I have heard so much about these headphones, that I finally decided to pick up a pair. First, I have to admit that I was not very impressed with the visual appearance of these headphones. They're made mostly of plastic and not many metal components to be found anywhere, except for the metal bands that reinforce the headband. These things sound really clean and although I use them primarily for DJ use, I have been using them for all sorts do things and they're still impressing me. They come with THREE different replaceable cables and a pretty nice leather(ish) carrying pouch. The ear pads are made from a very nice material that feels like real leather, and is extremely soft. The foam in the ear pads feels like it could be memory foam but holds its shape very well. Although they are made from all plastic, they have no noticeable noise or "creaks" that are common with headphones like this, although I've only had them for a few weeks. They feel like they are gonna last so I have no regrets with my purchase so far. I'm comparing these up against a few headphones... The Sony MDR7506, Sennheiser HD25, Sennheiser Amperior, V-Moda Croosfade LP2 and I'd say that they're closest to the 7506 in size and shape. The Sony MDR7506 sounds just a touch brighter in the upper mid-range compared to the ATH-M50x. The ATH-M50x sounds completely neutral across the entire spectrum and I can easily focus in on any details I wanted to hear, without effort. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these to anyone without a good set of monitors, and if you're looking for a new pair, definitely check these out. Especially for the price!

Immediately after getting them, I found I couldn't wear them for more than an hour before my ears started hurting. The pads were nowhere near thick enough. But... they did sound incredible. I took a foot long strip of toilet paper and twisted it into a rope, then I crammed it under the pads all the way around... problem solved. Flash forward two years, I'm running them through a focusrite USB interface, and I realize the sound is INFINITELY better with a good headphone amp... don't think Your cell phone can truly power these things.

I dearly love these headphones, but after 2 years the plastic layer on the earpads and headpad are crumbling away from their backer. Audio Technica has been making these phones for years, and they haven't figured out that these parts wear out faster than the rest of the unit? My next set of phones will be from a company that offers replacements. These phones have years of life left on them, maybe even a decade, but if I can't replace the headpad without desperately searching online for ANYTHING that might even remotely fit, then I'm just going to find phones with support from a better company.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

As a teen myself, I was wanting a versatile multi-purpose headset, primarily for listening to music and gaming at home. I have found that this headphone exceeds my expectations at these tasks. As far as the physical aspect and aesthetics of this product, it is very durable with silver accents lining the exterior and the Audio Technica logo engraved on the side. They are a bit bulky and large, but the comfort compensates for any size concerns. As far as sound quality, these headphones have shimmery highs accompanied by an excellent bass response that is punchy yet not overpowering over the mids and highs. Even though these headphones are intended for monitor and studio use, they don't have a completely neutral sound with a slight emphasis on the lows and highs. I personally like this choice but I feel it is worth mentioning because they are not for people who want a completely flat sound. This aspect of the m50xs accompanies for the sound signature of modern music that naturally has this emphasis, making me like it even more. I was a bit leery about purchasing these since I wanted a portable headset, but the m50xs work well as portable headphones with a designated mobile cable, along with a carrying case and a very flexible design. Overall the Ath-M50x is a headset for those who do not want to buy Beats, Skullcandy and all of the other name brand headphones that make up the portable audio market today, but want an all purpose headphone for use at home or on the go. I would recommend these in a heartbeat over any other headphone I have tested previously.

    Good value for money!

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I'm an engineer by trade, and have built amplifiers since I was a kid, now with well over 30 years of engineering experience and a lot of knowledge richer I would class this product as a surprisingly good reproducer. The imaging of these headphones is quite amazing, making them an easy listener that doesn't fatigue very quickly. For monitoring they might be a little too forgiving, and the precision of the region below 100hz is not too great. It surprised me some critique on these headphones is that it lacks bass, all I can imagine is you probably run gear not capable of delivering sufficient current, or you've spoiled your reference point of your own ears by always listening to a far too bass pronouncing system.

These are 38 ohm impedance headphones, that naturally demand some drive and therefore will sound more different on different equipment than a HD600 for instance, which is a lot higher impedance. It's rather the popular choice of headphone manufacturers of today, to compensate for the mpobile devices lack of output power, making the best out of such poor outputs.

It is still an amazing package, they are not only comfortable and light, but the materials also feel very pro and the design is well done. The plug in cable first enters the shell with a fairly thick plastic covered shaft, before turning in to a minijack connector, smart as it won't break too quick and locks in nicely firm.

I own electrostatic headphones of Stax and these come really near in terms of the spatial performance, there is a tonne of depth in the reproduction, midrange is very clean and very precise and the high range is clear, but not too sharp.

Would definitely recommend them for just nice listening, not so much for monitoring as they are simply not linear enough and not precise enough in the bottom end.

I have tried and or owned many headphones and the ATH 50x bl is the best sounding and best looking of any. I have been listening to music since before HI-FI (70+ years old). I enjoy the portability of my music on iPods and smart phones and the M50x brings out the best of these devices. But hooked up to a simple CD player brings your music listening to a new level. During the recording of "Kisses on the Bottom" Paul McCartney along with Diana Krall and her band they wore ATH 50's. Listening to that album with my 50x's It felt as if I was at Capital Studios with them. Thank you Audio-technica for a great product. You made an old man very happy.

Very good in audio quality. Top marks for it. Best balanced sound. Great swivel design. At this price tag though I would have preferred good leather and also better hard case container to store my precious headphone. This is the only reason it let me down. The next iteration should bring the Bass switch and some more isolation if possible. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE in the next iteration.

I bought it like in july , i have been using it for 2 months . The good things about this headphones is that , the audio is perfect compare to any other brand , like bose , the audio not really that good in bose . I have 1 cons : the pouch , the reason i write this is because the pouch , unlike the m70x , they have a portal bag , which is better than the pouch . The pouch size is a bit small , so its just nice to fit the headphones , but no space for the wire . this is the only cons .

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I came into buying these just expecting to use em for MONITORING and Recording. But the same day I bought em, I was in the car and decided to start burning them in, and at first I was just like 'meh'. Until I gave it more time, and then BOOM the sound just blew my mind. The bass was deep and punchy, but you could give a bit of a bass boost and you could get some of the BUMPY bass. The mids, crisp, clean and audible. I can hear almost hidden things within the music that surprise me. And I can hear almost every single different instrument. Esepcially with songs by Serj Tankian where there are multi-vocal tracks; I can hear each individual track perfectly. Trebles, wow, not too bright, not to warm. Just right, cymbals sound clean, and female vocals are almost scary to listen to just because of their preciseness. The sound stage is absolutely amazing for a closed back, wouldnt call it godly soundstage. Sound isolation is amazing , great for recording drums. Comfortable as heck, and light as well. And do not worry, these do not need too much power, since they only are 38 ohms. You can if you want to so you can get a bit of a volume boost. The only cons: pretty quiet even on my overkill PC, underdone bag, proprietary cables, no mic/control cable, NO RED VERSION M50x?(wish they had the m50x in red) But as you can read, the pros heavily out weigh the cons. My previous favorite were the Beats Mixrs, but these definitely beat them in the sound quality department. I recommend these to anyone who wants great sound for a pretty darn good price. ANYONE I SAY!
