, 16" & 14" tom and a 12" x 24" djembe.. all applications ended with the same result..me happy with the sound. O ya..It looks sweet.
I've used a few other Kick drum mics over time. I read reviews and listen to what other drummers use. I walk up and look and even ask the drummers what they are using. Curious I guess....The pros are endorsed so I don't really pay much attention to what they say. No disrespect! Most recording magazines or live sound mags float between the Shure Beta 52 and the Audix D6. It's all about what you are looking for. I've found that setting EQ with the Audix is easier. I'm a "less is more" kind of person. I really dont have to touch a dial on my board for the D6. With the addition of the new "Kickport" for bass drums and the D6, set just even with the front drumhead, it is the easiest drum to set up in either recording or a live show. It works equally as well with a full drumhead on the front. Just quit looking and buy it. You will be happy you did.
This mic gets a lot of drummer love, but I never really see a review for bass players. This mic is perfect for bass cabs or combos. I usually use my direct out on the amp to go to the board, but when you add this mic into the mix you get amazing results. Amazing clarity adding a huge volume boost and extremely ruggedly built. I strongly recommend adding this mic to your arsenal for any touring bass player and even bass players playing small shows a couple times a month. Epicly great microphone. A must have!
This microphone gives you a nice thud when the kick it hit. This mic works best when stuck inside the kick drum and isolates really nicely. I love this mic and wouldn't use any other.
I absolutely love this mic. I use it in a club setting nearly every night and I have absolutely no complaints. Even with people who don't cut holes in their resonant heads like they should, I can still get the ultra clicky sound while still maintaining the kick-in-the-chest low end I'm after.
This is a really nice mic, very appropriate for the kick drum. It's best for that and floor toms; doesn't work too well with bass cabs in my experience. Also in my experience, it works best when inserted into the bass drum, rather than outside. Good thump, very nice low end. I just wish there were more attack on it, kinda like a modern rock/metal kick. It's still, however, a very, very good product.
This mic is so sweet for a kick drum. It gets the thump that other dynamics can't quite capture because of its design. The machined aluminum housing looks cool and is rugged for years of (ab)use. No other mic I have used has the same impact, sonic or visual, as the D6
