I have heard so much about these headphones, that I finally decided to pick up a pair. First, I have to admit that I was not very impressed with the visual appearance of these headphones. They're made mostly of plastic and not many metal components to be found anywhere, except for the metal bands that reinforce the headband. These things sound really clean and although I use them primarily for DJ use, I have been using them for all sorts do things and they're still impressing me. They come with THREE different replaceable cables and a pretty nice leather(ish) carrying pouch. The ear pads are made from a very nice material that feels like real leather, and is extremely soft. The foam in the ear pads feels like it could be memory foam but holds its shape very well. Although they are made from all plastic, they have no noticeable noise or "creaks" that are common with headphones like this, although I've only had them for a few weeks. They feel like they are gonna last so I have no regrets with my purchase so far. I'm comparing these up against a few headphones... The Sony MDR7506, Sennheiser HD25, Sennheiser Amperior, V-Moda Croosfade LP2 and I'd say that they're closest to the 7506 in size and shape. The Sony MDR7506 sounds just a touch brighter in the upper mid-range compared to the ATH-M50x. The ATH-M50x sounds completely neutral across the entire spectrum and I can easily focus in on any details I wanted to hear, without effort. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these to anyone without a good set of monitors, and if you're looking for a new pair, definitely check these out. Especially for the price!

Immediately after getting them, I found I couldn't wear them for more than an hour before my ears started hurting. The pads were nowhere near thick enough. But... they did sound incredible. I took a foot long strip of toilet paper and twisted it into a rope, then I crammed it under the pads all the way around... problem solved. Flash forward two years, I'm running them through a focusrite USB interface, and I realize the sound is INFINITELY better with a good headphone amp... don't think Your cell phone can truly power these things.

I dearly love these headphones, but after 2 years the plastic layer on the earpads and headpad are crumbling away from their backer. Audio Technica has been making these phones for years, and they haven't figured out that these parts wear out faster than the rest of the unit? My next set of phones will be from a company that offers replacements. These phones have years of life left on them, maybe even a decade, but if I can't replace the headpad without desperately searching online for ANYTHING that might even remotely fit, then I'm just going to find phones with support from a better company.

I use these on occasion as my monitor instead of a wedge or stand mount monitor. They work great and are very comfortable.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I mix and master recordings for a living and have discovered the M50x headphones give a fairly true representation of what's being recorded . The M50x rival some of my higher priced headphones ($1000 plus) and parallel my studio monitors very closely. They have proven to be excellent, especially for what they cost. They give a true flat response and are, in my opinion better than any products from Sony and Sennheiser in this price range.
Of course the m50x headphones are a subjective piece of equipment that may work for your critical listening , and would suggest you A/B them before purchasing them.

They worked for the first 2 months then the left side just went dead. I checked the cable's continuity, opened up the left cup to check the soldering integrity. All checked out. Maybe the electronics running that speaker burned out. I'm not sure. Maybe I just got a lemon.

I got these headphones 4 years ago (technically the are the M50 not M50X). They have only gotten better the longer I have owned them. The earpads can be uncomfortable but the sound is terrific. It blows my mind that I've owned them for so long and they still sound this good. If you can tell, I love these headphones and would recommend them to everyone.

The cords to the headphones have all broke. I was a big Audio-Technica fan, I have the at4040 microphone, which is amazing. Purchased a lot of products from them but the these headphones will be the last. Poorly made, falling apart. Shorting in out with the signal. Not impressed and paid almost $200.

I bought these with the impression that they'd be the best set of closed back headphones at this price point. I was wrong. The sound signature to these is V Shaped, but more present mids than the standard M50's. The bass is muffled, and the very high frequencies are quite sibilant. I find the placement of the drivers too close to my skull, even physicalling hurting my ears after long durations of wearing. It would probably be better with a larger set of ear cup. All problems aside, I really like the portability, packaging, the 3 detachable cords, and the carrying pouch.

The ATH-M50x are very solid in fit and performance, thus far. I'm really appreciating the quality of sound, fit, and price (all) in comparison to very pricy Shure SRH-940s which broke at the left headphone hinge. The ATH-M50x fold completely flat which is a nice transport protection. The only nick is the ATH-M50x come with a soft vinyl bag versus a semi-hard/hard case.
