Overview

The Audio Technica ATW-251 Freeway VHF Guitar Wireless System is designed to provide reliable performance, easy setup and clear, natural sound quality. The Freeway Wireless Microphone System includes the ATW-R250 receiver and the ATW-T201 body-pack transmitter on a specific crystal-controlled frequency. A novel dipole antenna system on the receiver improves operation by providing a ground element in addition to the usual signal element.

ATW-R250 receiver

The ATW-R250 receiver includes a space-saving switching power supply that automatically adapts to changes in mains voltage. Unlike bulky linear power supplies, this switching power supply is lightweight and compact; it uses only a single outlet space.

ATW-T201 UniPak body-pack transmitter

The versatile ATW-T201 UniPak body-pack transmitter has both a high-impedance input for instruments, and a low-impedance input with bias connection for use with dynamic and electret condenser microphones. The ATW-T201 uses internal 9-volt batteries and has an Off/Standby/On switch, input Trim (level) adjustment, and battery-save switch.

Consumer Alert:

Most users do not need a license to operate this wireless microphone system. Nevertheless, operating this microphone system without a license is subject to certain restrictions: the system may not cause harmful interference; it must operate at a low power level (not in excess of 50 milliwatts); and it has no protection from interference received from any other device. Purchasers should also be aware that the FCC is currently evaluating use of wireless microphone systems, and these rules are subject to change. For more information, call the FCC at 1-888-CALL-FCC (TTY: 1-888-TELL-FCC) or visit the FCCs wireless microphone website at: www.fcc.gov/cgb/wirelessmicrophones.

So this is my first wireless system and I must say, this is definately a EXCELLENT purchase for both price, and for it being my first. Now going through these reviews most people have just talked about how it would either cut out/not cut out (Depending on review) and such, and how easy it is to use. Well I was more worried about the tone than the Ease of use, Which I was also concerned about. Well it has passed my test with FLYING colors, this thing is truely amazing. It has a good strong Signal, (I havent had ANY cut outs, a little buzz, but no cut outs) and it has kept the same if not BETTER tone than the Live Wire cable I was using. I Was also impressed on how easy it was to hook up: 1. Take it out of the box (Duh) 2. Take the power adapter (Supplied) and plug it into a power outlet 3. Plug the Adapter into the back of the Reciever (bigger piece of system, small plug in the back it's the only one you cant miss it, the lights should come on on the front of the unit, this lets you know its on a functioning, unplug to turn off) 4: Plug in Instrument cable (Not Supplied) to the back of the Unit in the 1/4" input jack, then connect other end to the Amplifier or Mixer you are using 5: Put a 9V Battery in the back of the Transmitter (Battery NOT Supplied) 6: Connect the small Reciever-1/4" Cable to the Transmitter unit (Both supplied) and use small clip on back to connect to Guitar/Bass Strap 7: Plug Cable into guitar/bass and turn switch on Transmitter to ST(Standby-Middle position) 8: Turn amp/Mixer on and turn up volume on reciever unit to Max for full tone, then amp/mixer volume level to desired volume 9: Switch Transmitter to ON mode 10: Play and adjust setting on pedals, amp/mixer, or anything else if needed.// That is the easy 10 Step method to set it up and use VERY simple. The unit is lightweight and yet feels VERY durable in my opinion. All in all though this unit is Very affordable, easy to use, Excellent Performance, and no tone loss. Also Because I noticed none of the other reviews said anything about it, I am Happy to say, this unit was highly effective on Clean, Light Gain, Medium Gain, & Hi Gain settings. The only con I see to this unit, is the clip on the back of the Transmitter, I had to use a Strap to Tighten the hold of the Transmitter to my guitar strap so it would quit falling off and sliding around. I Hope this Review will help you make your choice in your Wireless System.

This is ok for playing at home close to the amp. (like with in 15 ft)but when you get out of that range it starts to give an annoying feedback when you turn at weird angles. I mean, 15 feet?! Come on! I would not recomend this product for playing at any shows. but for just playing at home, it's ok. Over all not worth the money, this is going back to the store today.

Works great so far

By Mike Abney

from Texas

Comments about Audio-Technica ATW-251 Freeway VHF Guitar Wireless System:

I haven't used it a ton yet, but it has been to a couple of band sessions. The range is great and not having the cord to worry about is great when we change positions. (Sometimes I sing, sometimes one of the other folks does. Currently we only have one mic.) There are two reasons I'm not giving it five stars. First, it seems just a little on the fragile side. This is a concern for me especially when I haul it from home to our sessions. Second, I would prefer if the clip for the guitar-side unit would be more secure if I just clip it to the guitar strap. This would make it easier for me to hand the guitar to someone else, if necessary. Still, for the price, it is great to be wireless.

Beast

By Michelle Lee

Comments about Audio-Technica ATW-251 Freeway VHF Guitar Wireless System:

I went into my local guitar center and saw this up on the wall and I thought I might try it out because I could always take it back. The funny thing is I got this four months ago and it works great. It is nice and compact and i could run around a stage all night and still get signal. It keeps a good battery live, it's very low voltage so I don't have to replace the battery often. But it is great for my live rig, I would completely recommend this to a friend I am planning on getting more wireless transmitters and microphones so I can run all my equipment off that. There is no cut out what so ever with mine.

No More Wires

By Samuel Besse

from Valencia, CA

Comments about Audio-Technica ATW-251 Freeway VHF Guitar Wireless System:

Never had a wireless guitar before; never going back to cables. This is my first wireless unit; it was easy to set up, the price was right, and I don't see using guitar cables again, ever. I typically use two guitars at gigs; for the price of two quality guitar cables, I was able to get the wireless rig. Switching from one guitar to another is quick; I turn the volume pedal on my effects board all the way down, turn off the transmitter, unplug and unstrap, grab the new guitar, plug in strap up, turn on the transmitter and I am good to go. The quality seems to be there so far (this is a good brand of equipment) and reliability has not been a problem. If it becomes a problem, I'll write again.

Perfect for my use

By Minh Pham

from Boynton Beach, FL

Comments about Audio-Technica ATW-251 Freeway VHF Guitar Wireless System:

I've been using this system for 3 months now, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I am not a professional musician, but was just looking for an affordable wireless system to do away with the guitar cable, which can get in the way sometimes. I don't know how this performs in gigs, but for home use, this is simply perfect because of what you get for the price (I paid $69.99). The sound is clean; I cannot differentiate the tones between using this vs a guitar cable. The battery life is pretty good; I purchased some rechargeable lithium batteries, and each charge typically give me a few days of use (not continuous use of course). The range is good; I tested it as far as I can inside my house (approx 70 feet), and there was no disconnect or disruption to the sound. The housing is plastic and somewhat flimsy; but I expected this for the price. The only thing that I wish this product would provide is selectable frequencies. When you purchase this system, you have to chose from one of three frequencies. If the proximity of where you play has some interference in that frequency band, then you're screwed. At this price, I'm so tempted to just get another one with different freq just in case. I highly recommend this one for anyone who's looking for a first wireless guitar system.

great buy

By Alex Lee

Comments about Audio-Technica ATW-251 Freeway VHF Guitar Wireless System:

I recently bought this idem at my local guitar center, this is an amazing product. It works great i just plug it into my amp and walk around the house shreading. The signal it just amazing i get no cut outs no glitches or static or feedback. It is amazing for the price. The only thing on the system that doesn't work well is the clip on the receiver it does't hook to the strap very well, i would just recommend hooking it on your back pocket. Hooking it on your back pocket works a lot better. But other than that it is a great product and i would diffidently recommend this to a friend.

Great price for getting "un-tethered"

By Minh Pham

from Boynton Beach, FL

Comments about Audio-Technica ATW-251 Freeway VHF Guitar Wireless System:

I'm not a performer, just a guitar hobbyist who doesn't want to get tethered down while I'm practicing the guitar. I paid $60 for this system after rebate, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I was expecting some noise and degradation in tone, but see neither. The range is decent as well. I can walk all around the house and the sound is still very solid. This is what I use every day now for playing my guitar. I did purchase some rechargeable 9V batteries because how much I use the system. The battery life is just about what Audio Technica claims: I get around 20 hours of use per battery, when used in the low power mode. I'm giving this a 4 and not a 5 because the housing to both the transmitter and receiver are plastic, and the battery door just does not seem that solid. Also, I wish that there were a power button on the receiver as well. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase, and would recommend this to anyone who wants to give wireless system a try.

Awful

By Justin Rodgers

from Pittsburgh, PA

Comments about Audio-Technica ATW-251 Freeway VHF Guitar Wireless System:

This product is just awful. I don't know if the one I got was just a dud, but there is constant noise and feedback. I had heard a lot of negative things about audio technica, and I thought I would give them a chance for myself. I definitely learned my lesson, and will not be purchasing one of their products again.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATW-251 Freeway VHF Guitar Wireless System:

Been using for a couple of weeks now and has been terrific. Used with my Taylor on two different systems and hasn't had any problem. Used at 10ft from the receiver and 25ft from the receiver with great results.

AMAZING

By T.J. Belek

Comments about Audio-Technica ATW-251 Freeway VHF Guitar Wireless System:

This was much better than I thought, I was expecting to work just in my room, and maybe just outside my door. I could walk down stairs, and outside, and still had good sound coming though my amp. VERY impressed, and you couldn't go wrong with this.
