I have heard so much about these headphones, that I finally decided to pick up a pair. First, I have to admit that I was not very impressed with the visual appearance of these headphones. They're made mostly of plastic and not many metal components to be found anywhere, except for the metal bands that reinforce the headband. These things sound really clean and although I use them primarily for DJ use, I have been using them for all sorts do things and they're still impressing me. They come with THREE different replaceable cables and a pretty nice leather(ish) carrying pouch. The ear pads are made from a very nice material that feels like real leather, and is extremely soft. The foam in the ear pads feels like it could be memory foam but holds its shape very well. Although they are made from all plastic, they have no noticeable noise or "creaks" that are common with headphones like this, although I've only had them for a few weeks. They feel like they are gonna last so I have no regrets with my purchase so far. I'm comparing these up against a few headphones... The Sony MDR7506, Sennheiser HD25, Sennheiser Amperior, V-Moda Croosfade LP2 and I'd say that they're closest to the 7506 in size and shape. The Sony MDR7506 sounds just a touch brighter in the upper mid-range compared to the ATH-M50x. The ATH-M50x sounds completely neutral across the entire spectrum and I can easily focus in on any details I wanted to hear, without effort. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these to anyone without a good set of monitors, and if you're looking for a new pair, definitely check these out. Especially for the price!

Very good in audio quality. Top marks for it. Best balanced sound. Great swivel design. At this price tag though I would have preferred good leather and also better hard case container to store my precious headphone. This is the only reason it let me down. The next iteration should bring the Bass switch and some more isolation if possible. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE in the next iteration.

A good offering, but not the best

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I bought these with the impression that they'd be the best set of closed back headphones at this price point. I was wrong. The sound signature to these is V Shaped, but more present mids than the standard M50's. The bass is muffled, and the very high frequencies are quite sibilant. I find the placement of the drivers too close to my skull, even physicalling hurting my ears after long durations of wearing. It would probably be better with a larger set of ear cup. All problems aside, I really like the portability, packaging, the 3 detachable cords, and the carrying pouch.

ATH-M50x's deliver big-time perfromance and fit

By Dennis

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

The ATH-M50x are very solid in fit and performance, thus far. I'm really appreciating the quality of sound, fit, and price (all) in comparison to very pricy Shure SRH-940s which broke at the left headphone hinge. The ATH-M50x fold completely flat which is a nice transport protection. The only nick is the ATH-M50x come with a soft vinyl bag versus a semi-hard/hard case.

These are stellar headphones for the money. Lossless files are a must or you will be getting far less out of this product than you could. I think the looks complement it very well—despite them being near half the price as those silly Beats, people notice them at least twice as much. I gave it a 4/5 for "Ease of Use" because the carrying back it comes with is a tight fit. Over these six-or-so months, however, the bags seems to have broken in pretty well and it goes in much more easily. A small increase in size would be nice.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I use my M50x monitors almost everyday and love them. I've had them for over a year now and they've proven to be tough an reliable. I wear them out and about, I'm not the most delicate person and they've nary an issue yet. I find they carry a wonderful industrial asethetic that fits with almost any situation.

They sounds fantastic, especially for the price. They aren't super "Beats" style bass heavy focused but they also aren't neutral, it's a very nice balance that makes them enjoyable to listen to for a variety of music types.

The only concern I've heard from friends who have tried them is that some found the clamping force slightly too high and a couple disliked the stock pads. I personally don't have these issues but it's something to keep in mind.

Great sound, but odd affect from cable connection

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I am very interested in sound and have operated as a sound tech for many years. Currently my purchase is primarily for very accurate music enjoyment.
I purchased the AT M50x as a replacement for my old Sony 7605. The 7506 had good sound quality, but was getting old and had basically no blocking of outside noise.
The AT M50X is an upgrade on all accounts. The Sound quality is excellent with very good volume across the Human range of frequencies. I have no problems with bass or the highs. Volume is very good. Outside noise is reduced greatly as compared to the 7506. You will hear talking, but it will be quieted. So, they will are like my Klepsch in-hear buds.

** I have two very important comments and requested design upgrades (not that it will do me any good, but I can dream). First, the cable connection, which uses three different cables and a apparently strong connector is good, and appreciated, but has a flaw that affects sound quality. The connector/cable is rigid and extends down too far. This creates an odd situation is which you can hear the cable drag across your collar when you turn your head. If the music is loud, you likely will not hear it. But it is there. If you are reading and playing music, it will be noticeable. I recommend a slight angle change or position change to eliminate that affect. Second, one more coat of texturized paint/coating, such as a thin rubberized coating, on the outside surface of the ear-cups would remove more of the outside noise to enhance sound monitor system and reduce more of the outside interference. They do reduce outside sound - but even more is easily possible.

These headphones are fantastic! I had to get these for an audio recording class and I absolutely love them! I had the Beats Studio headphones before this, but you can hear more harmonies and just all around sound with these Audio-Technicas. I was a little sketched out at first because i couldn't try them in the Guitar Center, but i love them! I will warn, they're not noise canceling and a bit bulky, but other than that, they're great! :)
