I've owned this particular set of headphones for over a year now. I bought these with the expectation of being able to construct quality mixes that would compare closely to near-field monitors. At the time of purchase I was working with a less than desirable set of near-fields due to my budget, and needed something of much better sound quality. With the price of a decent set of monitors being way out of my range, I opted for a nice, professional set of phones to get by. After owning a pair of M30's for a few years and being pleased with the sound quality and isolation, I figured I'd give the M50's a shot. The price to me seemed a bit steep, and probably does to some others, but I have to say... these are the phones to get! Hands-down! Completely blew the M30's out of the water! They are extremely accurate, clean, crisp, and have very nice bass response. I never thought it was possible to mix so well on headphones. You're going to hear so much more in your mixes that it's almost ridiculous. The cups are nice, big and super comfortable, though they do tend to get a bit heavy after several hours. The ONLY problem I've had with this pair was because of my earrings. I had 7/8" plugs when I bought them and they didn't quite fit comfortably, so I had to sacrifice them (Small price to pay for an accurate mix). The isolation is amazing! They almost completely silence the drum kit while tracking. After using them for close to a year to monitor all my mixes I was finally able to buy a pair of KRK near-field monitors, and I have to say, these phones were pretty much on key. I find they do tend to color your mix slightly, so don't over EQ. But once you get accustomed to the way it reproduces the sound, your mixes will sound AMAZING! Bottom line... Buy these headphones! PEACE!

I've owned plenty of A-T gear; these cans are my least favorite. Not particularly comfortable (they clamp my ears), and they just sound clogged and dull to me. The coiled cord is also a headache. My Sony 7506's sound much better, even though the build quality of the Sony's is not nearly as nice. I basically have set the M50's aside and will probably unload them. My studio phones are A-T ATH-A900 studio monitors. The A900's look, sound, and feel great!!! A different world from the ATH-M50's. So, check those out, or forget about clunky cans and get Atrios in-ear monitors instead.

You will not find better cans for the money..or at all for that matter

By Lou Verrone

from Atlanta

I have owned several headphones and I am amazed with these cans. Sound reproduction is as clean, clear and as crisp as it gets. They are comfortable and can be worn for hours on end. They are sturdy, light and well padded. Personally, I am not a fan of coiled cables so I own the ATH-M50S with the straight cord. Whether you mix, record, or just want to listen to great recordings, these cans will deliver an accurate range of frequency from top to bottom. All I can say is that after 20 years, these are my favorite headphones and you can't beat the price. I was fortunate enough to get these on sale for under $100, but would pay more as they rival anything else on the market. So why pay 2 to 3x more for others when these when you can have the best for under $150? I will be buying another pair for traveling.

That bass!

By Logan Jungbacker

from Midwest

These are amazing, first thing i noticed when listening was the bass response, full and accurate. comfortable and i have only had for a week but they feel very durable. the have protective covering by the 1/8 ", 1/4" in jack which is where every other cord i ever owned has broken (hyperbole but you get the point, they got it right with these). buy these and wear them for years. i also have a had a pair a sennhieser hd 280's which i upgraded from, and these blow the bass on those out of the water. after referencing both - the sennhiesers produce noticeably less bass response and the ATHM50's.

Great Headphones

By robert voris

from Ashland, Oregon

These AT headphones have very wide frequency response, are comfortable to wear for long periods of time and come with either a straight or coiled cable. I have one of each. They are very efficient offering considerably more output for a given input which is a plus when used as monitors with consoles that have weak headphone amps. I find they have a much richer sound than Sony V6s and smoother response than just about any other cans I've tried. They are ever so slightly hot from 600Hz to 1kHz, about 2db. Other than that the M50s are very flat. They are very well made with a sturdy cable and come stock with mini plug to 1/4" adaptor. At the price they are unbeatable.

I had a lower level set of their headphones that finally died after about 18 years, so I anticipated good quality. What I got was GREAT quality with a very accurate dynamic range and very comfortable fit.

      Accurate Audio

      By ROBERT VORIS

      from Ashland, Oregon

I mix recorded and live audio for a living and having spent several hours under the Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones I'm very satisfied with the purchase. These "cans" reproduce audio very accurately. If you are looking for headphones to mix tracks you will get very good results using the M50s. They don't color the sound and have very wide frequency response. I've been using Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 Studio Headphones as reference cans for years. They are good, very good, but the AT M50s are better and equally comfortable to wear over extended periods of time. Great mixes don't happen in five minutes so you need headphones you can wear for hours without feeling pain around your ears. The M50s are very comfortable and give a great deal of isolation. AT strikes again with another stellar product. Your only decision is coiled cord or straight. That's up to you.

I bought these because of the Audio Technica brand name. Little did I know the poor quality synthetic material used on these cans disintegrated in less than 6-Mos., rendering them unusable. Sound wise, the most I could say is that their sound quality was mediocre and certainly not up to par. In addition they are heavy and cumbersome. I own or have owned various professional brand headphones (mainly AKG's & Senheisser's) and, in my opinion, these have been the worst. I believe they do not withstand tropical or high ozone sunny weather conditions.

      Outstanding Headphones

      By Evan Kahler

      from Fort Collins, CO

I own about 8 pairs of headphones right now and easily over 50 throughout my career. For over-the-ear headphones, these are the best quality/price ratio pair that I have ever used. I don't see why anyone would need better headphones for recording and mixing. Isolates outside sound well but comfortable for 2-3 hours of use before a coffee and twinkie break (sigh, no more twinkies). Balanced, clear and warm sound. I have the coiled cord style...perfect for work on mixes at the PC, keyboard, and guitar. If you stand with a band when you record, you probably want the uncoiled cord version.

Read a LOT of positive comments on numerous websites regarding these headphones. Took a chance without actually using a set and ordered them for a very good price from Musicians Friend. The phones are very comfy and I don't think anyone would have a problem wearing them for an extended period of time. They also work pretty well at reducing extraneous noise. The BEST thing about these phones is the sound quality ... smooth and warm, very balanced across the spectrum and I believe a very true, flat response. And as they continue to be "burned in" I am noticing the sound quality just getting better and better. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
