Audio-Technica ATH-M50S.....Great Headphones!!!

By Robert

from Gresham, Oregon

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

I just purchased 2 of the ATH-M50S Audio-Technica headphones. I originally went in to listen to another pair of Sennheiser HD 280 after losing my pair. I listened to the Sennheiser HD 380 last week only to find the left speaker crackling. Guitar Center had another pair that arrived yesterday. I wanted to wait to give the HD 380 a fair chance. This couldn't have worked out better since I spent the past week researching other headphones when I came across great reviews on the ATH-M50S model. My wife (that couldn't care less besides saying whether they sound good or hurt her ears), my daughter and I quickly all agreed that the ATH-M50S were easily the best compared to the HD 380's. It was like someone said, the HD 380's sounded like a blanket was put over the sound. I would never have known it without a direct comparison but sounded muffled compared to the M50's. There was a different person working in the store that brought out a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones. He didn't say they sounded better but just that they were more comfortable. I easily found that I had to turn up the volume significantly to drive the 770's. I matched the volume the best I could to make it fair. The sound only became hard sounding on trebles and some female voices compared to the M50's. The velvet ear cushions seemed nice but my family all like the M50's better since they were very comfortable as well while providing much better sound isolation. My daughter even said she could hear someone in the store playing music while she couldn't with the M50's. My wife decided not to even try the HD 280's. This is saying a lot since my wife mainly cares about the sound not hurting her ears. I thought for sure she would want to listen to the HD 280's or even prefer them since they are more forgiving. She liked the sound quality so much from the M50's that she didn't even want to hook up the HD 280's. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50S headphones are a steal for the price let along Guitar Center will to beat price advertised by an official dealer. Besides the SQ being great, the phones are so much more comfortable than the 280's or 380's along with being very flexible and durable. I personally don't see how these phones could be significantly improved with today's technology without going to open headphones. I hope this review helps. Robert

Great Cans

By Pat

from Boulder, CO

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

I just picked these cans up from my local guitar center, and am quite impressed. I tested most of the studio phones I could get my hands on and was most impressed with the response of the M50's. The High's are crisp and clear, the mid response is good and the bass is powerful and encompassing without being overpowering. The sound quality is good just listening to mp3's off itunes, but really shines when composing and mixing off Reason and Ableton. I can definitely recommend these with a clear conscious.

Wow, Just Amazing

By BRYCE

from Dacula

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

I spent almost a month looking for the "right" pair of headphones for my home mixing. A month is probably a long time to spend when you aren't planning on spending more than $100 anyways, maybe $150 tops, but it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside to know that my money has been well spent. I must have read a thousand user reviews of different headphones, and those from audio sites like Headroom, [...] and pro-oriented sites like MusiciansFriend. I tried out most of the more well-known headphones in this range, including Sony MDR-V6 and MDR-7506, V700DJ, Sennheiser HD280, HD485, HD515, HD595, Bose Quietcomfort 3, "over-ear" headphones, AKG K240, Grado SR80i and SR125, as well as the Audio-Technica AD700, A700 and m40fs. After making up my mind, I choose the ATH-m50s and do not regret it. These headphones are a all around great performers.

Investing in quality is pricey, but worth it.

By Rob

from Providence, RI

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

I'm not ready to acoustically treat my room and get studio monitors, so mixing headphones was the obvious choice for me. I needed to upgrade from mixing with Bose desktop speakers to get a flat response, and these headphones do not disappoint. Already I am hearing things in songs that I've never heard before. I listen to my old mixes and I can tell where I have been compensating. The clarity is phenomenal. They are very comfortable, and while they aren't noise cancelling headphones, the giant soft ear pads do muffle ambient room noise well.

Perfect!

By Fletch

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

The best pair of headphones I've ever owned period! Very much worth every penny. Since buying these I rarely use my studio monitors to mix anymore. I'm usually in sessions for 6-12 hrs a day & you simply can't beat the comfort. Hi's, mids & lows are very accurate & crystal clear. Spend the money & you wont regret it!

OUTSTANDING!!

By A.M.

from LOS ANGELES, CA

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

I don't want to drag on about this and that, but I do want to say THESE ARE THE BEST HEADPHONES-EVER!! I'm a tedious shopper and want the most and best for the money. When I went into the Guitar Center and heard the extreme clarity with deep accurate bass, I was sold. People believe me, these are worth $500.00... They're comfortable and the sound is amazing!! I'm happy these were suggested to me.

No, Seriously... These are IMPECCABLE!

By bruce k

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

Words cannot express how amazing these headphones are. I tried... I REALLY tried to find fault in these. I will go as far as to say, you will NOT a better quality mixing headphone than the ATH-M50S. I don't think a cleaner sound exists. You will hear things your brain has been trained to discard.

Top Ten for sure

By Henry

from Dandridge, TN

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

I used Sony MDR V6 headphones for the past several years and was pleased. After years of runnning over the cable with my chair they finally give it up. I researched the internet and saw the review for the ATH-M50S placed them in the top ten. I have been impressed with Audio Technica's products for years but have never tried their headphones until now. They are great headphones, very comfortable and the sound is amazing. The earpieces swivel, these headphones feel "broke in" right out of the box. They have a classy look to them. Excellent work headphones. Top Ten all the way.

Can't Seem To Take Them Off.

By Josh

from Fremont, Ca.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

I just bought a pair a few days ago, and every time I put them on, I just can't seem to take them off. Shortly after I purchased them, I began working on an instrumental piece. I was able to take a much different approach and as I just finished up the piece a few minutes ago, I was able to produce my personal favorite composition of mine yet. Definitely a great investment and quite affordable. I can definitely hear what's going on. I haven't used them for monitoring yet, though I plan to within the next couple days. However even mixing with these headphones was very impressive. Comfortable too. Easily could listen for extended periods without fatigue. They seem quite durable but they also apply for the pro coverage, so I shouldn't have to worry about them not working all of a sudden, which seems to happen to most headphones I get at some point.

Best headphones I own.

By Nicholas Alfano

from Grand Rapids, MI

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

I've owned the ATH-M50S headphones for about 4 months now and they are without a doubt the best headphones I have ever owned. Nice flat response, filling bass and unbelievable depth. I use the M-Audio Fasttrack Pro as my computer interface and have Mackie MR5 monitors and these headphones hooked up to it. I use these for everything from stereo field recordings to directly listening to my acoustic guitars to just plain old listening to music, and the clarity is amazing. I've used them in the loudest venues while recording bands and I can finally hear what my Rode NT5 mics are picking up rather than just the ambient noise overpowering my older headphones. Don't even think twice about it, just get them. You wont be disappointed!

Amazing sound, very comfortable

By Henry Rice

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Monitor Headphones:

I bought these headphones to replace my Audio-Technica ATH-M35's. I had the 35's for about a year, and they were a huge step up from from $20 earbuds. Before I got the 50's, I wasn't sure how big a difference the upgrade from the 35's to the 50's would be. As far as I was concerned the 35's sounded really good. Let me allay and reservations you have about whether or not your getting an appropriate increase in quality for the additional investment in the 50's. First off, the sound quality is noticeably clearer, and sounds feel more natural, like they're coming from speakers in a big room, rather than small speakers right next to your ears. Secondly, the 50's are much more comfortable than the 35's. The 35's sat on my ears, rather than around them, which would lead to my ears hurting after a few hours of continuous use. With the 50's, the cups fit around my ears, which is a massive improvement. All in all, these are great headphones, and are definitely worth the investment.
